| Endoscopic treatment of acute ureteral obstruction | from USD 242 | from USD 4,500 | from USD 5,000 |
Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.
Endoscopic removal of ureteral stones is used when a stone does not pass on its own and blocks the flow of urine. The indications are stones of 5 mm or more, as well as obstruction or renal colic. It is not worth waiting in this situation: urine that builds up above the blockage gradually impairs kidney function. If an infection develops behind the blockage, urine drainage is restored and the infection treated first, and the stone is removed afterwards.
Access to the stone is provided by a ureteroscope, a thin optical instrument passed through the natural urinary passages, with no skin incisions and no injury to surrounding tissue. The procedure is performed with contact lithotripsy, in which the stone is broken up with a laser or a pneumatic lithotripter, or without it, in which case the stone is removed whole. The choice depends on its size, density and level.
Ureteroscope optics have high resolution, so the surgeon sees the operating field clearly and removes even small fragments. Rehabilitation is short, the risk of complications is low and effectiveness is high: most patients go home the next day. New stones form in the operated ureter within a year in fewer than 5% of cases.
MediUkraine arranges the operation at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, where it is performed with the appropriate equipment by an experienced team.
Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.
Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.
Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.
Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.
Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

Ukrainian clinics work to evidence-based protocols: urinary tract obstruction is relieved endoscopically, which removes pain, restores normal urine flow and returns you to everyday life without lengthy rehabilitation. High-resolution optics and low-trauma laser technology allow most procedures to be done as an outpatient, with minimal discomfort, for patients of any age.
The main technique is ureteroscopy with laser lithotripsy: through the natural passages the stone is broken up completely and the fragments removed, with no incisions. If needed, a stent is placed to keep urine flowing freely for a time and help the lining heal. In more complex cases flexible ureteroscopy, combined endoscopic procedures or additional methods are used to clear the ureter completely and prevent a new blockage.
This approach reduces the risk of injury to the ureteral wall and remains effective even for dense or impacted stones, the ones that do not move on their own. The urologist chooses the technique based on the CT scan: the density, size and level of the stone and the condition of the lining around it all matter.
Recovery after an endoscopic procedure is usually quick and uneventful. On the first day there may be ureteral spasms and discomfort when passing urine; these go within 2–3 days. Increase your fluid intake to 2–3 litres a day to flush the urinary tract and prevent new stones from forming. Light physical activity is allowed after 3–5 days, and a full return to your usual routine after 1–2 weeks.
Medication includes antibiotics for 5–7 days to prevent infection. MediUkraine coordinates follow-up with a urologist, who monitors the urinary tract and orders an ultrasound check if needed. Tell the doctor straight away about any signs of infection, such as fever, pain when passing urine or blood in the urine.
To reduce the risk of recurrence, the stone or its fragments are sent for composition analysis: based on the result, the urologist adjusts your diet and treats any metabolic disorders. Patients with secondary stone disease are given a separate schedule of follow-up visits with the urologist.
Endoscopic removal of ureteral stones is performed under general anaesthesia. The instrument is a ureteroscope, a thin endoscope with a camera and working channels. It is passed along the natural route, through the urethra and bladder, straight to where the stone is lodged, so no skin incisions are made.
The doctor sees the stone on a monitor and removes it in one of several ways: extracts it with a special basket, breaks it with contact disintegration, or fragments it with a laser or ultrasound. Small fragments pass on their own or are flushed out of the ureter during the procedure. If needed, a temporary ureteral stent is placed to prevent swelling and keep urine flowing normally.
The method is 95–98% effective, the hospital stay is short and often outpatient, the risk of complications is low and recovery is quick. Patients return to their usual activities within a few days, and a temporary stent, if one was placed, is removed later. MediUkraine will arrange this procedure at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, which has the necessary equipment and experienced specialists.
Endoscopic removal of ureteral stones is a minimally invasive urological procedure with clear advantages over open surgery. In Ukraine it costs 40–60% less than at European and American clinics, with the same standards of quality and safety.
The price difference is explained by lower operating costs and cheaper premises and medical infrastructure, not by savings on sterility, staff qualifications or the quality of materials.
MediUkraine organises treatment for international patients at the vetted partner clinic in Uzhhorod: coordination and support from the first consultation to the end of rehabilitation. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English. Your next step is to send your existing test results so that the coordinator can agree a date with the clinic.
The safety of the procedure depends on preparation and technique. Diagnostic tests before the operation are essential (ultrasound, CT, urography), as they give the exact location of the stone. Anaesthesia follows international protocols, and vital signs are monitored throughout the operation. The urologist's experience and correctly chosen instruments reduce the risk of complications such as perforation of the ureter or serious bleeding.
Operating theatres work under sterile conditions, which reduces the risk of infection. Before and after the operation you are under the care of an anaesthetist, and blood tests and a coagulation panel are mandatory.
The MediUkraine team arranges treatment at the vetted partner clinic in Uzhhorod, where compliance with safety and quality standards in the treatment of ureteral stones is ensured by internal checks at every stage.

📍 Uzhhorod, Ukraine
A multidisciplinary hospital in Uzhhorod, part of a network of medical facilities in western Ukraine: an outpatient clinic, a surgical centre covering 15 specialties and a 30-bed inpatient unit. Its 52 doctors include professors and PhDs; many operations are done as day surgery, with discharge after 1–2 days.
It is a minimally invasive urological procedure: the doctor passes a thin endoscope through the natural passages into the ureter, finds the stone, breaks it up with a laser and removes the fragments, with no incisions. This clears the blockage in the ureter, restores the flow of urine, relieves pain and prevents damage to the kidney. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia, and the skin is not cut.
In Ukraine it is significantly cheaper than in the EU or Turkey. The price is affected by how difficult access is, the size of the stone, whether laser lithotripsy is needed, stent placement and the extent of post-operative follow-up. You receive the quote in advance, with no hidden charges.
In most cases patients from Europe, the Middle East and many other regions can enter without a visa for a set period. Check the current entry rules for your country before travelling.
The method suits almost all patients with ureteral stones of 5 mm or more, and also those with obstruction, pain or renal colic; if there is an infection, it is treated first. Contraindications are rare. Before the operation you have an ultrasound, CT or X-ray and blood and urine tests to assess your condition and choose the best access.
Endourological techniques available in Ukraine include:
— ureteroscopy (rigid and flexible),
— laser lithotripsy,
— contact stone fragmentation,
— removal of fragments with baskets,
— stent placement or replacement if needed.
All stages are monitored with a video system and X-ray.
Most patients return to an active life within 1–3 days. Full recovery takes up to 1–2 weeks, depending on how complex the removal was and whether a stent was placed. Pain is usually mild, and complications are rare.
No. Endoscopic stone removal does not impair reproductive function or affect potency. The method does not involve the genital organs and carries no risks to hormonal or sexual health. On the contrary, clearing the obstruction and chronic inflammation improves your general condition and comfort.
