Thyroid Cancer Surgery in Ukraine

Surgery is recommended for localised thyroid cancer, when the tumour has not spread beyond the gland and the lymph nodes of the neck. The aim is to remove all tumour tissue and reduce the risk of recurrence. Intraoperative monitoring of the laryngeal nerve lowers the risk of voice complications. After discharge you take levothyroxine and, if indicated, have radioactive iodine therapy. Prices start from USD 601.

A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.

About thyroid cancer surgery

Thyroid surgery removes the source of tumour cells: the surgeon removes the whole gland (thyroidectomy) or one lobe and, if needed, the lymph nodes of the neck. The extent of surgery is decided individually based on ultrasound, fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNAB) and CT results, and on the histological type and stage of the tumour.

Minimally invasive endoscopic approaches reduce surgical trauma and shorten rehabilitation. A separate task for the surgeon is to find and preserve the recurrent laryngeal nerves and the parathyroid glands: your voice and calcium metabolism after surgery depend on them.

Examination of the removed tissue clarifies the diagnosis, shows whether the tumour has spread beyond the gland and determines the extent of further treatment. Most patients tolerate the operation itself well, and discharge is usually on day 1–2.

The MediUkraine platform arranges a consultation with a surgical oncologist at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, who will draw up a treatment plan.

Coming to Uzhhorod for treatment: what to expect

Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.

Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.

Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.

Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.

Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

Techniques, protocols and patient support

Thyroid surgery in Ukraine combines accessible techniques with moderate prices.
Surgeons and anaesthetists work according to international protocols and the TNM classification, for both differentiated and medullary thyroid cancer.
The treatment plan takes into account the histological type of the tumour, its size and whether there are metastases.

Preparing for thyroid surgery

  1. Preparation for surgery is a set of tests that show the state of the gland and whether you are ready for anaesthesia.
  2. The diagnosis must be confirmed by cytology or histology, with a fine-needle or core needle biopsy under ultrasound guidance.

Types of surgery for thyroid cancer

Surgery remains the main treatment for thyroid cancer. The extent of the operation depends on the type of tumour, its size, how far it has spread and its histological characteristics. Thyroidectomy, removal of the whole gland, is performed in most cases of differentiated cancer to reduce the risk of recurrence. For small low-risk tumours, a hemithyroidectomy (removal of one lobe) may be possible, which preserves part of the gland's function and lowers the likelihood of hypothyroidism.

The neck lymph nodes are often removed together with the gland. If there are metastases in the regional nodes, a central (level VI) or lateral neck dissection is performed so that no affected structures are left behind. This noticeably improves the prognosis and reduces the likelihood of recurrence.

MediUkraine arranges treatment with an experienced surgeon at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod in line with current protocols. After surgery the doctor prescribes hormone replacement therapy and, if indicated, radioactive iodine therapy.

Benefits of surgery in Ukraine

  • Accessible diagnosis and treatment in Ukraine make it possible to detect thyroid cancer at early stages.
  • Surgery costs considerably less in Ukraine than at clinics in Europe and the USA, and care follows international standards.
  • MediUkraine arranges a preliminary consultation at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod and guides you through all stages of treatment.

Rehabilitation and life after surgery

Recovery after thyroid surgery determines how you will feel in the future. In the first days your hormone levels are monitored: after removal of the gland or part of it, thyroid hormone replacement is needed. The doctor chooses an individual dose of levothyroxine and monitors TSH and free T4 levels with blood tests.

Physical rehabilitation starts with simple exercises for the neck and shoulders, which prevent stiffness of the soft tissues. For the first month after surgery, follow a gentle routine without heavy physical exertion. You then gradually return to your usual activity under medical supervision; some restrictions apply if you have had radioactive iodine therapy.

Then come scheduled follow-up visits: the doctor assesses your TSH level and checks the neck by ultrasound, adjusting the hormone dose if needed. MediUkraine agrees the rehabilitation schedule, keeps you in contact with the clinic's specialists and ensures continuity of care.

How the operation and further treatment work

Thyroid cancer surgery is the standard approach for most histological types of tumour. The extent of the operation depends on the stage, the size of the tumour and whether it has spread to the regional lymph nodes. Most often a thyroidectomy, complete removal of the thyroid gland, is performed; less often a subtotal resection, in which a small area of tissue is left.

During the operation the surgeon carefully examines the neck area to detect and remove affected lymph nodes. If needed, a selective or radical neck dissection is performed. The operation is carried out under general anaesthesia; a particular task for the team is to avoid damaging the recurrent laryngeal nerve and the parathyroid glands.

MediUkraine arranges treatment with an experienced surgical oncologist at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, organises pre-operative preparation and coordinates treatment at every stage.

Why is thyroid cancer surgery more affordable in Ukraine?

Why surgery costs less in Ukraine:

The procedure costs 40–60% less in Ukraine than at clinics in the USA, Germany and Switzerland. The difference comes from operating costs, the cost of materials and medical staff salaries. Ukrainian surgical oncologists follow international standards for the diagnosis and treatment of thyroid cancer.

Intraoperative monitoring of the laryngeal nerves and ultrasound improve the precision of surgery and reduce the risk of complications. The wait for surgery in Ukraine is 2–4 weeks, while in Western European countries it can reach 2–3 months.

The MediUkraine platform takes care of preparing documents and arranging a consultation with a surgical oncologist at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, without unnecessary intermediaries. This way preparation takes less time and treatment starts on time.

Is thyroid surgery safe?

The safety of thyroid cancer surgery is ensured by international protocols and the requirements of oncology practice. Intraoperative laryngeal nerve monitoring noticeably reduces the risk of post-operative complications. The stages of surgery are aligned with the standards of the American Thyroid Association and the European Thyroid Association.

The partner clinic holds a licence for cancer surgery.

The MediUkraine platform supports you from the initial consultation to post-operative follow-up. This approach takes the specifics of your case into account and lets you quickly clarify any clinical question.

Frequently asked questions

What is thyroid cancer surgery?

It is the main treatment for thyroid tumours: the surgeon removes the tumour together with any affected lymph nodes. The operation is performed under general anaesthesia, and its extent ranges from hemithyroidectomy (removal of one lobe) to thyroidectomy (removal of the whole gland).

How much does thyroid cancer surgery cost in Ukraine?

The operation in Ukraine costs from USD 601, and a comprehensive programme with consultations, diagnostics and post-operative care costs from USD 766. This is noticeably less than at clinics in Europe or Turkey.

When should I see a doctor?

See an endocrinologist or oncologist if you can feel lumps in your neck, find it hard to swallow, have a hoarse voice, enlarged lymph nodes or a feeling of pressure in the throat. The earlier a tumour is detected, the better the results of treatment.

How do I prepare for thyroid cancer surgery?

Before surgery you have an ultrasound, a CT or MRI of the neck, a fine-needle biopsy and blood tests. A few days before the operation, the doctor may advise a light diet and avoiding alcohol; medicines that affect blood clotting are paused only as agreed with the doctor who prescribed them. On the day of surgery you must not eat for 6–8 hours beforehand.

Can surgery be performed during pregnancy or with other medical conditions?

Yes, but the decision is made individually. In early pregnancy, surgery is usually postponed until after the birth unless the tumour is life-threatening. If you have other conditions, the endocrinologist adjusts the preparation to reduce the risks.

What are the indications for thyroid cancer surgery?

Surgery is performed for a malignant tumour confirmed by biopsy, for growing nodules that compress the organs of the neck, and for metastases in the lymph nodes.

Can thyroid cancer be cured completely?

The chance of a complete cure depends on the type of tumour, the stage of the disease at diagnosis and your condition. Papillary and follicular carcinomas are differentiated forms with a favourable prognosis: when detected at stage I–II, five-year survival is 90–99%. Surgery combined with hormone therapy and, where indicated, radioactive iodine gives effective control of the disease, and many patients achieve lasting remission. The final prognosis is assessed after the histology report.

Medullary and anaplastic carcinomas are more aggressive and require a more comprehensive approach. However, extended lymph node dissection and targeted therapy have noticeably improved results in these cases too. MediUkraine arranges treatment with a surgical oncologist at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod and access to the necessary diagnostic and treatment methods.
