Biopsy of Tumours at Various Sites in Ukraine

A biopsy is the removal of a piece of tissue or individual cells from a growth for examination under a microscope. The sample is taken with a needle under ultrasound or CT guidance, through an endoscope or by open surgery: the method depends on where the tumour is and how deep it lies. Histological and cytological analysis shows whether the growth is benign, malignant or inflammatory, what cell type it is and how aggressive it is. These findings determine the extent of surgery and whether chemotherapy or radiotherapy is needed. The pathologist's report is usually ready within 5–10 working days.

Cost of tumour biopsy in Ukraine

Service🇺🇦 Ukraine🇨🇿 Czech Republic🇹🇷 Turkey
Tumour biopsy (various sites)from USD 41from USD 1,500from USD 2,000

Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.

About tumour biopsy

A tumour biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure after which the diagnosis is no longer an assumption. Imaging (ultrasound, CT, MRI) shows the size, borders and position of a growth, but not its cellular nature: that is established by the pathologist, who examines the sample under a microscope and determines the type of tumour and the degree of cell differentiation. The entire further plan depends on this report: the extent of surgery, the treatment regimen and the prognosis.

The sample is taken under ultrasound or CT guidance or through an endoscope; the guidance method is chosen according to the location of the lesion. Visual control keeps the tip of the needle within the lesion and reduces the risk of complications. The sample is sent for histological and immunohistochemical examination; the latter clarifies the origin of the growth based on markers on the cell surface.

The procedure is performed by experienced specialists. The histology report is usually ready within 5–10 days, and you take it to a consultation with an oncologist and a surgeon, who decide on further treatment.

Coming to Uzhhorod for treatment: what to expect

Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.

Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.

Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.

Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.

Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

When a doctor orders a biopsy

The reason is any growth whose nature cannot be determined by other methods: a lump in the tissues, enlarged lymph nodes, structural changes on ultrasound, CT or MRI, or a change in the colour or shape of tissue.
The guidance method is chosen according to where the lesion is: ultrasound, CT or an endoscope.
MediUkraine coordinates the tests for international patients: we align their timing with further treatment, arrange consultations with oncologists and pass on the results so that tests do not have to be repeated.

Preparing for the procedure

  1. Preparation starts with a consultation with an oncologist and basic tests.
  2. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and supplements that affect blood clotting, such as vitamin E, fish oil, ginkgo and garlic, are stopped 7–10 days before the test.
  3. On the day of your visit, bring your documents and the results of all previous tests: the doctor needs the scans and medical reports to plan access to the lesion.

Types of biopsy and sampling methods

The method is chosen according to the location of the tumour, how deep it lies and the clinical indications. Ultrasound-guided fine-needle biopsy is used for growths in the breast, the thyroid and the soft tissues. It provides enough material with minimal trauma and gives an accurate diagnosis in 95% of cases.

Endoscopic biopsy is the choice when a growth is suspected in the airways, the digestive tract or the urinary and reproductive organs. The doctor sees the lesion on the screen through the endoscope and takes a sample under direct vision, so diagnosis can be combined with a treatment procedure in a single session.

CT-guided percutaneous biopsy is needed for deep-seated tumours of solid organs, the mediastinum and the pelvis. CT allows the needle path to be planned around blood vessels and neighbouring organs, which keeps the risk of complications low. MediUkraine will clarify with the partner clinic in Uzhhorod which of these methods it performs.

Benefits of diagnosis at a specialist clinic

  • The clinic uses techniques that minimise tissue trauma and give high diagnostic accuracy.
  • The price of the test here is noticeably lower than at European and North American clinics.
  • The MediUkraine team will book you in at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod and explain how to prepare and what will happen.

What happens after a biopsy

Recovery depends on the method and the location of the lesion. After most procedures you return to your normal routine within 24–48 hours: if local anaesthesia was used, discomfort at the puncture site passes within a few days. After more invasive procedures, such as a transbronchial or transgastric biopsy, recovery takes up to a week.

For 3–5 days, avoid physical exertion, hot baths and swimming in open water. Small bruises at the puncture site are to be expected and fade on their own. Wound care is simple: a clean, dry dressing and no pressure or rubbing on the area, to prevent infection and bleeding.

Severe pain, bleeding, increasing swelling or signs of inflammation are reasons to seek medical help immediately, without waiting for the scheduled visit. Histology results are usually ready within 5–10 working days. MediUkraine specialists will pass on detailed aftercare advice and book you a consultation with the doctor who took the sample.

How a biopsy is performed

Sampling is a minimally invasive procedure in which the doctor obtains a fragment of tumour tissue for histological and cytological examination. The results show the type of growth, its degree of differentiation and the presence of specific markers; without these data a cancer treatment plan cannot be drawn up.

The technique depends on where the tumour is located. For soft tissues and abdominal organs, a needle biopsy under ultrasound or CT guidance is most often used. If lung cancer is suspected, a transbronchial biopsy is performed. Superficial growths are sometimes removed by open surgery, which gives a more representative sample. The choice is dictated by the location, size and accessibility of the lesion.

MediUkraine will check whether the partner clinic in Uzhhorod performs the type of sampling you need, from a needle biopsy of a superficial lump to a sample from a hard-to-reach lesion, and will take care of organising your visit.

Why is tumour biopsy more affordable in Ukraine?

Tissue confirmation of a growth is an essential stage of diagnosis, and in Ukraine it costs 40–60% less than in Western Europe and North America. The difference is explained by the structure of operating costs in the healthcare system, not by the equipment or the qualifications of the specialists.

Core needle biopsy and fine-needle aspiration biopsy under ultrasound or CT guidance are widely used in Ukraine. Costs are spread more economically, hence the more affordable price, without compromising patient safety.

MediUkraine organises diagnostic procedures at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod: we coordinate the tests, help with medical documents and arrange consultations with pathologists. This makes it easier to get quality care without excessive costs.

Safety of the procedure and risk control

Risks are kept to a minimum by following international protocols and by visual control: the sample is taken with sterile instruments under ultrasound, CT or endoscopic guidance, depending on the location of the growth. The material is examined by qualified pathologists, so the diagnosis is confirmed accurately and the treatment plan is based on facts rather than assumptions.

The partner clinic is accredited by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and has risk management protocols for minimally invasive procedures. Every stage, from taking the sample to laboratory processing, is controlled in line with established clinical guidelines.

MediUkraine coordinates communication with the doctors, supports you during the diagnostic process and makes sure all organisational arrangements are transparent.

Frequently asked questions

What is a tumour biopsy?

It is a diagnostic procedure: the doctor takes a tissue sample from the suspicious area, and a pathologist examines it under a microscope. The result shows whether the growth is malignant and establishes its type and grade.

How much does a tumour biopsy cost in Ukraine?

The price depends on the location of the tumour and how difficult it is to reach, the guidance equipment (ultrasound, CT, endoscope) and the type of laboratory test; immunohistochemistry is charged separately. Overall, the test costs less in Ukraine than at European clinics, with the same accuracy requirements.

When should I see a doctor?

Book an appointment with an oncologist if you notice a lump or growth that is painful or has changed colour or shape, if your lymph nodes are enlarged, or if you are losing weight for no reason. The doctor will examine the area, order imaging and decide whether a sample needs to be taken.

How do I prepare for a tumour biopsy?

Blood tests are usually needed, including clotting tests; blood-thinning medicines are paused only as agreed with the doctor who prescribed them. If the procedure is planned under anaesthesia, do not eat for a few hours beforehand. The exact list depends on the method: needle, endoscopic or open.

Can a biopsy be done during pregnancy or with other medical conditions?

In most cases, yes. The method and anaesthesia are chosen to keep the risk to mother and baby to a minimum, and ultrasound is preferred for guidance because it does not involve ionising radiation. The decision is made by the oncologist together with the gynaecologist.

What are the indications for a biopsy?

The main indications are a suspected malignant growth, enlarged lymph nodes, unexplained lumps and changes in tissue structure on ultrasound or MRI. The test confirms or rules out cancer and sets the course of further treatment.

Can I be cured if a biopsy confirms a tumour?

Taking a sample does not treat the disease: it is a diagnostic step, but the treatment strategy is built on its result. The chances of recovery depend on the histological type of the growth, its stage and location, your general health and how promptly treatment starts. Malignant tumours detected at early stages often go into complete remission, which is why oncologists insist on early diagnosis.

Cancer care has several treatment options: surgical removal, chemotherapy, radiotherapy and targeted therapy, which are combined to suit the individual case. Accurate pathology findings narrow the choice to the options that are appropriate in your situation. MediUkraine arranges a high-quality biopsy and a consultation with an oncologist at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, who will decide on the next steps based on the results.
