Vascular Ultrasound (Doppler) in Ukraine

Vascular Doppler ultrasound is a scan of the arteries and veins that shows the speed and direction of blood flow, the condition of the vessel wall and the presence of blood clots and atherosclerotic plaques. It is ordered for varicose veins, swelling and heaviness in the legs, headaches and dizziness, and to monitor the vessels after surgery or treatment. The scan is painless, involves no needles and no ionising radiation. Depending on the area, the procedure takes 20–40 minutes, and you receive the report straight after the examination. MediUkraine books the scan at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, agrees the date and, if needed, arranges a consultation with a vascular specialist or phlebologist.

Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.

What vascular Doppler ultrasound is

Vascular Doppler ultrasound is based on the Doppler effect: the frequency of a reflected wave changes when it meets moving red blood cells. The machine converts this difference into flow velocity, so the doctor sees not only the outline of the vessel in B-mode but also how the blood moves inside it, whether the flow is even or turbulent over a narrowed section. This is how stenosis and circulation problems are detected.

The scan is painless and free of complications and needs no contrast agent. The doctor measures the speed of blood flow and detects atherosclerotic plaques, blood clots, aneurysms and other vascular conditions. The result is ready straight away, so treatment can start without delay.

The scan is indicated for suspected varicose veins, peripheral arterial disease of the legs, chronic venous insufficiency, cerebrovascular disorders and for monitoring after vascular surgery.

MediUkraine books the scan with experienced specialists at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod and supports you at every stage of diagnosis.

Coming to Uzhhorod for treatment: what to expect

Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.

Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.

Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.

Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.

Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

Indications for vascular ultrasound (Doppler)

Vascular ultrasound (Doppler) is ordered when the doctor needs to check whether arteries and veins are open, find atherosclerotic plaques or understand the cause of impaired circulation.
Diagnostics in Ukraine win on accessibility and price.
MediUkraine helps with the arrangements: an online consultation, booking at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod and scheduling the procedure.

How to prepare for a vascular Doppler scan

  1. A vascular Doppler scan involves no needles or injections: the doctor applies a special gel to the skin and moves an ultrasound probe over the area to be examined.
  2. Do not stop blood-thinning medicines (such as aspirin or warfarin) before the scan: any change to them is made only as agreed with the doctor who prescribed them.
  3. There are no strict restrictions immediately before the scan.
  4. MediUkraine will book you in with a qualified sonographer at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod.

Types of vascular Doppler ultrasound

Duplex scanning is the basic method, combining B-mode ultrasound with Doppler measurement. The doctor sees the anatomy of the vessel and measures the blood flow in it at the same time, so plaques, stenoses, aneurysms and thrombosis can be found in both arteries and veins. No contrast agent is needed, so the scan can be repeated as often as necessary.

Colour Doppler builds on the standard method: the software colours the direction and speed of flow in different colours. Abnormal flow is visible immediately, and the doctor assesses circulation in real time. This mode is mostly used for the vessels of the legs and arms and the carotid arteries.

Spectral Doppler gives precise figures: linear and volume flow velocity and resistance indices. These are used to assess the severity of stenosis and predict the risk of complications. MediUkraine will tell you which modes are available at the partner clinic for a comprehensive vascular assessment.

Benefits of vascular ultrasound

  • Vascular diagnostics with Doppler in Ukraine use probes with a frequency of 7 to 15 MHz, which gives enough resolution for large arteries and veins as well as small peripheral vessels.
  • MediUkraine books the Doppler scan at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, where a vascular surgeon or phlebologist can also see you.
  • A comprehensive vascular ultrasound includes real-time assessment of blood flow, measurement of the intima-media thickness of the arteries, and detection of stenoses and occlusions.

What to do after a vascular Doppler scan

No recovery is needed after a vascular ultrasound: it is a diagnostic, not a treatment procedure, and you go home straight after the scan. It is different if the scan reveals a vascular problem: then the treating doctor's instructions on medication and prevention come first.

Once you have the results, the treatment plan is agreed with a phlebologist or vascular specialist. For some patients conservative treatment is enough, with venotonic medicines, antiplatelet agents or anticoagulants, depending on the diagnosis. If significant arterial stenoses or aneurysms are found, endovascular or open surgery may be needed, and recovery from it will take longer.

MediUkraine will find a specialist who will read the Doppler report and draw up an individual treatment plan. The service makes it easier to arrange follow-up visits and not miss the dates for repeat vascular scans.

How blood flow is assessed during the scan

Doppler ultrasound shows not a static picture but the movement of blood: the probe picks up waves reflected from red blood cells and converts them into flow velocity. Together with the standard ultrasound image, this gives a full picture: whether the vessel is open, stenoses, atherosclerotic plaques, thrombosis and the condition of the vessel wall.

The procedure is outpatient and needs no special preparation. You lie or sit comfortably, the specialist applies gel to the skin and places the probe on the area to be examined. The scan takes 20–40 minutes, depending on the scope and the number of vessels to be examined.

Through MediUkraine you can book a vascular ultrasound with experienced specialists at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod.

Why is vascular ultrasound (Doppler) cheaper in Ukraine?

Vascular ultrasound (Doppler) is a non-invasive scan that assesses blood flow in arteries and veins, narrowing of vessels, atherosclerotic plaques and circulation problems. Unlike invasive angiography, the procedure does not require a hospital stay and has virtually no contraindications.

In Europe and the USA a similar scan costs EUR or USD 300–600, while in Ukraine it costs considerably less (see the table above), depending on the scope of the scan and the specialist's qualifications. This price gap is explained by differences in clinics' running costs, medical staff pay and the health insurance system.

MediUkraine connects patients with experienced sonographers at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, which charges a fair price for this scan.

Is vascular Doppler ultrasound safe?

Vascular ultrasound (Doppler) uses ultrasound waves without ionising radiation and requires no skin punctures. The scan assesses circulation in the arteries and veins and finds atherosclerotic plaques, blood clots and blood flow problems, all without strain on the body.

The equipment at the partner clinic of MediUkraine undergoes regular metrological checks. The clinic maintains hygienic conditions, uses single-use consumables and follows disinfection protocols.

The safety of the procedure is supported by the requirements of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the relevant regulations that clinics follow. When you book through MediUkraine, you see information about the clinic's licence, the diagnostic equipment available and the specialists' qualifications, which is what is worth checking before you book.

Frequently asked questions

What is vascular ultrasound (Doppler)?

Vascular ultrasound, or Doppler ultrasound, is a non-invasive scan that assesses the arteries and veins, the speed of blood flow and any problems such as blood clots, narrowing or atherosclerotic plaques. The procedure is painless and safe, so it is suitable even for children and older people.

How much does a vascular ultrasound cost in Ukraine?

The cost of a vascular ultrasound in Ukraine depends on the type of scan (arteries, veins, head and neck vessels) and the clinic's equipment. Indicative prices in USD are shown in the table on this page.

Do I need a visa to have a scan in Ukraine?

Entry requirements depend on your citizenship, so check the current rules for entering Ukraine before you travel. You can book the scan in advance, choosing a convenient date.

How do I know whether a vascular Doppler scan is right for me?

A vascular ultrasound is recommended for headaches, dizziness, ringing in the ears, swelling, heaviness in the legs, cold hands or feet, changes in skin colour or the appearance of spider veins. It is also done as a preventive check for people with high blood pressure, diabetes, excess weight or a family tendency to varicose veins.

What types of vascular Doppler ultrasound are there?
  • Doppler ultrasound: the basic method of assessing blood flow in large vessels.

  • Duplex scanning: combines Doppler with imaging of the vessel and shows the structure of the vessel wall.

  • Triplex scanning: an extended version that shows the direction and speed of blood flow in colour.

How long does a vascular ultrasound take?

Depending on the area examined, a Doppler scan takes from 20 to 40 minutes. Straight after it, you receive the doctor's report and can return to your usual activities.

Can Doppler ultrasound prevent vascular disease?

Doppler ultrasound is a diagnostic procedure, not a treatment, so it does not cure the disease itself. But a stenosis, plaque, thrombosis or venous insufficiency found in time is a chance to start treatment early and avoid serious complications such as stroke, heart attack or amputation. In this sense the scan works for prevention.

How far the vessels can be restored depends on the nature of the disease, its stage and the treatment chosen. With minor changes, conservative treatment and lifestyle changes are often enough; complex cases need open or endovascular surgery. MediUkraine helps you book a qualified phlebologist or vascular surgeon at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, who will read the Doppler results and draw up an individual treatment plan.
