Pre-pregnancy Check-up in Ukraine

A pre-pregnancy check-up is a set of laboratory tests and imaging that assess the reproductive system before conception. The programme covers the hormone profile, tests for TORCH infections, cervical cytology and a pelvic ultrasound. From the results the doctor can see whether there are ovulation problems, hidden infections or inflammation, and what should be corrected in advance. The check-up is recommended 3–6 months before the planned conception; the basic programme starts from USD 132.

Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.

About the pre-pregnancy check-up

The pre-pregnancy check-up consists of three parts: hormonal, infectious and imaging. Tests for FSH, LH, prolactin and progesterone show whether ovulation is taking place and what the ovarian reserve is; tests for TORCH infections, HIV and hepatitis detect infections that affect the course of pregnancy; a pelvic ultrasound and cervical cytology describe the state of the uterus, ovaries and lining. Together these data show the doctor what should be corrected before conception, from thyroid problems to inflammation. Women without symptoms also have a pre-pregnancy check-up, because some disorders cause no symptoms for a long time. It is best to start a few months before the planned conception, to leave time for treatment and repeat tests.

Coming to Uzhhorod for treatment: what to expect

Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.

Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.

Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.

Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.

Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

Indications for a pre-pregnancy check-up

A pre-pregnancy check-up is indicated above all when there are signs that could prevent conception or complicate pregnancy.
It is usually recommended for women with an irregular cycle, painful periods, suspected hormonal disorders, lower abdominal pain or discomfort during sex.

How to prepare for the check-up

  1. If you take oral contraceptives, discuss with your doctor whether to stop them 2–3 months before the check-up: this gives your body time to restore its natural hormonal cycle and makes the test results more reliable.
  2. Gather your medical records: gynaecologist's reports, recent blood test and ultrasound results, and a list of past illnesses and operations.
  3. On the day before the check-up, eat as usual but limit foods that cause bloating.

Which tests are included in the programme

A comprehensive reproductive health assessment covers factors that may affect conception and the course of pregnancy. The logic is as follows: first the hormonal status is assessed, then the infection profile, and finally the structure of the reproductive organs is examined with ultrasound and laboratory tests.

The laboratory part includes levels of FSH, LH, prolactin and progesterone to assess ovarian function, blood tests for infection markers (rubella, toxoplasmosis, cytomegalovirus), tests for sexually transmitted infections and antiphospholipid antibodies. These markers reveal ovulation problems, chronic infections and clotting disorders at an early stage.

The imaging part is a transvaginal ultrasound to assess the anatomy of the uterus and ovaries and the number and quality of follicles. When indicated, hysterosalpingography (HSG) is ordered to check whether the fallopian tubes are open. MediUkraine arranges the necessary tests at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod and coordinates a consultation with a fertility specialist to discuss the results.

Benefits of a comprehensive pre-pregnancy check-up

  • A pre-pregnancy check-up is a way to prepare your body for conception and spot weak points in your reproductive health in time.

What happens after the check-up

Once the programme is complete, the stage of following the recommendations and keeping an eye on how you feel begins. You receive your test results and personal advice on preparing for conception, adjusting your lifestyle and diet, and preventing possible risks. Within a few days you have a better understanding of your health, because instead of guesswork you have a clear plan.

In the first weeks, follow the specialist's instructions: have additional tests or scans on time, and avoid excessive physical exertion and severe stress if the doctor stresses this. If the check-up revealed changes, the doctor draws up an individual programme of preparation for pregnancy and then monitors your progress.

Slight discomfort after certain procedures, such as taking smears or examining the cervix, goes away on its own. During this period, watch for unusual sensations, such as pain, unusual discharge or changes in your cycle, and tell the doctor straight away. The next step after receiving the results is a follow-up visit to the gynaecologist at the scheduled time and repeat tests for the markers the doctor decided to correct.

Pre-pregnancy check-up and protecting reproductive health

A pre-pregnancy check-up is a comprehensive medical examination that assesses reproductive health and identifies potential risks before conception. It includes laboratory tests, ultrasound and specialist consultations to prepare your body for pregnancy.

The check-up includes blood tests for infections (TORCH, HIV, hepatitis B and C), a hormone profile (TSH, oestrogen, progesterone), a full blood count and biochemistry. Cervical cytology and a pelvic ultrasound to detect abnormalities of the uterus, fallopian tubes and ovaries are essential. Genetic markers, blood group and Rh factor are checked separately.

MediUkraine organises the comprehensive check-up at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, taking care of coordination and explaining the results.

Why is a pre-pregnancy check-up in Ukraine affordable and good value?

A pre-pregnancy check-up in Ukraine costs noticeably less than at European and North American clinics. The price difference is explained by the lower cost of medical services, while international quality standards are maintained. Ukrainian diagnostic centres have modern equipment for ultrasound, hormone tests and reproductive health assessment, but staff and material costs remain noticeably lower than in Western countries.

Specialist reproductive medicine clinics in Ukraine offer a comprehensive check-up, from consultations with a fertility specialist and gynaecologist to molecular genetic tests and semen analysis (for patients with partners), for 30–50% less than abroad. The doctors follow European protocols.

MediUkraine makes planning the check-up simpler: we arrange it at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod and coordinate every stage. This makes good preparation for pregnancy more affordable without compromising the standard of care.

Is the pre-pregnancy check-up safe?

Yes, it follows international medical protocols. The pre-pregnancy check-up takes place at a clinic with modern equipment: diagnosis is accurate, procedures are sterile and minimally invasive. Your data remain confidential, and a doctor supports you throughout the check-up.

The programme is carried out by experienced gynaecologists and fertility specialists who consider each case individually, taking into account test results, hormone levels, medical history and reproductive plans. A personalised approach gives an accurate assessment of women's health, detects possible problems and determines how to prepare for pregnancy.

The clinic follows international standards for gynaecological examinations. The doctor guides you from taking your medical history to receiving the results and giving recommendations. At the end you have a written report, a list of prescriptions and the date of your next visit.

Frequently asked questions

What is a pre-pregnancy check-up?

It is a comprehensive examination that assesses reproductive health and hormone levels, rules out infections and prepares a woman's body for conception.

How much does a pre-pregnancy check-up cost in Ukraine?

The cost depends on the scope of tests and examinations. The comprehensive programme, with a gynaecologist consultation, hormone tests, infection tests, an ultrasound and cytology, costs from USD 132.

When should you see a doctor for a check-up?

Ideally 3–6 months before the planned pregnancy, so there is enough time to correct any abnormalities.

How do I prepare for a pre-pregnancy check-up?

Prepare information about your cycle, previous tests and chronic conditions, avoid sex for 1–2 days before smears are taken, and come for the examination when you are not having your period.

Can I have a pre-pregnancy check-up if I have other conditions?

Yes, in most cases. The doctor adapts the examination programme to your health and orders the necessary tests.

What are the indications for a pre-pregnancy check-up?

An irregular cycle, lower abdominal pain, suspected hormonal disorders, planning conception after the age of 30, a history of gynaecological conditions or repeated unsuccessful attempts to conceive.

Can I skip the examination if I have no symptoms?

No symptoms does not mean no problems: that is why the examination is recommended for women without complaints too. Infections, hormonal imbalances, vitamin and mineral deficiencies and inflammation of the reproductive system can remain hidden for a long time but still affect conception and the course of pregnancy. When found during preparation, they can usually be treated; the result depends on the type and severity of the problem.

Some congenital or chromosomal features cannot be removed, but modern medicine has tools to manage them and improve the chances of a successful pregnancy. The value of a pre-pregnancy check-up lies precisely in seeing risks in advance. MediUkraine will help you find qualified doctors who will analyse your results in detail and suggest a treatment plan before conception.
