| Conventional tonsillectomy | from USD 426 | from USD 2,800 | from USD 2,500 |
Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.
The palatine tonsils are part of the lymphoid ring of the throat: normally they trap microbes at the entrance to the airway. With chronic inflammation their tissue itself becomes a reservoir of bacteria, and instead of protection the body gets a constant focus of infection, with a sore throat, recurring temperature, difficulty swallowing and repeated tonsillitis. This is when an ENT surgeon considers surgery.
There are several ways to operate: conventionally with surgical instruments, with a laser or with radiofrequency. The choice depends on the extent of tissue damage, your age and the clinical picture, and is based on the test results. Minimally invasive techniques reduce blood loss, the risk of infection and tissue swelling, so most patients return to their usual routine within a few days.
During the procedure the doctor removes the affected tissue without injuring healthy areas; anaesthesia is local or general. The operation relieves a constant sore throat, bad breath, swallowing problems and increased tiredness, and the hospital stay is reduced to one day.
Chronic tonsillitis occurs in both children and adults, and without treatment it can lead to rheumatic disease, nephritis or heart damage. That is why after 4–5 episodes of tonsillitis a year it makes sense to see an ENT specialist and assess the tonsils, rather than dealing with each flare-up separately.
Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.
Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.
Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.
Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.
Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

The technique is chosen individually, based on your condition, how often flare-ups occur, your age and other conditions. The main options are conventional surgery, laser, radiofrequency and cryosurgical removal. The extent of inflammation, your pain threshold, the risk of bleeding and the general state of your immune system all matter.
In Ukraine conventional tonsillectomy is performed most often: the surgeon removes the inflamed tonsils under local or general anaesthesia. The method completely removes the source of infection and reduces the risk of recurrent tonsillitis and related complications. Recovery after it takes 1–2 weeks.
The laser technique vaporises the affected tissue without incisions or significant bleeding: the procedure takes about 30 minutes, is done on an outpatient basis, and you go home the same day. The radiofrequency method has similar advantages: less pain, less tissue trauma and a shorter healing period.
For recurrent tonsillitis or complex anatomy, combined techniques are used, with laser and mechanical action together. This way the surgeon removes all the inflamed tissue and affects healthy areas as little as possible. Which option suits you becomes clear after an examination and endoscopy of the throat.
The operation does not end in the operating theatre: the clinic supports you during healing as well. In the first days a moderate sore throat, discomfort when swallowing and a feeling of dryness are possible: this is a normal reaction as the wound heals. Return to your usual routine gradually and avoid physical overexertion, hot drinks and hard foods for the first 1–2 weeks.
Everyone recovers at their own pace. With an uneventful recovery, patients return to work after 5–7 days, sometimes up to two weeks. The doctor makes the final assessment of full recovery at the follow-up visit.
Light activity helps: short walks improve well-being and circulation. Your diet should be soft and at room temperature: soups, purées and dairy products. Drink enough water and avoid alcohol, smoking and very hot food. Hot baths and saunas only with the doctor's permission.
If you develop a temperature, the pain gets worse, there is bleeding from the throat or your condition suddenly gets worse, contact the clinic promptly for an examination and adjustment of treatment.
A question almost everyone asks: will the body be left without protection? The tonsils are only part of the lymphoid ring of the throat, so after they are removed, neighbouring structures take over the protective work. Minimally invasive procedures, such as laser or radiofrequency tonsillectomy, do not weaken immunity when performed correctly, and the body adapts quickly.
The method is chosen individually. Before surgery the ENT specialist may order blood tests, swabs for microflora, an assessment of immunoglobulin levels and an examination of the mucosa. With chronic conditions or frequent flare-ups, the doctor discusses separately with you the possible consequences, the benefits of surgery and the recovery period. If the inflammation has dragged on or threatens complications, treatment should not be postponed.
Not everyone needs surgery. If the tonsils are only enlarged and cause no complications, the doctor may suggest conservative treatment with monitoring over time. The decision is made after an examination, laboratory tests and an assessment of your general health.
When planning tonsil removal (tonsillectomy), count not only the price of the operation itself but also consultations, diagnostics, anaesthesia, post-operative follow-up and accommodation. In Ukraine this total is lower because most clinics take you from examination to recovery at one centre. The hospital stay usually lasts 1–2 days.
Why are prices lower in Ukraine? First, the cost of medical services (consumables, premises, staff salaries) is noticeably lower than in EU countries or Turkey. Second, competition between private clinics pushes them to create transparent package offers with no hidden payments. Third, minimally invasive techniques shorten the hospital stay, and with it the patient's total bill.
The lower price does not mean lower standards: ENT centres follow international protocols and provide full anaesthetic support and sterile operating conditions. Experienced ENT surgeons routinely perform laser, radiofrequency and plasma procedures with predictable results and a low risk of complications.
Like any operation, it carries some risk, including bleeding during healing, but strict protocols keep it low. Private clinics in Ukraine work to European standards: full anaesthetic support, sterility control and monitoring of your condition after surgery. Laser, radiofrequency and plasma procedures are performed routinely, so the course of recovery is predictable, and strict protocols and supervision in the first days reduce the risk of complications.
Most clinics have specialised ENT surgeons and their own equipment, so you go through tests, surgery and follow-up care in one place. This reduces travel and gaps between stages of treatment.
When choosing a clinic, look at the number of procedures performed, the surgeon's experience, adherence to protocols and the transparency of the cost. Patient reviews, the speed of communication and the quality of post-operative support also matter.

📍 Uzhhorod, Ukraine
A multidisciplinary hospital in Uzhhorod, part of a network of medical facilities in western Ukraine: an outpatient clinic, a surgical centre covering 15 specialties and a 30-bed inpatient unit. Its 52 doctors include professors and PhDs; many operations are done as day surgery, with discharge after 1–2 days.
Tonsillectomy is the surgical removal of the palatine tonsils when, instead of protecting the body, they have become a constant source of infection, sustaining chronic throat inflammation, pain and complications affecting the heart or kidneys.
The price depends on the technique chosen (laser, radiofrequency or conventional), the type of anaesthesia and the level of the clinic. On average it starts from USD 367, and this amount usually includes tests, the operation and post-operative follow-up.
Citizens of most European countries do not need a visa; entry rules for other countries differ, so check the current requirements before the trip. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English, and MediUkraine can advise on travel arrangements and transfers.
The indications are chronic tonsillitis, frequent tonsillitis (more than 4–5 times a year), complications after inflammation or enlarged tonsils that make breathing difficult. The final decision is made by an ENT doctor after an examination.
Minimally invasive techniques (laser, radiofrequency, cold plasma) or conventional tonsillectomy are used. The choice depends on the condition of the tonsils and your indications.
Healing usually takes 7–10 days. During this time a gentle diet, rest and no hot drinks at all are recommended. You can return to an active life after two weeks.
No noticeable weakening of immunity is observed: other lymphoid structures of the throat take over the protective function, and the immune system adapts quickly. Instead, the focus that kept causing inflammation is gone.
