Colonoscopy in Ukraine

Colonoscopy is an endoscopic examination of the large intestine with a thin, flexible instrument fitted with optics and a camera, which sends images of the lining to a monitor in real time. It is ordered for persistent abdominal pain, bloating, changes in the frequency or nature of bowel movements, blood in the stool or unexplained anaemia, and when polyps, colitis, Crohn's disease or a bowel tumour are suspected. During the examination the doctor can take a biopsy, remove a small growth or stop bleeding, without open surgery. The procedure is performed as an outpatient, under local anaesthesia or sedation, so you go home the same day. MediUkraine helps you arrange the examination with an experienced endoscopist at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, agree a time and get a cost estimate with no hidden charges.

Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.

What colonoscopy is

A flexible scope is inserted through the rectum and gradually advanced through all sections of the large intestine, up to the caecum. To unfold the folds of the lining and miss nothing, gas is introduced into the bowel, so you feel a sense of fullness in the abdomen during the examination. The doctor assesses the colour and surface of the lining, the pattern of blood vessels, and whether there are erosions, polyps, narrowings or areas of inflammation.

The main advantage of the method is that it gives a great deal of information with minimal intervention. Video endoscopes give a detailed real-time image of the lining, so even minor changes become visible; if needed, the doctor takes a biopsy straight away or carries out treatment, removing polyps or stopping bleeding. Thanks to local anaesthesia or sedation the examination is comfortable and painless, and you feel back to normal within a few hours.

Depending on the indications, the examination is performed under local or intravenous anaesthesia. In most cases it is a short outpatient procedure that does not require a hospital stay. The doctor gives individual preparation instructions: usually bowel cleansing and not eating for 6–8 hours.

Colonoscopy is a key method for diagnosing polyposis, colitis, diverticulosis, bowel cancer and chronic inflammatory bowel disease. The changes found and the histology result determine the further course of treatment.

Coming to Uzhhorod for treatment: what to expect

Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.

Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.

Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.

Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.

Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

Who needs a colonoscopy

The examination is ordered for patients with a suspected condition of the large intestine, when symptoms persist despite standard treatment or the diagnosis needs to be clarified.
Reasons include persistent abdominal pain, bloating, changes in the frequency or nature of bowel movements, blood in the stool, suspected polyps or bowel cancer, and unexplained anaemia.
Sometimes the procedure is performed not only for diagnosis but also for treatment: polyps are removed, bowel bleeding is stopped and foreign bodies are retrieved.

Preparing for the procedure

  1. The examination is performed at specialist clinics in Ukraine, and it begins not in the endoscopy room but with a consultation with a gastroenterologist or proctologist.
  2. You must tell the doctor about all the medicines you take, above all anticoagulants, aspirin, blood pressure medicines and vitamin supplements.
  3. The key stage is bowel cleansing.
  4. At the consultation the doctor sets out the schedule for taking the solution, the time of your last meal and the list of medicines to pause, and these details are worth agreeing in advance.

Types of colonoscopy

The method is chosen individually, depending on your condition, the suspected diagnosis and the purpose of the examination. Colonoscopy may be diagnostic — to find the cause of pain, bloating, changes in bowel habits or blood in the stool, or to check for suspected polyps or tumours — or therapeutic, when growths are removed, bleeding is stopped and treatment is carried out on the lining.

Diagnostic colonoscopy shows the lining of the large intestine in detail: even minimal changes, inflammation or erosions become visible. A biopsy, a tissue sample for histological analysis, is taken during it. High-definition video colonoscopes give a clear image with minimal discomfort for you.

Therapeutic colonoscopy is needed when the cause of the symptoms has to be dealt with straight away: removing polyps, stopping bowel bleeding, widening a narrowed section or treating the lining. It can also be part of the comprehensive treatment of inflammatory or post-operative bowel lesions.

Both options are performed under local anaesthesia or sedation; the choice depends on the indications and your preferences. The doctor explains the preparation steps in advance so that the examination goes smoothly.

Advantages of colonoscopy

  • Colonoscopy is a minimally invasive method for diagnosing and treating diseases of the large intestine: the doctor examines the lining in detail and finds polyps, inflammation, erosions or other abnormal changes.
  • The MediUkraine team will arrange the examination at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, where it is performed according to international medical protocols.

Recovery after the examination

After the examination, not only the result matters but also monitoring in the first hours. Mild bloating, a feeling of fullness or slight discomfort is a normal short-term reaction of the bowel to the gas introduced, and it passes on its own.

For the first 24 hours avoid fatty food, alcohol, fizzy drinks and strenuous exercise to give the bowel time to recover. You can eat 2–3 hours after the effect of the local anaesthetic or sedation has fully worn off. After sedation you must not drive or do work that requires concentration for a day.

Most patients return to their usual routine the same day. However, the doctor may prescribe a few days of a special diet, especially if polyps were removed or bleeding was stopped during the examination. During this time it is important to drink enough water, follow the dietary advice and avoid foods that irritate the lining.

Pain, a raised temperature, nausea or blood in the stool after the procedure are reasons to contact the clinic immediately. The MediUkraine team arranges monitoring after the procedure and a consultation with a gastroenterologist to support your recovery.

Colonoscopy and digestive health

Endoscopic examination of the large intestine shows its inner surface in detail: inflammation, erosions, polyps, tumours and other abnormal changes. Diagnostic accuracy is combined with the option of carrying out treatment straight away, which is why the method has become a mainstay of gastroenterology practice.

The procedure is especially important with chronic abdominal pain, bloating, bowel problems, blood in the stool, anaemia or suspected polyps or tumours of the large intestine. The doctor takes a biopsy for histological analysis or removes a growth straight away, so the nature of the changes can be established accurately and treatment started without surgery.

Polyps found at an early stage are removed during the same examination, so it is best not to put it off. The MediUkraine team will arrange the procedure at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, where it is performed to international standards, and support you from booking to receiving the histology results.

Why is colonoscopy more affordable in Ukraine?

When planning an examination of the large intestine, patients often compare costs in different countries. In Ukraine colonoscopy combines quality video endoscopy equipment with a much lower price than at clinics in Europe or Turkey. You also get the full cycle at one medical centre: a consultation with a gastroenterologist, the examination itself and, if needed, treatment procedures.

The reasons for the more affordable price are clear. First, the cost of providing medical services (premises, utilities, consumables) is much lower than in EU countries. Second, strong competition between private clinics leads to transparent package offers with no hidden charges. Third, the outpatient format removes the cost of a long hospital stay.

At the same time, care in Ukraine is reliable: clinics strictly follow European sterility standards, use single-use instruments and monitor the quality of anaesthesia and your condition. The examination is performed by experienced endoscopists with high-precision video colonoscopes, so the risk of complications is low.

The main reasons for the lower cost of colonoscopy in Ukraine:
• lower running costs of clinics and medical centres;
• a transparent billing system with no hidden charges;
• the option of having the examination as an outpatient, without a hospital stay.

Is colonoscopy safe?

Colonoscopy is a routine, well-established examination. Private clinics in Ukraine follow European safety standards: sterility, quality control of anaesthesia and monitoring of your condition. The examination is performed with high-precision video colonoscopes, which give an accurate picture of the lining with minimal discomfort.

When sedation is used, you are under the constant supervision of an anaesthetist during the procedure. Local anaesthesia or sedation makes the examination practically painless. All procedures are carried out in sterile conditions, using single-use instruments and disinfection systems, which is especially important for patients with other chronic illnesses.

When choosing a clinic, consider the endoscopists' experience and qualifications, the equipment, genuine patient reviews and transparent prices. MediUkraine puts you in touch with an endoscopist at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, so you can have the examination with peace of mind and no surprises on the bill.
