Meniscus Tear Treatment in Ukraine

A torn meniscus is treated in one of two ways: arthroscopic repair, when the cartilage pad can be preserved, or resection of the damaged area. The approach is decided on the basis of an MRI, the type of tear, the patient's age and level of activity. The procedure is performed through a few millimetre-sized punctures, so blood loss is minimal and the hospital stay lasts up to one day. The MediUkraine team arranges treatment with an orthopaedic trauma surgeon at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, agrees a quote listing everything it includes, and supports you from consultation and diagnostics (MRI, ultrasound) to surgery, rehabilitation and the follow-up examination.

Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.

What a meniscus tear is and how it is treated

The menisci are two crescent-shaped cartilage pads in the knee joint: they absorb impact, distribute pressure across the joint surface and keep the knee stable. When the fibres tear, the loose fragment starts to get in the way of movement, causing pain, swelling and a feeling that the joint ‘locks’. The type and location of the tear and the patient's age and level of physical activity determine whether the meniscus can be repaired or whether the damaged area has to be removed. The approach is chosen after an MRI, ultrasound or clinical examination by an orthopaedic trauma surgeon, from conservative therapy to minimally invasive meniscus arthroscopy.

The key advantage of the minimally invasive approach is low tissue trauma. Through an arthroscopic approach with a few punctures, the surgeon precisely removes or repairs the damaged area of the meniscus. Blood loss is minimal and the risk of complications is lower. After partial removal, patients usually return to their usual activity within 1–2 weeks; after a repair, recovery takes longer.

During knee arthroscopy the doctor inserts a miniature camera and instruments through a few millimetre-sized incisions. Healthy tissue is not damaged, so the structure of the meniscus can be restored. In more complex cases the torn part is partly removed or a reconstruction is performed. This approach preserves the stability and full mobility of the knee, which is critical for athletes and active people.

A meniscus tear is a common knee injury in patients of all ages. Delaying diagnosis leads to chronic pain, restricted movement and wear of the cartilage, up to osteoarthritis. A practical next step: if the pain lasts more than a few weeks or the knee locks again, book an MRI and a consultation with an orthopaedic trauma surgeon.

Coming to Uzhhorod for treatment: what to expect

Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.

Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.

Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.

Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.

Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

When a meniscus tear needs surgery

Meniscus injuries do not only happen to athletes: a sharp twist on the standing leg or a blow to the knee is enough.
Surgery is recommended when conservative treatment has not worked, the knee keeps locking, movement is restricted or there is ‘clicking’ when walking.
Some patients are managed conservatively, with physiotherapy, medication, braces and reduced load.

Preparing for knee arthroscopy

  1. The examination before surgery has two goals: to confirm the diagnosis and to make sure you will tolerate anaesthesia well.
  2. Be sure to list all the medicines you take: anticoagulants, blood pressure medication, anti-inflammatories and dietary supplements.
  3. A few days before the operation, give up alcohol and smoking, establish a regular sleep pattern and make sure your haemoglobin level is normal.

Types of procedure for a meniscus tear

Treatment methods for a meniscus tear are chosen individually, according to the type of damage, its location, the patient's age, level of physical activity and any associated injuries. There are three main approaches: conservative therapy, physiotherapy, or a minimally invasive surgical procedure, meniscus arthroscopy. Patients are referred for surgery when there is pain, locking of the knee, swelling or restricted movement.

The standard method in orthopaedics is arthroscopic meniscus repair. Through tiny punctures the surgeon inserts an arthroscope and instruments and repairs or removes only the damaged area of tissue. The healthy structures of the joint remain intact, pain decreases and rehabilitation is shorter. Patients usually start walking within a few days; after partial removal full recovery takes 2–4 weeks, while a repaired meniscus needs a longer recovery.

The alternative is partial meniscectomy, that is, removal of fragments of the torn meniscus that obstruct movement or sustain inflammation. It is used for complex or chronic injuries, when the structure can no longer be fully preserved. These operations are performed as day cases, under spinal or general anaesthesia, without a long hospital stay.

When the tear is combined with damage to cartilage or ligaments, reconstructive arthroscopy is performed to restore the stability of the knee joint. But in most cases large incisions are avoided, and you return to your normal routine within a few weeks.

Benefits of minimally invasive arthroscopy

  • Arthroscopic treatment of a meniscus tear relieves pain and swelling and restores full mobility of the knee without a long recovery.
  • Restored natural knee function.
  • Fewer symptoms and a better quality of life.
  • Preservation of joint structures.

Rehabilitation after meniscus arthroscopy

Treatment of a meniscus tear does not end on the operating table: the result depends on how the following weeks go. In the first few days there may be mild swelling or a feeling of tightness in the knee; this is a normal tissue response. Return to your usual activity gradually, but avoid physical strain and prolonged standing or sitting for the first 1–2 weeks. Drive only with the doctor's permission, once movement in the knee has fully returned.

When you can return to work depends on the type of procedure. After arthroscopy, 5–7 days are enough for office work, and up to 2–3 weeks for physical work. The orthopaedic trauma surgeon allows full loading after a follow-up examination.

Moderate daily activity speeds up healing: short walks improve blood flow. Therapeutic exercise is added next, while running, jumping and the gym are allowed only with the doctor's permission. Eat a balanced diet, drink enough water, and avoid alcohol, smoking, saunas and hot baths in the first weeks after the procedure.

A fever, severe pain, swelling or restricted movement are reasons to contact the clinic immediately for an examination and adjustment of the recovery plan.

Meniscus tear treatment and restoring knee function

The aim of the procedure is not only to relieve pain, swelling or restricted movement but also to restore full knee function. For athletes and active people this is the decisive criterion: the method must preserve the stability and mobility of the joint. Most minimally invasive operations, including arthroscopic repair or resection of the meniscus, preserve natural anatomy and the full weight-bearing capacity of the leg when performed correctly.

The method is chosen individually. Before surgery the orthopaedic surgeon orders an MRI and assesses the extent of the tear and the condition of the cartilage and ligaments. With minor damage, conservative therapy or injection treatment to reduce inflammation may be possible. If the tear is significant and the joint locks, the doctor will suggest an arthroscopic procedure, which is precise and low-trauma.

Not everyone needs surgery. With minor damage or mild symptoms, the doctor may advise conservative treatment with ongoing monitoring and a follow-up MRI. The final decision takes into account the level of pain, age, lifestyle and future physical activity.

Why is meniscus tear treatment more affordable in Ukraine?

When planning treatment for a meniscus tear, count not only the cost of the operation itself but also the overall expenses: accommodation, examinations, medication, post-operative care and rehabilitation. In Ukraine the total is mostly lower, because diagnostics, consultations and surgery take place in one centre, and the hospital stay lasts only 1–2 days.

Why are prices lower in Ukraine? First, the cost of providing medical services, including the cost of a hospital day, consumables, rent and salaries, is considerably lower than in EU countries or Turkey. Second, competition between private clinics produces transparent package offers with no hidden charges. Third, minimally invasive arthroscopy keeps the hospital stay to a minimum, which directly affects the final amount.

At the same time, a lower price does not mean lower standards: orthopaedic centres work according to international protocols, provide anaesthetic support, follow the principles of infection control and monitor patients after surgery. Experienced orthopaedic surgeons perform arthroscopy routinely, and the predictability of the result comes from this volume of work and adherence to protocols.

Is meniscus surgery at Ukrainian clinics safe?

It is a routine operation with a low risk of complications, although, like any surgery, it carries some risk. Private clinics work according to European orthopaedic standards: full anaesthetic support, strict infection control and careful post-operative monitoring. Arthroscopy for a meniscus tear is performed routinely, with a short hospital stay (1 day or as a day case) and a predictable recovery. Many clinics have specialised orthopaedic trauma surgeons and the facilities to complete diagnosis and treatment in one place.

When choosing a clinic, ask about the number of arthroscopies performed, the experience of the specific surgeon, adherence to protocols and the transparency of the quote.

Frequently asked questions

What is a meniscus tear?

A meniscus tear is an injury to the cartilage pad in the knee joint that absorbs load and keeps movement stable. It most often happens with a sharp twist on the standing leg or excessive load on the knee.

How much does meniscus tear treatment cost in Ukraine?

Arthroscopic meniscus treatment in Ukraine costs noticeably less than in EU countries or Turkey and starts at USD 440. This amount includes diagnostics, surgery, anaesthesia and short-term post-operative care.

Do I need a visa for Ukraine?

Patients from most European countries do not need a visa. Citizens of other countries should check the entry requirements in advance.

Am I suitable for meniscus tear surgery?

Arthroscopy is considered when there is pain, swelling or locking of the knee, or when conservative treatment has not worked. The doctor decides whether surgery is appropriate after an MRI and an examination.

What methods of treating a meniscus tear are there?

Arthroscopic repair that preserves the meniscus, partial resection or reconstruction. The method is chosen individually, according to the type and location of the tear.

How long does the recovery period last?

After arthroscopy the knee heals quickly: the first steps are possible after 1–2 days, and full recovery takes 4–6 weeks under the supervision of a physiotherapist.

Does meniscus tear treatment affect joint mobility?

Yes, usually for the better: arthroscopic techniques aim to restore range of movement, relieve pain and prevent further wear of the cartilage.
