Breast Reduction (Reduction Mammoplasty) in Ukraine

Breast reduction, or reduction mammoplasty, is plastic surgery in which the surgeon removes excess fat and glandular tissue, lifts the skin and moves the areola to a natural position. It is done not only for aesthetic reasons: very large breasts cause back and neck pain, poor posture, skin irritation and chafing under the breasts. After the operation the breasts become lighter, more symmetrical and in proportion with the figure, and the load on the spine is reduced. The operation takes 2–4 hours under general anaesthesia, and patients return to their normal routine after about 2–4 weeks. MediUkraine lists the prices for this operation at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod and puts you in touch with its plastic surgeons.

Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.

Who reduction mammoplasty is for

The operation is performed for women with macromastia, an excessive growth of glandular and fat tissue that makes the breasts overload the spine. The typical picture is back and neck pain, bra strap marks on the shoulders, breathing problems, dermatitis under the breasts and orthopaedic problems. The second reason is aesthetic: the wish to reduce visible volume for a more proportionate figure. Before the operation the patient has a breast ultrasound, a mammogram and a consultation with an anaesthetist.

Reduction mammoplasty removes excess glandular tissue, fat and skin and returns the areola to its anatomically correct position. The surgeon performs the operation so as to preserve nipple sensation and the ability to breastfeed, while making the breasts themselves proportionate to the figure.

The incision technique is chosen according to the volume of tissue to be removed and the patient's anatomy; the anchor technique and vertical reduction are used most often. The operation takes 2–4 hours under general anaesthesia. The final shape becomes visible after about 2–3 months, once the swelling has subsided.

For the first 2–3 weeks physical exertion is limited and a compression bra is worn. The MediUkraine platform helps you find an experienced surgeon and a treatment plan that suit your needs and budget.

Coming to Uzhhorod for treatment: what to expect

Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.

Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.

Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.

Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.

Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

What to consider when choosing a clinic and surgeon

Price without loss of quality: the operation costs 40–60% less in Ukraine than in Western Europe and North America, with comparable medical standards.
Surgeon's experience and a personalised approach: Ukrainian plastic surgeons regularly update their skills.
Comprehensive support through MediUkraine: the platform guides you through every stage, from choosing a surgeon to post-operative monitoring.

Preparing for surgery

  1. Preparation for reduction mammoplasty rests on a few conditions that determine how the operation goes and the risk of complications.
  2. A week before the operation, aspirin, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and anticoagulants are stopped, but only as agreed with the doctor who prescribed them.
  3. The MediUkraine team will put you in touch with the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, which takes care of preparing for and performing the operation.

Surgical techniques

The volume of the breast is reduced and its shape corrected at the same time, so the technique is chosen individually. The choice depends on the degree of hypertrophy, skin elasticity, the position of the nipple and the patient's anatomy.

The vertical technique (Lejour method) is used most often. The incision runs around the nipple and vertically down to the inframammary fold: through it, excess tissue is removed and the nipple is moved to a natural position. For most patients this approach gives a good aesthetic result and leaves less noticeable scars.

The anchor technique is used for significant sagging and very large breasts. The incision is anchor-shaped, with an additional horizontal line under the breast, which makes it possible to remove more tissue and hold the result more securely. The scars are more noticeable, but for pronounced deformities this method remains the best option.

The MediUkraine team will help you find an experienced surgeon who will determine the right technique for your case at an in-person examination, explain where the incisions will be and assess the risk of complications.

Benefits of the operation for health and appearance

  • The operation relieves functional problems: back and neck pain, difficulty breathing and dermatitis under the breasts.
  • Ukraine has developed a competitive offering in reconstructive surgery.
  • MediUkraine takes care of the organisational side: finding the right specialist, coordinating with the clinic, additional consultations and insurance questions.

Recovery after surgery

Recovery after reduction mammoplasty takes 4–6 weeks, which is how long the tissues need to heal. For the first 3–5 days there is noticeable pain and swelling, which are relieved with prescribed painkillers. It is important to follow the surgeon's instructions on caring for the stitches and to wear a compression bra around the clock for the first month.

In the second or third week most patients return to light household tasks and desk work. Sport and heavy physical work are resumed gradually, no earlier than weeks 6–8 after the operation. Compression garments are worn for 4 to 6 weeks, depending on the doctor's instructions and how quickly you heal.

The pace of recovery depends on your body and the scope of the operation. MediUkraine puts you in touch with experienced surgeons who explain the course of rehabilitation in detail and provide post-operative follow-up: scheduled check-ups, removal of stitches and assessment of breast shape. At such a check-up, ask when you can stop wearing compression garments and how to care for your scars.

A natural look after the operation

The surgeon's task is not simply to remove volume but to preserve the natural appearance of the breasts. During the operation excess glandular tissue, fat and skin are removed, and the nipple-areola complex is repositioned so that the contour and sensation remain natural. The reason for surgery may be hypertrophy that causes physical discomfort, back and neck pain, poor posture or psychological distress; breast size is matched to the patient's build.

The operation is performed under general anaesthesia. Incisions are made around the areola, then vertically down and horizontally under the breast fold. The surgeon removes glandular tissue and corrects the position of the nipple and areola, creating a natural contour. It takes 2–4 hours, depending on the scope of work and the patient's anatomy.

The MediUkraine team will help you find a highly qualified plastic surgeon, arrange a consultation and support you throughout treatment.

Why is breast reduction more affordable in Ukraine?

Reduction mammoplasty in Ukraine costs noticeably less than at European and North American clinics: in the USA, Canada and Western Europe the same operation costs USD 8–15 thousand. The difference is explained by the lower cost of medical staff, premises and materials, while high standards of medical care are maintained.

Ukrainian plastic surgeons have specialist qualifications and experience in these operations and use modern surgical techniques. Clinics are equipped with the appropriate medical equipment, comply with international sanitary and hygiene standards and follow patient safety protocols close to those used abroad.

MediUkraine puts you in touch with the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, helps you agree the date of the operation and get support at every stage of treatment. Through the platform you get access to quality medical care at a reasonable price.

Is this operation safe?

Generally, yes. The operation is performed according to international plastic surgery protocols. The surgeon uses well-established techniques and precision instruments: excess tissue is removed carefully, without unnecessary incisions or coarse scars, and the proportions are shaped to suit the body. This reduces the risk of complications and helps achieve a natural aesthetic result.

The operation is managed by experienced plastic surgeons who choose the technique to suit the individual patient. It is performed under general anaesthesia in comfortable conditions. A personalised approach makes the result more predictable, with a symmetrical shape and the expected appearance of the breasts. The surgeon discusses possible risks and limitations before the operation: this is part of the patient's informed consent.

Ukrainian clinics observe strict sterility standards and monitor the patient's condition during and after the operation. Doctors give clear advice on recovery, caring for the stitches and wearing compression garments. You can usually return to your normal routine after 10–14 days.

Frequently asked questions

What is breast reduction (reduction mammoplasty)?

It is plastic surgery that removes excess fat, glandular tissue and skin to reduce the volume of the breasts and improve their shape. The areola is moved to a natural position at the same time. As the volume decreases, so does the load on the back, neck and shoulders, and the silhouette becomes more proportionate.

How much does breast reduction cost in Ukraine?

Prices at Ukrainian clinics start at USD 1,320, which is noticeably less than in Europe or Turkey. The final amount depends on the scope of the operation, the type of anaesthesia, the surgeon's experience and the conditions of your stay at the clinic. It usually includes the consultation, tests, anaesthesia, post-operative monitoring and compression garments.

When should I see a doctor?

It is worth booking an appointment with a plastic surgeon if large breasts cause you physical discomfort: pain in the back, neck or shoulders, skin irritation under the breasts, difficulty finding clothes that fit, or a psychological burden. A consultation is also appropriate when the breasts have lost their shape after pregnancy, breastfeeding or a sharp change in weight.

How do I prepare for breast reduction?

First comes a consultation with the surgeon, at which your expectations, the extent of the correction and the shape of your future breasts are discussed. You then have tests: blood tests, an ECG, and a mammogram or ultrasound. For a few days before the operation, avoid alcohol, smoking and, as agreed with the doctor who prescribed them, medicines that affect blood clotting. On the day of surgery the surgeon marks the breasts for precise shaping.

Can breast reduction be done during pregnancy or with other medical conditions?

No. The operation is not performed during pregnancy or breastfeeding, or when there is acute inflammation. Uncontrolled endocrine disorders, blood clotting problems and serious cardiovascular disease are also contraindications. The final decision is made by the doctor after an examination.

How long is recovery after breast reduction?

The recovery period after reduction mammoplasty is usually 2–4 weeks, which is how long it takes to return to normal activity. During the first week the patient wears a special compression bra that supports the breasts and reduces swelling. During this time movement is limited, especially lifting heavy objects. Pain and minor bruising pass within 7–10 days. Stitches are removed around days 10–14, depending on the surgeon's instructions.

Full healing of the scars and recovery of breast sensation can take 3–6 months. Sport and intensive exercise are resumed gradually, usually 4–6 weeks after the operation. The result stabilises within six months, once the swelling has completely subsided. Following the surgeon's advice on aftercare, hygiene and limiting activity noticeably shortens this period. The MediUkraine team will help you choose an experienced specialist who will draw up an individual recovery plan for you.

Can surgery be avoided?

Breast volume cannot be noticeably reduced without surgery: conservative methods relieve symptoms but do not change the amount of glandular tissue. The operation removes the cause of the hypertrophy itself and gives a stable, long-lasting result. The surgeon removes excess glandular and fat tissue, moves the nipple and areola to an anatomically correct position, and lifts and reshapes the skin. So you get not only a smaller volume but also an improved shape and contour for many years.

At the same time, the result depends on the quality of the surgery and on how closely you follow the recommendations during rehabilitation. Natural skin ageing and gravity do not go away, but the removed tissue does not grow back and the previous volume does not return. MediUkraine will help you find a surgeon experienced in reduction operations and book an in-person consultation, where the surgeon will assess how much tissue needs to be removed in your case.
