Gynaecological Check-up in Ukraine

A gynaecological check-up is a set of examinations that shows the state of the cervix, endometrium, ovaries and hormones in a single visit. The basic programme usually includes an examination, a pelvic ultrasound, a smear for vaginal flora and cytology; the extended programme adds colposcopy, tests for infections and a hormone profile. It is recommended once a year, and also before planning a pregnancy or if you have symptoms such as an irregular cycle, lower abdominal pain or unusual discharge. The examination is scheduled for days 5–12 of the cycle and takes 30–60 minutes.

Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.

About the gynaecological check-up

The logic of this examination is simple: most gynaecological problems, such as cervical ectropion, polyps, ovarian cysts and chronic inflammation, cause no symptoms for a long time and are only detected by examination and imaging. That is why the doctor looks not at a single complaint but at several aspects at once: ultrasound shows the structure of the uterus and ovaries, a smear shows the vaginal flora and signs of inflammation, cytology shows the state of the cervical cells and blood tests show hormone levels. Together these data form a picture that shows both current changes and risks for the years ahead.

The second feature of the programme is personalisation. Once the results are in, the gynaecologist compares them with your symptoms, age and plans, and then draws up a plan for monitoring or treatment. The scope is chosen individually: for some women the basic part is enough, while others need an extended hormone profile, colposcopy, cytology or an assessment of fertility potential. Together with the report, you receive advice on diet, prevention, preparing for pregnancy or regulating your cycle. A gynaecological check-up is recommended every year even without symptoms: a yearly interval makes it possible to see changes over time.

Coming to Uzhhorod for treatment: what to expect

Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.

Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.

Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.

Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.

Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

Who should have the check-up

A gynaecological check-up is recommended for all women regardless of age, including those with no symptoms at all.
Do not wait for a routine visit if you develop irregular or painful periods, bleeding between periods, pain during sex, lower abdominal discomfort or signs of hormonal disorders.

How to prepare for the examination

  1. The date of the visit is not chosen at random: some tests are informative only on certain days of the cycle.
  2. Preparation for the check-up starts 3–5 days before the planned date.
  3. On the day of the visit, normal hygiene is enough; do not use intimate antiseptics.
  4. The MediUkraine team will find a gynaecologist and agree a convenient appointment time.

Diagnostic methods: from ultrasound to hysteroscopy

A gynaecological check-up consists of several methods that complement each other. Transvaginal ultrasound shows the structure of the uterus and ovaries in detail and detects polyps, fibroids and cysts. It is the first-line method in an initial examination: it is highly informative and causes minimal discomfort.

Colposcopy is needed when cytology screening has shown changes in the cervix. The cervix is examined under magnification and, if needed, a targeted sample is taken for histology. This distinguishes precancerous and cancerous changes at an early stage.

The laboratory part includes cytology screening (Pap test), tests for sexually transmitted infections and a hormone profile. When indicated, hysteroscopy is ordered: an endoscopic examination of the uterine cavity during which abnormal growths can be removed in the same visit.

MediUkraine arranges the check-up with gynaecologists at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod and coordinates the whole pathway, from booking to receiving the results.

Benefits of a comprehensive examination

  • The advantage of a comprehensive programme is that the doctor receives all the data on your reproductive system at once and compares them, rather than collecting one test at a time over several months.

What to do after the check-up

After the visit, you receive your results, prescriptions and advice on diet, routine and preventing the risks identified. If a result is outside the normal range, the doctor explains straight away what it means and what the next step will be: a repeat test, a consultation with another specialist or the start of treatment. Keep the report: next time the doctor will compare new results with it.

In the first weeks, do not put off what has been prescribed: additional tests, a follow-up ultrasound or a visit for histology results. If a repeat ultrasound is needed, it is also scheduled for the first half of the cycle. If the doctor advised limiting physical activity, follow this advice until the next check. When specific changes are found, the gynaecologist draws up a personal treatment or prevention plan and monitors your condition over time.

Slight discomfort after colposcopy or smears is a normal reaction that goes away on its own. But pain, unusual discharge or changes in your cycle are a reason to call the clinic without waiting for a scheduled visit. If you have no symptoms, the next check is scheduled a year later.

What happens at the appointment and how long it takes

A gynaecological check-up starts with a conversation: the doctor takes your medical history, including your cycle, past illnesses and operations, and reproductive plans. Your answers determine which tests are included in the programme. This is followed by a breast examination and a gynaecological examination using a speculum and a manual examination.

The next stage is a pelvic ultrasound, either transvaginal or transabdominal, which shows the uterus and ovaries and any abnormalities. When indicated, the doctor adds cervical cytology (Pap test), smear microscopy and molecular testing for human papillomavirus.

MediUkraine arranges your appointment with licensed specialists at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod and keeps the booking process transparent.

Why a gynaecological check-up costs less in Ukraine

A gynaecological check-up in Ukraine costs 40-60% less than similar services in the European Union and the USA. The reason is not a simplified programme but the cost structure: running a facility, staff salaries and utilities are cheaper here, while the examination protocols remain international. Private clinics use diagnostic equipment of the same class, such as high-resolution ultrasound, colour Doppler and digital colposcopes, so the amount of information the doctor receives is no less than abroad.

In Poland and the Czech Republic, a basic gynaecological examination with a pelvic ultrasound costs EUR 100-150. In Ukraine, both the basic examination and the extended diagnostic programme with colposcopy and laboratory tests cost considerably less.

MediUkraine arranges the check-up at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod and agrees the appointment date; the clinic's team communicates with international patients in English. Prices are shown before you book, so as an international patient you can calculate your diagnostic costs in advance.

Is this examination safe?

Yes. The examination follows international protocols for gynaecological examinations: instrument sterility is checked separately, and the procedures themselves are minimally invasive. Ultrasound, the basis of the programme, does not involve ionising radiation, so it can be repeated as often as needed for monitoring. Your data remain confidential.

The examination is carried out by gynaecologists who take into account your test results, hormone levels, medical history and reproductive plans. This means the conclusion concerns your situation rather than an "average patient": some methods are ordered, and others are deliberately left out if they are not needed.

The doctor supports you at every stage, from taking your medical history to explaining the results and giving recommendations. At the end you have a written report, a plan of action and a schedule of follow-up visits.

Frequently asked questions

What is a gynaecological check-up?

A gynaecological check-up is a comprehensive preventive examination that assesses the female reproductive system: it detects inflammatory changes, hormonal disorders, infections and early signs of precancerous changes. The programme usually includes a pelvic examination, a pelvic ultrasound, smears, cytology and tests that the doctor chooses individually. A routine check is done once a year.

How much does a gynaecological check-up cost in Ukraine?

The cost depends on the scope of the examination. Ultrasound, hormone tests, bacteriological tests and tests for sexually transmitted infections may be added to the programme, and the exact amount is known after the consultation.

When should you see a doctor for a check-up?

Routinely, at least once a year. If you have symptoms, see a doctor straight away: an irregular cycle, lower abdominal pain, unusual discharge, itching, bleeding between periods or pain during sex. The examination is also indicated before planning a pregnancy and after gynaecological conditions.

How do I prepare for a gynaecological check-up?

Preparation is minimal:
• the examination is done on days 5–12 of the cycle;
• avoid sex for 2–3 days beforehand;
• do not use vaginal suppositories, creams or douches;
• on the day of the examination, do not use antiseptics for intimate hygiene.
If tests or an ultrasound are planned, the doctor will give you additional instructions.

Can I have a gynaecological check-up during pregnancy or if I have other conditions?

Yes, the examination can be done during pregnancy, but the programme is adjusted to the stage of pregnancy. Only procedures that are not appropriate in pregnancy, such as certain invasive procedures or tests, are left out. With other conditions a check-up is also possible: the doctor chooses safe and informative diagnostic methods.

What are the indications for a gynaecological check-up?

• routine prevention once a year;
• preparing for pregnancy;
• an irregular cycle, pain or bleeding;
• suspected infections or hormonal disorders;
• previous gynaecological surgery;
• cysts, polyps, cervical ectropion or endometriosis;
• changes in previous test results.

Can what is found during the check-up be treated?

The outlook depends on which conditions the doctor found during the examination.

Many gynaecological conditions detected at an early stage can be cured completely. These include inflammation, infections, functional cycle disorders and some growths. For a lasting result, it is important to start treatment in time and follow the specialist's instructions.

Chronic gynaecological conditions, such as endometriosis or polycystic ovary syndrome, are usually controlled rather than cured completely. In these cases the check-up provides the basis for a long-term management strategy and prevention of complications. MediUkraine will find a gynaecologist who will carry out a thorough examination and draw up a personal treatment plan. Early detection of disorders noticeably improves the chances of successful treatment.
