Breast Biopsy in Ukraine

A breast biopsy is the removal of a small sample of breast tissue for histology, which shows whether a lump is benign or malignant. It is ordered when an ultrasound or mammogram has found a lump, a firm area or another change in structure that needs clarifying. The sample is taken under ultrasound guidance and local anaesthetic, as an outpatient: the procedure takes 20–40 minutes, and no hospital stay is needed. Depending on the size and position of the lump, the doctor chooses a fine-needle, core or vacuum-assisted technique, and if needed the sample is also examined with immunohistochemistry. MediUkraine arranges the biopsy with a breast specialist at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, agrees a cost estimate with no hidden charges and supports you from the consultation to receiving the pathologist's report.

Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.

About breast biopsy

Histology shows what cannot be seen on ultrasound or mammography: the structure of the tissue, the arrangement and appearance of the cells and signs of atypia. It is by these features that the pathologist distinguishes a fibroadenoma or cyst from a malignant process and makes the diagnosis on which the breast specialist relies. A referral is given to women in whom imaging has found a lump, a firm area or a zone of altered structure, and to those being monitored after treatment.

The type of procedure, fine-needle, core or vacuum-assisted, is chosen by the doctor after the consultation and ultrasound. All three are performed through a puncture under local anaesthetic, without admission, and you return to your usual routine within a few days. Ultrasound guidance makes it possible to reach even small or deep lumps, so there is enough tissue for a reliable result.

Technically, it works like this: under ultrasound guidance the doctor guides a fine needle or a special instrument to the suspicious area and takes a core of tissue or a cell sample. This takes about 20–40 minutes and leaves barely any mark on the skin. If needed, the sample is also examined with immunohistochemistry to clarify the cell type, on which the treatment plan depends.

The next step is the histology report; how long it takes depends on the laboratory and the scope of the tests. With the result, you return to the breast specialist, who either recommends monitoring or draws up a treatment plan. It is at this stage that it becomes clear whether any procedure is needed at all: early diagnosis more often ends in monitoring than in surgery.

Coming to Uzhhorod for treatment: what to expect

Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.

Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.

Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.

Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.

Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

When a breast biopsy is ordered

The reason for the test is a change that is visible on ultrasound or mammography but cannot be assessed from the image alone: a lump, a firm area, a cyst with atypical contents or an area of altered tissue structure.
A referral is also given for nipple discharge, asymmetry or thickening of an area of the breast, and suspected fibrocystic changes or benign tumours.
The procedure is performed under local anaesthetic, without admission.
MediUkraine arranges the biopsy at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod and sets out the sequence of steps: a breast specialist consultation, ultrasound or mammography, taking the sample, and histology.

How to prepare for a biopsy

  1. Preparation for the procedure is minimal but necessary.
  2. Tell the doctor about all the medicines you take: anticoagulants, blood pressure medicines, hormonal medicines and herbal supplements.
  3. A practical detail that makes the day easier: wear clothing that gives easy access to the breast.
  4. The MediUkraine team agrees the list of necessary tests with the partner clinic and plans the day so that the consultation, taking the sample and sending it to the laboratory happen without delays.

Types of biopsy: fine-needle, core and vacuum-assisted

The method is chosen individually, taking into account the size of the lump, its location, its structure and the results of previous tests, ultrasound or mammography. The doctor's task is to obtain a tissue sample suitable for analysis with minimal discomfort for you. Three options are used most often: fine-needle aspiration biopsy, core needle biopsy and vacuum-assisted biopsy (VABB).

Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNA) is the least invasive option: the doctor uses a fine needle to collect a small number of cells for cytology. Taking the sample takes up to 20 minutes, is done under ultrasound guidance and is barely felt.

Core needle biopsy is performed with a special hollow needle that removes cylindrical cores of tissue, which are then examined by histology. This determines the nature of the tumour even when it lies deep. The diagnostic accuracy of this type of sampling is high.

Vacuum-assisted biopsy (VABB) obtains several tissue samples through a single puncture. It is performed as an outpatient under local anaesthetic, usually without stitches and leaving barely any scar. This option is often chosen for small lumps or to remove a benign tumour without open surgery.

In complex cases or when cancer is suspected, an MRI-guided biopsy is ordered, mainly when the lump cannot be seen on ultrasound. Overall, a breast biopsy in Ukraine today is an outpatient procedure lasting a few dozen minutes, after which the doctor has enough tissue to choose the course of treatment.

Advantages of the method for patients

  • Minimally invasive tissue sampling detects or rules out cancer in good time, and its aim is a reliable result without unnecessary intervention.
  • In practice it comes down to this: instead of waiting and repeat ultrasounds, you get a document with a definite answer about the nature of the lump, and take it to the breast specialist to agree a plan.

Recovery after the procedure

Recovery after a biopsy is short. In the first hours you may feel mild discomfort or tenderness at the puncture site; this is an expected tissue reaction. Most patients return to their usual routine the same day, but follow the doctor's advice for the first days carefully.

For 1–2 days avoid physical strain, pressure on the breast and sudden arm movements. Do not get the dressing or sterile plaster wet until the doctor allows it. You can drive and return to your normal activities the next day if there is no pain or tenderness.

During this period it is more comfortable to wear soft underwear that supports the breasts without compressing them. Saunas, swimming pools and hot baths will have to wait. If needed, the doctor prescribes mild painkillers or cold compresses.

Severe pain, redness, swelling or a raised temperature are reasons to contact the clinic immediately for a check-up. With proper care and MediUkraine's support, most patients recover without complications within a few days and receive their results in the same period.

Breast biopsy and women's health

If you are planning a pregnancy or breastfeeding, it is important not only to get a diagnosis but also to preserve the function of the breasts. Fine-needle, core and vacuum-assisted techniques are performed gently, with minimal damage to the surrounding tissue, and usually do not prevent breastfeeding later. Taking a sample also does not usually affect hormonal balance.

The best type of test is chosen individually. Beforehand the doctor may recommend an ultrasound, mammogram or hormone tests to locate the lump more precisely. If changes are found in a woman of childbearing age, the breast specialist agrees the details separately so as not to affect the menstrual cycle or breastfeeding. Tell the doctor about breastfeeding at the consultation.

A suspected abnormality does not yet mean surgery. In most cases a breast biopsy establishes a diagnosis after which treatment turns out to be gentle, and sometimes none is needed at all: monitoring with a follow-up ultrasound at an interval set by the doctor is enough.

Why is a breast biopsy more affordable in Ukraine?

When planning a breast biopsy, count not only the procedure itself but also the related costs: the breast specialist consultation, tests, histology and follow-up after the procedure. In Ukraine the total is also lower because all stages, from diagnosis to result, often take place in one centre and without admission.

Several factors affect the price. First, the cost of medical services (rent, materials, laboratory work, staff pay) is considerably lower than in the EU or Turkey. Second, competition between private clinics encourages transparent service packages with no hidden charges. Third, minimally invasive techniques need no long recovery and therefore no extra days in the clinic.

At the same time, the lower price does not come at the expense of safety: clinics maintain sterility and infection control and ensure proper laboratory analysis. The sample is taken by experienced breast specialists under ultrasound guidance, which means precisely targeting the right area rather than working by touch, so the accuracy of the result is maintained at every stage.

Is a breast biopsy safe?

The risks are low. Private clinics in Ukraine provide sterility, full anaesthetic care and monitoring after the procedure. The tissue is taken in a minimally invasive way, under ultrasound or mammography guidance, with single-use sterile instruments. A breast biopsy takes 20–40 minutes and usually has a predictable course.

The clinics' diagnostic equipment is designed for targeted sampling, and the report is prepared by breast specialists and cytologists experienced in this particular field, which affects both the accuracy of the result and your comfort. Thanks to the minimally invasive approach, no hospital stay is needed, and you can return to normal life the same day.

When choosing a clinic, look at the doctor's experience, the number of procedures performed, the standard of the laboratory and how transparent the cost estimate is. MediUkraine works with a vetted partner clinic in Uzhhorod and tells you about these points before you book.

Frequently asked questions

What is a breast biopsy?

It is a diagnostic procedure: the doctor takes a small sample of breast tissue and sends it to the laboratory. Histology shows whether the lump is benign or malignant, and the next step, monitoring or treatment, depends on this.

How much does a breast biopsy cost in Ukraine?

The price depends on the type of procedure: fine-needle, core or vacuum-assisted. On average it is from USD 49, which is more affordable than in the EU or Turkey. The amount usually includes a breast specialist consultation, the procedure itself and histology; check what is included with the clinic in advance.

Is any preparation needed before a breast biopsy?

Yes. First the doctor orders an ultrasound or mammogram to pinpoint the location of the lump. Medicines that affect blood clotting may need to be paused a few days before the procedure, but only as agreed with the doctor who prescribed them, and on the day of the procedure do not use creams or deodorants.

What types of breast biopsy are there?

Three main methods are used:
– Fine-needle aspiration biopsy (FNA): cells are collected through a fine needle;
– Core needle biopsy: a cylinder of tissue is taken for histology;
– Vacuum-assisted biopsy (VABB): several tissue samples through a single puncture.

Is a breast biopsy painful?

Under local anaesthetic, taking the sample is painless. Afterwards you may feel pressure or tenderness at the puncture site, which passes quickly.

How long do the procedure and recovery take?

The procedure itself takes 20–40 minutes. No hospital stay is needed, and you go home the same day. Recovery usually takes 1–2 days, after which you can return to your usual routine.

How accurate are breast biopsy results?

The accuracy of modern methods exceeds 98%. The tissue sample is assessed under a microscope by a pathologist, who determines its cell composition and the nature of the lump.
