Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.
Surgery is the main treatment for localised and locally advanced disease. Its technical basis is total mesorectal excision (TME): the rectum is removed in a single block together with the surrounding fatty tissue that contains the lymphatic pathways. Oncological principles require the regional lymph nodes and the adjacent tissues to be removed with this block.
Depending on the location of the tumour and your condition, surgeons choose an anterior resection of the rectum, an abdominoperineal resection or a Hartmann's procedure. Minimally invasive options, laparoscopic and robot-assisted, shorten rehabilitation and reduce surgical trauma without being any less oncologically adequate than open surgery.
The outcome depends on the stage of the disease, the quality of the operation and subsequent adjuvant therapy. With the right approach and the full course of indicated treatment, five-year survival reaches 50–75%.
The MediUkraine team will arrange a consultation with an experienced colorectal surgeon and book the tests you need at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, which works to international standards.
Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.
Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.
Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.
Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.
Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

Radical resection is the main option: the tumour is removed together with the surrounding tissues and lymph nodes. The extent depends on the location and stage of the disease. For tumours of the upper third of the rectum, an anterior resection with a primary anastomosis is performed. Tumours of the middle and lower thirds more often require a low anterior resection or an abdominoperineal resection with a permanent colostomy.
Minimally invasive approaches, laparoscopic and robot-assisted operations, cause less soft tissue trauma, shorten rehabilitation and lead to less pain after the operation. In terms of oncological control they are no worse than open operations, and there are fewer complications.
The surgeon chooses the technique based on the characteristics of the tumour, your physical condition and the facilities of the clinic. MediUkraine arranges treatment at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, where rectal cancer surgery is planned around the specifics of your case.
Rehabilitation has a direct impact on your life afterwards. It starts from discharge from hospital and lasts several months. The first weeks mean a gentle diet, no heavy exertion and regular dressing changes. The pace of returning to your usual activities is set by the surgeon or a colorectal specialist: it depends on the extent of the operation and your general condition.
Activity is increased gradually and under the supervision of medical staff. Walks, gentle exercise and yoga usually start 2–4 weeks after the operation. Psychological support is needed at the same time, especially if a colostomy has been formed. When you can return to work depends on the kind of work: people return to desk work sooner than to physically demanding jobs.
MediUkraine draws up a rehabilitation programme together with the clinic and makes sure your follow-up with specialists is not interrupted. We will remind you about the consultations and check-ups you need and arrange further treatment at any stage of recovery.
The extent of the operation is determined by the location of the tumour, its size, how far it has spread and your general condition. The operations most often performed are an anterior resection of the rectum, an abdominoperineal resection or a Hartmann's procedure with the formation of a temporary or permanent colostomy.
Cancer surgery in Ukraine relies on modern minimally invasive techniques, laparoscopic and robot-assisted operations, which shorten rehabilitation and reduce the risk of complications. If the tumour has spread locally, combined operations with resection of adjacent organs are performed. The operation is often supplemented with neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy before it or adjuvant chemotherapy after it.
The decision is not made by one doctor: the approach is determined by a multidisciplinary team based on MRI, endoscopy and histology results. The MediUkraine team arranges treatment at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, where this approach is worked out and you are supported at every stage of treatment.
Rectal cancer surgery in Ukraine costs less, and this is not about saving on the quality of care. At specialised cancer centres the price is 40–60% of the prices at European clinics, and surgeons are skilled in minimally invasive surgery, including laparoscopic operations.
Ukrainian cancer centres have diagnostic and surgical equipment for a full pre-operative assessment, so the treatment plan is drawn up for the individual patient. Waiting lists are short and scheduling is flexible: treatment usually starts within 1–2 weeks of your enquiry, which is critical in oncology.
MediUkraine guides international patients through the whole journey: from consultations with colorectal surgeons and surgical oncologists to admission and follow-up. We coordinate your tests and treatment plan, and the clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.
The safety of the operation at Ukrainian clinics rests on protocols, not promises. Operating theatres meet sanitary standards and have sterilisation and monitoring systems. Before the operation you have CT, MRI and endoscopy, so the surgeon plans the operation in detail, and this reduces the risks.
Clinics that specialise in cancer surgery follow international clinical guidelines. The team consists of a surgical oncologist, an anaesthetist and intensive care specialists. Perioperative care includes the control of infectious complications, pain relief and rehabilitation.
MediUkraine gives you access to the vetted partner clinic in Uzhhorod with documented experience in treating colorectal cancer. We coordinate tests, arrange consultations and monitor quality at every stage.

📍 Uzhhorod, Ukraine
A multidisciplinary hospital in Uzhhorod, part of a network of medical facilities in western Ukraine: an outpatient clinic, a surgical centre covering 15 specialties and a 30-bed inpatient unit. Its 52 doctors include professors and PhDs; many operations are done as day surgery, with discharge after 1–2 days.
It is an operation in which the tumour is removed together with the affected section of the bowel and the surrounding tissues. The aim is to remove the malignant growth, preserve bowel function where possible and prevent the disease from spreading further through metastases.
The price depends on the stage of the disease, the extent of the operation, the type of anaesthesia and the technologies used. On average, the operation at Ukrainian clinics costs 3–5 times less than in European countries, with the same international quality standards. The price usually includes a consultation with a surgical oncologist, diagnostics, the operation, anaesthesia and post-operative care.
Reasons to book an appointment with an oncologist or a colorectal specialist include blood in the stool, pain or discomfort when opening your bowels, a feeling of incomplete emptying, sudden weight loss, and prolonged constipation or diarrhoea. The earlier the diagnosis is made, the higher the chances of successful treatment without serious consequences.
Before the operation you have a full work-up: tests, a CT or MRI scan and a colonoscopy. A few days beforehand the doctor prescribes a diet without heavy food and bowel cleansing with special preparations. On the day of the operation you must have an empty stomach. The type of anaesthesia and the approach, laparoscopic or open, are agreed separately.
Yes, in certain cases. The decision is made jointly by an oncologist and an obstetrician-gynaecologist. In early pregnancy the operation is sometimes postponed to a safer period, but when the mother's life is at risk, surgery is performed immediately, following all safety protocols.
Surgery is performed for a confirmed malignant tumour, when conservative treatment has not worked, or when complications are present: bleeding, bowel obstruction or growth of the tumour into neighbouring organs. Surgery is also indicated for local metastases if they can be removed completely.
The prognosis depends on the stage at diagnosis. When the tumour is found at stage I–II, five-year survival reaches 80–90%, and timely surgery often leads to complete remission. Even at stage III, combined treatment, pre-operative chemoradiotherapy plus surgery, noticeably increases the chances of recovery.
Rectal cancer develops relatively slowly, so early detection programmes make a tangible difference. Removing the tumour within healthy tissue, with mandatory removal of the lymph nodes, remains the main radical method. Minimally invasive laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgery, used at Ukrainian clinics, improves both results and quality of life after the operation. MediUkraine arranges treatment at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod and guides you through the whole process, from the first consultation to follow-up check-ups.
