Plasmapheresis (Blood Purification) in Ukraine

Plasmapheresis is an extracorporeal blood treatment: part of the plasma containing harmful components is removed, and the blood cells are returned to the patient together with a replacement solution. It is used for autoimmune diseases, hyperlipidaemia, poisoning and other conditions in which harmful substances build up in the blood. A session lasts an hour or longer, and a course usually consists of 3–10 procedures with a break of 2–3 days between them. The doctor decides on the indications and the number of sessions based on a blood test and a coagulation profile.

Cost of plasmapheresis (blood purification) in Ukraine

Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.

What is plasmapheresis (blood purification)?

The procedure does not target the blood as a whole but specific molecules circulating in the plasma: autoantibodies, immune complexes, paraproteins and pro-inflammatory mediators. The machine separates the blood into cellular components and plasma, removes the harmful elements and returns the cleaned blood to the patient, while the loss of valuable proteins and blood cells remains small. It is used for autoimmune diseases, haemolytic anaemia and emergency clinical situations.

A session lasts 60–90 minutes, depending on the volume of plasma processed. It is carried out by a doctor who specialises in apheresis, following aseptic rules, with anticoagulation adjusted to the individual patient's clotting results.

The method is used for patients with systemic lupus erythematosus, vasculitis, myasthenia gravis and severe forms of skin diseases. The first changes are often noticeable within a few days: symptoms ease, and wellbeing and laboratory results improve.

Through MediUkraine you can book a haematologist consultation at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, where the doctor will advise where and how to have the procedure.

Coming to Uzhhorod for treatment: what to expect

Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.

Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.

Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.

Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.

Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

Where the procedure is performed and how the course is organised

The cost of a course in Ukraine is noticeably lower than in many other countries.
The method is used to treat autoimmune diseases, vascular disorders and toxic conditions.
Another practical point is the short waiting time for the procedure and the option to combine it with a full set of tests and follow-up rehabilitation.

Preparing for the procedure

  1. Preparation for plasmapheresis begins with a consultation with a haematologist or another relevant specialist, who will determine the indications and assess your general health.
  2. For 2–3 days before the session, keep to your usual diet and continue taking your prescribed medicines.
  3. The MediUkraine medical platform will arrange a haematologist consultation at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod and coordinate everything from booking an appointment to completing the course.

Methods: centrifugation and membrane filtration

Plasma containing pathogenic components, immune complexes and toxic substances is separated from the cells in two different ways, and the method determines how much can be removed in a session and how well the patient tolerates the procedure. MediUkraine helps find a clinic where the method is used according to protocols for autoimmune, allergic and toxic conditions.

Centrifugation is widely used. The blood is placed in a centrifuge, where the plasma is separated from the cellular elements. This makes it possible to remove a large volume of plasma in one procedure; the method is effective for hyperlipidaemia, cryoglobulinaemia and severe forms of vasculitis. However, it requires specialised equipment and highly qualified medical staff.

Membrane plasmapheresis uses filters that hold back molecules of a certain size. This approach is gentler on blood cells, is easier for patients to tolerate and is suitable for outpatient settings. Membrane technology is chosen for chronic autoimmune diseases when repeated courses of sessions are needed.

MediUkraine advises patients on the choice of method depending on the diagnosis, state of health and the clinic's capabilities.

Clinic equipment and benefits for the patient

  • The procedure is performed using automatic plasma separators.
  • Treatment in Ukraine usually costs less than in the European Union and the USA.
  • Procedures are carried out in line with biosafety and sanitary control rules.

Recovery after a session

Recovery begins as soon as the procedure is over. In the first few hours you may feel slightly tired or a little dizzy as a result of a temporary drop in blood volume. You stay at the clinic for 30-60 minutes for observation while your blood pressure gradually returns to normal. Medical staff monitor your circulation and, if needed, give an intravenous infusion to restore circulating blood volume.

For the next 3-5 days, eat regular, balanced meals and drink more water. Avoid heavy physical exertion, sudden temperature changes and stressful situations. If the course includes several sessions, the interval between them is 2-3 days, which gives the body time to replenish its own plasma.

The MediUkraine team will help find a clinic for your sessions with a clear follow-up plan. Our specialists will explain how to follow the treatment regime and coordinate all stages of treatment.

How a session goes: stages and volumes

After the plasma has been separated, the cellular elements are returned to the patient together with a replacement fluid: donor plasma, saline or albumin. The replacement maintains circulating blood volume during the session.

Technically, the process has two stages: first, whole blood passes through a separator, where centrifugation or membrane filtration takes place; then the cleaned cells are returned to the body together with the replacement fluid. One session usually lasts 1.5–2 hours, during which 600–1200 ml of plasma is removed. The doctor decides on the number of procedures individually, depending on the diagnosis and the patient's clinical condition.

Through the MediUkraine portal you can book a consultation at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, where the doctor will determine the indications and the method.

Why plasmapheresis (blood purification) is more affordable in Ukraine

Plasmapheresis is used to treat autoimmune diseases, hyperlipidaemia and blood hyperviscosity syndromes. In Ukraine the procedure usually costs less than in Europe, and the difference is not related to the class of equipment or the qualifications of the staff.

Running costs and specialists' salaries in Ukraine are significantly lower than at European medical facilities, and this, rather than a simplified protocol, is what keeps the price down.

The MediUkraine platform arranges a haematologist consultation at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, from USD 20: the doctor will assess your condition and advise where and how to continue treatment. The doctor draws up the cost estimate after the examination, and MediUkraine helps you get it before you travel, with no hidden charges.

Safety of the procedure and quality control

Before the session, you have tests and a consultation with a specialist, and this is when contraindications are ruled out. The machine then separates the blood into cellular components and plasma: the plasma containing abnormal immunoglobulins, lipids and other harmful substances is removed, and the red and white blood cells are returned to your bloodstream.

Apheresis equipment is regularly serviced, and staff performing the procedure are trained in current protocols, which reduces the risk of complications.

The clinic works in line with the requirements of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and the hygiene standards set by law. MediUkraine shows you the terms of the partner clinic in Uzhhorod and the consultation price before you book.

Frequently asked questions

What is plasmapheresis (blood purification)?

Plasmapheresis is a procedure in which the blood is separated into cells and plasma. Part of the plasma containing toxins and immune complexes is removed or filtered, and the cells are returned to the bloodstream together with a replacement solution.

How much does plasmapheresis cost in Ukraine?

The first step is a haematologist consultation at the partner clinic, from USD 20. The cost of a course depends on the number of sessions, your condition and the range of tests, so the doctor gives the plan and cost estimate after the examination.

Is preparation needed before plasmapheresis?

Yes. First comes a consultation with a doctor and tests: a full blood count, a coagulation profile and blood biochemistry. This makes it possible to determine the indications, assess your condition and carry out the course of blood purification safely.

Is plasmapheresis right for me?

The method is considered for autoimmune diseases, poisoning, allergies and other conditions associated with the build-up of harmful substances in the blood. The doctor makes the final decision after diagnosis.

What tests might I need before the procedure?

The basic set is a full blood count, a coagulation profile and blood biochemistry; additional tests are ordered depending on the indications.

How long do the procedure and follow-up take?

One session lasts about 30–90 minutes, and a course consists of several procedures. Follow-up may continue throughout the treatment period, with regular monitoring of your condition.

Can plasmapheresis cure a disease completely?

It depends on the nature of the underlying disease. For some conditions plasmapheresis is a key part of treatment: for example, in certain forms of hyperlipidaemia or hyperimmunoglobulinaemia, regular sessions can help achieve stable control, but the harmful substances may build up again, so courses are often repeated.

In most autoimmune and systemic diseases, however, the procedure is one component of comprehensive treatment rather than a stand-alone method. In rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus or inflammation of the blood vessels, it reduces the severity of symptoms and helps clinical signs regress, but it needs to be combined with the main long-term treatment. The result depends on the stage of the disease, the general state of the immune system and following the prescribed treatment plan. MediUkraine helps you reach specialists at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, who will assess your case and the outlook for treatment.
