Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.
An intrauterine device is a small device that a gynaecologist places in the uterus and that works continuously for years until you decide to have it removed. The choice starts not with a model but with an examination: the doctor assesses your reproductive system, rules out contraindications such as pregnancy or inflammation, and only then decides what suits you better, a copper IUD or a hormonal IUD. This decision is always individual and based on the examination results, not on general recommendations.
The second part is follow-up. The visit is not limited to the procedure itself: it includes a consultation, an examination, an ultrasound scan if needed and later check-ups. Everything is done on an outpatient basis, so no hospital stay or long recovery is needed. The advice the doctor gives after insertion is mainly about self-checks, which help you notice displacement of the device or complications in time.
Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.
Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.
Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.
Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.
Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

IUD insertion is done during a gynaecological examination, usually on an outpatient basis. The doctor inserts the contraceptive through the cervical canal into the uterus; the whole procedure takes 5–15 minutes. There are two types of device: non-hormonal IUDs (copper and gold-copper) and hormonal IUDs. Non-hormonal IUDs cause a local reaction in the uterus: copper ions are toxic to sperm and prevent fertilisation. Hormonal systems gradually release a progestogen, which thickens the cervical mucus and thins the lining of the uterus.
IUD removal is carried out at the end of its lifespan, from 3 to 10 years depending on the type, or if complications arise. This is also an outpatient appointment: the gynaecologist grasps the threads with forceps and pulls the device out of the uterus. Removal is easier than insertion, and if you wish, a new IUD can be fitted straight away.
MediUkraine will arrange the procedure at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, where it is carried out in line with all hygiene standards. Before the visit you can get advice on the type of device and the features of each contraceptive method.
The doctor's work does not end with the procedure: medical follow-up comes next. After insertion you receive individual advice on lifestyle, what to expect and the adaptation period. Mild discomfort is possible in the first days and usually passes quickly. Following this advice helps keep the device in the right position and working as it should.
Next come scheduled check-ups, at which the doctor checks the position of the IUD and that there are no complications. If the device was removed, the gynaecologist assesses your reproductive system and advises on how to continue contraception or plan a pregnancy. In most cases recovery is quick and without long restrictions.
After the procedure, pay close attention to how you feel and do not put off a visit if something worries you. The doctor explains straight after the procedure which changes need an unscheduled check-up; it is best to write this advice down or save it on your phone.
IUD insertion is the placement of a contraceptive device in the uterus by a gynaecologist. The appointment takes 5–10 minutes and is done on an outpatient basis, without anaesthesia. The doctor examines you, determines the position of the uterus, widens the cervical canal with a special instrument and carefully inserts the device to the right depth. You then receive instructions on how to check the IUD threads yourself and which symptoms mean you should see a doctor immediately.
Medication beforehand is usually not needed, although some clinics advise taking an antispasmodic 30 minutes before the appointment to reduce discomfort. The most convenient time for insertion is the first days of the menstrual cycle, when the cervical canal is slightly wider. Mild cramps in the lower abdomen after the procedure are a normal reaction and pass within a few hours.
MediUkraine will arrange an appointment with an experienced gynaecologist at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod on terms that suit you.
IUD insertion and removal cost considerably less in Ukraine than at European and North American clinics. In the USA and the UK the same service can cost USD 800–2,000. The difference is explained by running costs, medical staff salaries and the way health insurance systems are organised.
Ukrainian gynaecology clinics follow standards of asepsis and safety protocols, so a lower price does not mean a simplified approach to your care.
MediUkraine organises the visit for international patients: direct access to the partner clinic, coordination of appointments and the necessary consultations. This removes intermediary costs, and the cost breakdown stays transparent, with no hidden charges.
IUD insertion and removal are routine low-risk procedures, although, like any medical intervention, they can occasionally cause complications, which the doctor will explain beforehand. They are performed by gynaecologists who rely on diagnostics and monitoring: this makes it possible to assess your reproductive system accurately and reduce risks. In most cases the appointment is outpatient, in comfortable conditions and without significant discomfort.
You are supported at every stage, from the first consultation and choice of device to follow-up after the procedure. Accuracy depends on the clinic's equipment and the doctor's qualifications, and follow-up check-ups show whether the IUD is correctly positioned and how your body is recovering after removal.

📍 Uzhhorod, Ukraine
A multidisciplinary hospital in Uzhhorod, part of a network of medical facilities in western Ukraine: an outpatient clinic, a surgical centre covering 15 specialties and a 30-bed inpatient unit. Its 52 doctors include professors and PhDs; many operations are done as day surgery, with discharge after 1–2 days.
It is the placement of a contraceptive device in the uterus for long-term protection against pregnancy. A gynaecologist performs the procedure on an outpatient basis, and it takes a few minutes.
Usually from USD 38. The final amount depends on the type of IUD, the clinic and the tests needed before the procedure.
Citizens of many countries enter Ukraine visa-free or under a simplified procedure. Check the current rules just before you travel.
An IUD suits women who need reliable protection for several years. The gynaecologist makes the final decision after a consultation and examination.
The doctor uses gynaecological instruments, often under ultrasound guidance, to position the IUD accurately and remove it carefully.
The procedure itself takes 10–30 minutes. Recovery usually takes 1–2 days.
An IUD does not reduce your ability to become pregnant later. After removal, fertility returns and you can become pregnant. It is a contraceptive, not a treatment, although a hormonal IUD is sometimes prescribed for therapeutic reasons, for example for heavy menstrual bleeding. In that case the original symptoms may return after the device is removed.
Whether to remove the IUD or keep it depends on your needs, health and pregnancy plans. The MediUkraine team will help you understand the indications and contraindications and arrange an appointment at the partner clinic. The gynaecologist will examine you, discuss alternative methods of contraception and give personalised advice based on your health and life plans.
