Curvature develops when an area of the tunica albuginea surrounding the corpora cavernosa loses its elasticity: during erection it does not stretch as much as the healthy tissue, and the axis of the penis deviates. The surgeon corrects exactly this imbalance, either by shortening the opposite side with precise sutures without removing tissue, or by releasing the affected area from fibrosis and closing the defect with a graft.
