Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.
The aim of treatment is to remove the factor that triggered the inflammation, preserve working kidney tissue and prevent chronic kidney failure. Both the treatment plan and its length depend on whether the process is acute or already chronic and how much filtration has been affected. That is why the first step in the plan is not prescribing a medicine but finding the cause.
The cause is dealt with directly: the medicines that triggered the inflammation are stopped, an infection is treated or a systemic disease is brought under control. When the cause is allergic, corticosteroids are prescribed; in the early stages they can speed up the resolution of the inflammation.
If autoimmune mechanisms are involved, nephrologists add immunosuppressive treatment. At the same time, blood pressure, protein metabolism and electrolyte balance are corrected. Effectiveness is assessed by changes in creatinine, urea and the glomerular filtration rate, which are checked throughout the course.
MediUkraine will arrange a nephrologist consultation at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, where the doctor assesses your condition and advises where and how to continue treatment according to the principles of evidence-based medicine.
Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.
Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.
Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.
Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.
Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

The treatment plan is chosen according to the cause and stage of the disease. Treatment of the cause means removing what is damaging the kidneys: stopping nephrotoxic medicines and treating the underlying disease or infection. In drug-induced nephritis this is a critical step: often stopping the medicine alone is enough for the inflammation to start subsiding.
With active inflammation and rapid progression, immunosuppressive treatment is added. First-line medicines are corticosteroids, mainly prednisolone at doses of 0.5–1 mg/kg/day. If they do not work or the patient cannot tolerate them, other immunosuppressants are added, such as azathioprine or mycophenolate mofetil. This approach is justified mainly in autoimmune and systemic forms of the disease.
Supportive treatment means controlling blood pressure and correcting high blood lipids and the build-up of nitrogenous waste products. Kidney protection is provided by angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin II receptor antagonists. The MediUkraine team helps find a certified clinic where all three components are available.
Recovery after treatment determines whether kidney function is maintained and whether the disease comes back. In the first month after drug treatment ends, blood pressure is kept under strict control and urine and blood tests are done regularly to check creatinine levels and the filtration rate.
Dietary restrictions apply throughout the rehabilitation period: sodium up to 2–3 grams a day, protein within the limits set by the nephrologist, and fluid intake is counted separately. Physical activity is resumed gradually and under medical supervision: first gentle walks, later your usual activity.
MediUkraine draws up a rehabilitation plan together with the doctors and keeps the sequence of check-ups on track: the plan records which medicines you received during the course and the dates of your next tests. In the first year you see the nephrologist every 3 months; these check-ups are where complications are detected in time and treatment is adjusted.
Inflammation of the connective tissue and cellular elements of the kidney hits its filtering capacity first of all, and the doctor's main task is to preserve it. Triggers include side effects of medicines, infections, autoimmune reactions or exposure to toxic substances, so the investigation starts with blood and urine tests and a kidney ultrasound, with a biopsy added in complex cases.
After that, everything depends on the cause and stage. In the early stages it is enough to remove the cause (stop the medicine, clear the source of infection) and, if needed, prescribe corticosteroids. When the disease progresses quickly, corticosteroids and immunosuppressive medicines are added: they reduce inflammation and slow the loss of kidney function.
MediUkraine arranges a nephrologist consultation at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, where the doctor advises where and how to continue treatment and long-term follow-up.
Interstitial nephritis treatment costs less at Ukrainian clinics mainly because of lower running costs and medical staff salaries compared with European and American centres. With comparable nephrologist qualifications and equipment, a course of treatment in Ukraine usually costs less than similar treatment in Western Europe. Kidney ultrasound, kidney biopsy and laboratory tests are done without the premium for a clinic's brand that makes up a noticeable part of the bill abroad.
Ukrainian nephrology departments have experience in managing drug-induced and immune-mediated interstitial nephritis: they use immunosuppressive regimens based on corticosteroids and other immunosuppressants, followed by monitoring of kidney function. The inpatient stage with specialist supervision usually lasts 10–14 days, and the total cost is manageable for most patients.
MediUkraine guides international patients through the whole pathway, from the first nephrologist consultation to checking the results of treatment, helps you get an estimate before you travel and agrees the details with the clinic without hidden fees.
Interstitial nephritis treatment at Ukrainian clinics follows international diagnostic and treatment guidelines. The diagnosis is confirmed with ultrasound, computed tomography and, if necessary, a kidney biopsy. The more precisely the cause of the inflammation is established, the fewer unnecessary medicines you receive.
Patient safety is ensured by monitoring: checking kidney function, measuring blood pressure and watching for side effects of medication. Specialised clinics have laboratory facilities for regular blood and urine tests, which is a prerequisite during a course of corticosteroids and immunosuppressants.
Facilities work according to national standards of medical care. MediUkraine agrees the arrangements with the clinic and helps you get an estimate before you travel.

📍 Uzhhorod, Ukraine
A multidisciplinary hospital in Uzhhorod, part of a network of medical facilities in western Ukraine: an outpatient clinic, a surgical centre covering 15 specialties and a 30-bed inpatient unit. Its 52 doctors include professors and PhDs; many operations are done as day surgery, with discharge after 1–2 days.
Interstitial nephritis is an inflammatory kidney disease that affects the interstitial (connective) tissue and the tubules. The filtering system stops working properly: swelling appears, urine test results change, and blood pressure and blood creatinine rise. Without timely treatment, the process becomes chronic.
The price depends on the form of the disease, the range of diagnostics and the length of monitoring. The first step is a nephrologist consultation at the partner clinic, from USD 20. The doctor sets out the treatment plan and its cost after the examination, and MediUkraine helps you get an estimate before you travel.
See a nephrologist if you have swelling, raised blood pressure, lower back pain, a change in urine colour or general weakness. The earlier the diagnosis, the lower the risk of complications and the better the chance of restoring kidney function.
Before seeing the doctor, it is advisable to have blood and urine tests, limit salty food and stop nephrotoxic medicines, but only as agreed with the doctor who prescribed them. This makes the results more accurate and the treatment plan better grounded.
Yes, treatment is possible, but it must be prescribed only by a doctor. For pregnant women, medicines are chosen that are considered safe for the baby, and with other conditions (diabetes, hypertension) the plan is agreed with the relevant specialists.
The length of recovery from interstitial nephritis depends on the form of the disease and how promptly treatment was started. In the acute form caused by medicines or infection, the first signs of improvement appear within 2–4 weeks of removing the cause and starting appropriate treatment. However, full recovery of kidney function can take 3 to 6 months, and in some patients regeneration takes up to a year.
In the chronic form, recovery takes much longer: kidney function usually stabilises within 6–12 months of monitoring and treatment. Timescales are individual: they depend on the degree of damage to the kidney parenchyma, the presence of fibrosis and other conditions. The MediUkraine team will help find a specialised clinic where specialists will draw up a personalised treatment plan with a realistic outlook for your case.
The outlook depends on the form and stage of the disease. Acute interstitial nephritis caused by medicines or infection responds well to timely treatment. In most patients kidney function recovers fully or almost fully within a few weeks of removing the cause and appropriate treatment.
The chronic form requires long-term monitoring, and treatment aims to slow progression. Full recovery of kidney function is possible in the early stages, but once fibrosis and sclerosis of the parenchyma develop, the changes often cannot be reversed. Early diagnosis, precise identification of the cause and comprehensive treatment noticeably improve the outcome. MediUkraine helps find clinics and nephrologists who carry out the examination and develop an individual treatment plan to preserve as much kidney function as possible.
