Laser Prostate Surgery in Ukraine

An enlarged prostate (prostate adenoma) narrows the prostatic part of the urethra and gradually obstructs the outflow of urine. Laser enucleation removes this obstruction through the urethra, without incisions: erectile function is usually preserved, blood loss is minimal and recovery takes from a few days to a few weeks. In Ukraine these operations follow international protocols, with full anaesthetic support, infection control and post-operative monitoring. MediUkraine puts you in touch with a urologist at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, prepares a transparent cost estimate and guides you from consultation and tests to surgery, rehabilitation and follow-up examinations.

Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.

Laser removal of an enlarged prostate: how the operation is performed

During enucleation, the surgeon passes an endoscope through the urethra and uses a laser fibre to separate the hyperplastic tissue from the prostate capsule, rather like separating the flesh of a fruit from its peel. The separated lobes are pushed into the bladder, where they are broken up and removed. The procedure is considered for men with impaired urination, night-time urges or urinary retention, or when medication has stopped working.

Endoscopic access requires no incisions: blood loss is much lower, and the risk of urinary incontinence or erectile dysfunction is reduced. The hospital stay lasts from a few hours to 1 day, and a return to active life is possible within 1–2 weeks of the procedure. This makes it possible to prevent the complications of long-standing hyperplasia: acute urinary retention, repeated infections or impaired kidney function.

The holmium laser (HoLEP) removes the tissue that blocks the urethra without breaching the prostate capsule. The method is used for different volumes of hyperplasia, even in complex cases: the laser acts selectively, so bladder control and potency are usually preserved. If needed, the removed tissue is sent for histological examination.

An enlarged prostate is a common urological condition in men over 50. Timely treatment stops the symptoms from progressing and restores normal sleep, the ability to work and intimate life. Your next step is a urologist consultation with the results of an ultrasound scan and a PSA test: this is where the doctor decides whether surgery is needed now.

Coming to Uzhhorod for treatment: what to expect

Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.

Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.

Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.

Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.

Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

When an enlarged prostate needs surgery

Surgery is indicated when medication is ineffective and when symptoms affect sleep, erectile function, the ability to work or social life.
Sometimes monitoring or conservative treatment is enough, but with regular symptoms, urinary retention or reduced quality of life, laser removal is worth considering.

Preparing for surgery: examinations and tests

  1. The operation requires a preliminary examination and a clear treatment plan.
  2. Tell the doctor in advance about all the medicines you take: anticoagulants, blood pressure medication, statins, hormonal drugs or herbal supplements.
  3. It is also worth adjusting your lifestyle: stop smoking, cut down on alcohol, bring your haemoglobin level back to normal, avoid stress and get enough sleep.

Types and methods of laser surgery

Laser techniques remove excess prostate tissue with minimal intervention and a short recovery period. They suit patients of different ages, including men with coexisting conditions, because they reduce the risk of complications and blood loss.

One of the main techniques in Ukraine is HoLEP: holmium laser enucleation of the hyperplastic tissue, which is then removed through the bladder. This makes it possible to remove the obstructing tissue completely, restore urine outflow and preserve bladder function. HoLEP is indicated even for a significantly enlarged prostate, including volumes over 100 ml.

Another option is laser vaporisation of prostate tissue, performed through the urethra. It is less aggressive but also reduces the prostate volume and relieves symptoms. The procedure does not require a long hospital stay, so you return to your usual lifestyle quickly.

Laser treatment is also recommended for patients with a higher risk of bleeding or those who cannot tolerate general anaesthesia. In many cases it replaces open or transurethral procedures and gives better long-term results.

With the MediUkraine team you can have laser treatment of an enlarged prostate at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, following international protocols and performed by experienced surgeons. We help with the documents and organise every stage of treatment.

Advantages of laser enucleation

  • Laser enucleation of the prostate is a minimally invasive technique: the hyperplastic tissue is separated precisely, without incisions and with minimal interference with healthy structures.
  • Rapid restoration of urination.
  • Comfort and better quality of life.
  • A minimal rehabilitation period.

Recovery after surgery

Laser removal of an enlarged prostate involves not only a minimally invasive procedure but also a monitored recovery period. In the first days you may urinate frequently or feel discomfort or pressure; this is a normal reaction of the body to the laser procedure. Return to everyday activities gradually: avoid sitting for long periods and physical exertion for at least 7–10 days. Do not drive straight after the procedure, only once the doctor allows it.

How long recovery takes depends on your age, general health and the specifics of the operation. With office work you can go back within 5–7 days, while physically demanding work may require up to three weeks. The urologist gives the final recommendations on how quickly to return to normal life at the scheduled check-up.

Short daily walks are useful from the first days: they stimulate circulation and reduce the risk of complications. Avoid hot baths, saunas and swimming pools, sexual activity, alcohol and smoking until rehabilitation is complete. Be sure to drink enough fluids and follow the recommendations on diet and hygiene.

If you develop pain, a fever, difficulty urinating or blood in the urine, see a urologist immediately. MediUkraine stays in touch with the doctor and reminds you about follow-up examinations during recovery.

Effect on erectile and reproductive function

Laser enucleation relieves the symptoms of hyperplasia and usually preserves erection. For men planning to have children, an important point must be discussed in advance: after HoLEP, retrograde ejaculation is common, when semen passes into the bladder instead of out through the urethra, and this makes natural conception harder. The urologist explains how this risk compares with that of other methods.

The choice of procedure is always individual. The urologist may order additional tests, including a semen analysis, hormone tests and a testosterone level. If there is a risk to fertility, the doctor explains all the consequences and offers lower-risk options. When conception is planned soon, the operation is postponed, or sperm banking in advance is recommended.

Surgery is not needed by everyone, nor immediately. If symptoms are mild and fertility is a priority, conservative treatment with careful monitoring is possible. The decision is made after ultrasound, hormone tests and a conversation about your reproductive plans.

Why is laser prostate surgery in Ukraine good value?

Laser removal of an enlarged prostate in Ukraine combines European quality standards with an affordable cost. Patients from abroad choose Ukraine not only for the price of the operation but also for affordable accommodation, a short hospital stay and a clear treatment route, all within one medical centre.

Laser enucleation in Ukraine costs less than at clinics in the EU or Turkey. The reasons are simple: a much lower cost per bed-day, lower salaries and rent, and open competition between private clinics. In addition, HoLEP makes it possible to shorten the hospital stay to 1 day, and recovery is usually quick and uncomplicated.

At the same time, Ukrainian clinics follow international protocols. Doctors use laser systems, work in a sterile environment and provide full anaesthetic support and continuous monitoring. HoLEP is performed routinely by experienced urologists, and the predictability of the result comes from the volume of operations performed and control at every stage.

What makes laser treatment in Ukraine good value:

▪️ lower cost of clinical services compared with EU countries
▪️ well-equipped clinics and strong competition between private centres
▪️ a shorter hospital stay thanks to the minimally invasive nature of HoLEP
▪️ transparent pricing with no hidden costs

The MediUkraine team coordinates your treatment route with the partner clinic in Uzhhorod and prepares an individual cost estimate with no surprises. To get a quote, send your ultrasound results and PSA test, and we will calculate the cost of treatment based on them.

How safe is laser enucleation of the prostate?

Laser treatment of an enlarged prostate is an effective method with a low risk of complications that meets international standards. Private clinics perform HoLEP under sterile conditions, following protocols for anaesthetic support, infection control and post-operative monitoring.

HoLEP is performed routinely: it is minimally invasive, requires a short hospital stay and gives a predictable result. Urologists who specialise in laser enucleation perform these operations regularly, and precision comes from optical control, laser power settings and the surgeon's experience.

At the partner clinic in Uzhhorod you receive the full cycle of care, from diagnostics to rehabilitation, in one facility. This shortens your pathway, reduces costs and leaves more attention for the result.

To be confident in your choice of clinic, look at the number of procedures performed, the doctors' certificates, genuine reviews and a transparent cost estimate. MediUkraine works with a vetted partner clinic in Uzhhorod where HoLEP laser enucleation is performed regularly, and shows you the cost estimate before treatment begins.

Frequently asked questions

What is an enlarged prostate (prostate adenoma)?

Prostate adenoma (benign prostatic hyperplasia) is a gradual enlargement of the gland that makes urination difficult and leads to frequent urges, a weak urine stream or retention. Laser enucleation (HoLEP) is one of the main ways to relieve these symptoms.

How much does laser prostate surgery cost in Ukraine?

HoLEP in Ukraine costs noticeably less than at clinics in the EU or the USA, and the price usually includes the surgery, anaesthesia, a 1–2 day hospital stay and post-operative follow-up. The starting prices are shown in the table above; the final amount depends on the clinic and the scope of services.

Do I need a visa to visit Ukraine?

Citizens of many countries, including the EU, the UK, Canada, Israel, Switzerland and Turkey, do not need a visa for a short stay of up to 90 days. Check the rules for your country before you travel.

Am I suitable for prostate surgery?

Laser treatment is indicated for moderate or severe symptoms: frequent urination at night, urinary retention, a weak stream, recurrent infections. The final decision is made by the urologist after ultrasound, tests and an examination. HoLEP is suitable even for a large prostate or after previous operations.

What treatment methods are there for an enlarged prostate?

Besides HoLEP laser enucleation, TURP (transurethral resection), REZUM (water vapour therapy) and medication are used. HoLEP is considered the gold standard because the excess tissue is removed completely and with little trauma.

How long is the recovery period?

After HoLEP most patients return to their normal routine within 7–10 days; the hospital stay lasts 1–2 days. For 2–3 weeks, avoid physical exertion, sexual activity and saunas. Healing is gradual, but urination is noticeably easier straight away.

Does laser prostate surgery affect reproductive function?

HoLEP is a minimally invasive technique that usually does not affect erection. However, retrograde ejaculation is possible, meaning no semen is released at orgasm; it does not affect libido or general well-being. If you are planning to have children, discuss this with the urologist before the procedure.
