Lower Blepharoplasty in Ukraine

Lower blepharoplasty is a plastic surgery operation in which the surgeon removes bags under the eyes, excess skin and the fat herniation that bulges under the skin of the lower eyelid with age. The procedure gives you a rested look without changing your natural facial expressions. The approach is made either just below the lash line or from the inner lining of the eyelid; in the second case there is no visible scar at all. The operation is performed under local anaesthesia or sedation, patients return to their usual activities within 7-14 days, and the final result develops over 2-3 months.

Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.

About lower blepharoplasty

Lower blepharoplasty deals with what creams and cosmetic treatments cannot: the orbital fat bulges forward, the skin loses elasticity, and the boundary between the eyelid and the cheek becomes visible. With age, fat accumulates under the eyes, and bags, sagging skin and crow's feet appear. MediUkraine selects a clinic and a specialist to suit your particular anatomy.

Surgeons use a transconjunctival approach, through the inner surface of the eyelid, with no skin incision and no visible scar; through it, fat herniation is removed or redistributed. When excess skin also needs to be removed and the muscle layer of the eyelid tightened, an incision just below the lash line is used. A laser is also used to improve skin density and stimulate collagen.

The first changes are visible after 1-2 weeks, and the final picture develops over 2-3 months. Patients notice a brighter, more open look and a less tired face. Returning to your usual routine takes 5-7 days, and bruising and swelling stay moderate if you follow your surgeon's instructions.

MediUkraine guides you from your first enquiry to the consultation, at which the surgeon assesses the anatomy of your periorbital area and proposes a surgical plan based on the condition of the tissues and your expectations.

Coming to Uzhhorod for treatment: what to expect

Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.

Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.

Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.

Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.

Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

Why patients choose Ukrainian surgeons

Ukrainian oculoplastic surgeons work at clinics licensed by the Ministry of Health of Ukraine for medical practice in the specialty of plastic surgery.
The second difference is an individual approach, without rushing and without a conveyor-belt system.
MediUkraine selects a clinic, agrees the terms, can advise on transfers and supports you during your stay.

Preparation: what to do two weeks before surgery

  1. Preparation begins at least two weeks in advance: this is when you stop blood-thinning medicines, including aspirin and warfarin.
  2. Three days before surgery, stop drinking alcohol and smoking: they slow healing and increase swelling.
  3. The day before, cleanse your face thoroughly with mild soap and do not overeat: your last meal should be 6 hours before surgery.

Lower eyelid correction techniques

Traditional surgical blepharoplasty remains the core method. The surgeon makes an incision just below the lash line or on the inner side of the eyelid and removes excess skin and fat herniation. The result usually lasts 10-15 years. The operation is performed under local or general anaesthesia, and recovery takes 2-3 weeks.

Laser blepharoplasty is performed with a CO₂ or erbium laser, which removes excess skin and stimulates collagen synthesis at the same time. The method is less invasive, the tissue cut is more precise and healing is faster: recovery takes 1-2 weeks, and the result appears gradually over two months.

Non-invasive and minimally invasive methods (radiofrequency rejuvenation, microneedling and fillers) are appropriate only for minimal changes in the lower eyelids. They improve skin tone and reduce fine wrinkles and puffiness without incisions. The effect lasts 6-12 months, and practically no recovery is needed.

The MediUkraine platform brings together specialists who work with all three groups of techniques. We will suggest which option matches your needs and budget and find you a clinic.

Benefits of lower eyelid surgery

  • The operation is performed under local anaesthesia or sedation, so the risks associated with general anaesthesia are lower.
  • MediUkraine finds an experienced surgeon, agrees the date of surgery and guides you through the whole treatment cycle.

Rehabilitation: what to expect after surgery

Patients return to their usual activities within 7-14 days. For the first 48 hours there is puffiness, bruising and mild discomfort around the eyes; this is an expected tissue reaction that gradually subsides. During this period it is important to apply cold and sleep with your head raised, as your surgeon has instructed, so that the swelling goes down faster.

During the first week, avoid intense physical exertion, sport and anything that raises your blood pressure. Bathing and visits to the sauna are not allowed. Dark glasses will protect your eyes from sunlight and reduce discomfort, and eye drops prescribed by your surgeon prevent dryness and speed up healing.

Bruising and puffiness resolve within 3-4 weeks, and the outcome of the operation is assessed after 1-2 months, when the tissues have finished remodelling. When you choose a clinic through MediUkraine, you receive detailed rehabilitation instructions and can contact a specialist at any stage of your recovery.

The aesthetic and functional side of the procedure

Lower eyelid correction is not only about appearance. Indications include a sagging eyelid margin, persistent bags under the eyes and scarring changes: they alter the appearance of the face and at the same time affect how the eye functions. During the operation the surgeon removes excess skin and fatty tissue and tightens the soft tissues that have descended with age.

There are two approaches. The traditional one is an incision just below the lash line, through which excess tissue is removed and a lift is performed. The transconjunctival one is an incision on the inner lining of the eyelid, after which scars are practically invisible. The choice depends on how much the eyelid sags and on your individual characteristics.

Through the MediUkraine platform you can find vetted surgeons who specialise in eyelid surgery, compare clinics' offers and book a consultation without intermediary fees.

Why is lower blepharoplasty more affordable in Ukraine?

Lower blepharoplasty in Ukraine costs noticeably less than the same operation in European countries and the USA. In Germany or Poland, the same amount of surgical work costs from 3 to 5 thousand euros. The difference comes from lower operating costs, medical staff pay and overheads.

The savings do not affect qualifications: the clinic operates under a medical practice licence from the Ministry of Health of Ukraine and provides the surgeon's education and training documents on request. The operating theatres are equipped with high-quality optics, electrocoagulation and instruments for precise control of bleeding, and the course of surgery and subsequent healing depend on exactly these.

MediUkraine finds a reliable clinic with experienced surgeons, arranges a consultation and coordinates the whole treatment process. The cost is agreed before surgery, so you know the final amount and what exactly you are paying for in advance.

Is lower eyelid surgery safe?

It is a procedure performed according to international plastic surgery protocols. Precision equipment makes it possible to remove excess skin, fat herniation and under-eye puffiness precisely and gently, so scars are usually barely noticeable and the risk of damage to neighbouring structures is kept to a minimum.

The operation is overseen by an experienced plastic surgeon, who chooses the correction method based on your facial anatomy, age and skin condition. The procedure is performed under local or short-acting anaesthesia, so even people with heightened sensitivity tolerate it comfortably. An individual plan lowers the likelihood of complications.

Leading clinics in Ukraine have sterility protocols, safety checks and post-operative support. After surgery you receive recommendations on caring for the eyelid area and, if needed, a short course of restorative therapy. Rehabilitation lasts a few days, after which you can return to your usual way of life.

The next step is a consultation: the surgeon assesses the condition of your skin and eyelids and agrees the approach, the type of anaesthesia and the date of surgery. You can book an appointment with a specialist through MediUkraine.

Frequently asked questions

What is lower blepharoplasty?

It is a low-trauma surgical procedure in which the surgeon removes bags under the eyes, excess skin and fat herniation. The face usually looks fresher and more rested, and natural facial expressions are preserved. The operation is performed under local or short-acting anaesthesia, and a long hospital stay is not needed.

How much does lower blepharoplasty cost in Ukraine?

The price depends on the complexity of the procedure, the type of anaesthesia and the level of the clinic. On average it is from USD 403 (excluding anaesthesia). The clinic states what this amount includes (consultation, the surgeon's work, anaesthesia and follow-up visits) in the quote before surgery.

When should you see a doctor?

It is worth seeing a plastic surgeon if you have persistent puffiness, pronounced wrinkles or ‘bags’ under your eyes that do not go away after sleep or cosmetic treatments. Another reason is a tired or sad expression caused by excess skin and sagging tissue under the eyes.

How do you prepare for lower blepharoplasty?

Before surgery you have a consultation: the doctor assesses the condition of your skin, your anatomy and your general health. A few days before, it is advisable to give up alcohol, coffee and smoking, and to agree any use of anticoagulants with your doctor. The day before, try to get a good night's sleep, and come without make-up.

Can blepharoplasty be performed during pregnancy or with other medical conditions?

The operation is not performed during pregnancy, breastfeeding or a flare-up of a chronic disease. Whether to operate is decided only after a full examination and consultation with a surgeon and a general physician, so as not to put your health at risk.

How long does recovery after lower blepharoplasty take?

The recovery period is usually 1-2 weeks before you return to normal activity. In the first days after surgery there may be swelling, bruising and slight discharge. The surgeon prescribes cold compresses and special eye drops to speed up healing. The stitches are removed on day 5-7, and your appearance usually improves noticeably.

The swelling resolves completely and the scars mature over 4-6 weeks. During this time avoid intense physical exertion, saunas and sunbeds. Slight asymmetry in the first weeks is a normal reaction. If you are considering this procedure, the MediUkraine team will find you a clinic with experienced plastic surgeons who will explain in detail what to expect at each stage of your recovery.

Can sagging lower eyelids be corrected permanently?

This is a correction of aesthetic and functional changes, not treatment of a disease. When the cause is ageing (loss of skin elasticity, weakening of the muscles, accumulation of fat), the operation removes excess tissue and tightens the structures. The result usually lasts a long time, but ageing continues, so a repeat procedure may be needed after 10-15 years; only a doctor can predict the result for an individual patient after an in-person examination.

If the sagging is caused by neurological disorders, ptosis or facial nerve palsy, surgery corrects the aesthetic defect but does not affect the underlying condition; in that case it complements the main treatment. The surgeons you reach through MediUkraine will give you a detailed consultation, determine whether the operation is indicated for you and discuss realistic expectations of the result.
