Leukaemia Treatment in Ukraine

Leukaemia is a malignant disease of the blood-forming system in which the bone marrow starts producing immature abnormal cells instead of healthy blood cells. Treatment follows international protocols, and the specific regimen is tailored to the patient, taking into account the type of leukaemia, the stage of the disease and general health. A haemato-oncologist reviews the test results, determines the form of the disease and prescribes chemotherapy, targeted therapy, immunotherapy or haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The aim of treatment is to bring the disease into remission and keep it under control.

Cost of leukaemia treatment in Ukraine

Service🇺🇦 Ukraine🇨🇿 Czech Republic🇹🇷 Turkey
Haematologist consultationfrom USD 20——

Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.

What is leukaemia and how is treatment chosen?

The division into acute and chronic forms shapes the whole treatment strategy. Acute leukaemias develop quickly and need intensive treatment to start immediately; chronic leukaemias progress more slowly, and long-term control of the disease comes first. The list of suitable regimens is then narrowed down by the patient's age, cytogenetic results and state of health, and it is on this basis that the haemato-oncologist chooses between chemotherapy, targeted therapy or immunotherapy, and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

The first line is combination chemotherapy, which aims to bring the disease into remission; it is followed by consolidation cycles that reinforce the result. In acute leukaemias, molecular testing is critical: the mutations found affect both the prognosis and whether a targeted medicine will work. Chronic forms are more often managed with targeted medicines, which act selectively on abnormal cells.

Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation opens the way to long-term remission and potential recovery, above all in younger patients in high-risk groups.

MediUkraine arranges a haematologist consultation at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, where the doctor advises where and how to continue treatment, and supports you at every stage.

Coming to Uzhhorod for treatment: what to expect

Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.

Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.

Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.

Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.

Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

Protocols used by haematologists

The chemotherapy, targeted therapy and immunotherapy regimens are based on international protocols.
A course of treatment in Ukraine is usually more affordable than the European or American equivalent, and for long-term treatment this difference is decisive.
Contacting a haematologist through MediUkraine means a personalised approach and timely advice on where to have diagnosis with the right equipment; how quickly it is done determines when specific treatment can begin.

Preparing for treatment

  1. The tests before treatment starts have to answer three questions: what type of leukaemia it is, how far it has spread and whether the body can cope with the planned treatment.
  2. Next, the function of the internal organs is assessed: an abdominal ultrasound, a chest CT scan, an electrocardiogram and an echocardiogram.
  3. Patients are also advised to see a cardiologist and, if they have other conditions, the relevant specialists.

Treatment methods: chemotherapy, HSCT, targeted medicines

Chemotherapy remains the basis of treatment. It is the systemic administration of cytostatic medicines that destroy malignant blood cells. Depending on the type of disease (acute or chronic, lymphoblastic or myeloid), different combination chemotherapy regimens are used. The intensity and length of the course are determined by the patient's age, cytogenetic results and general state of health.

Haematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT) is a potentially curative method for patients at high risk of relapse or with refractory disease. The procedure replaces the diseased bone marrow with healthy stem cells, either from a donor (allogeneic) or the patient's own (autologous). It is performed at specialised haemato-oncology centres.

Targeted therapy and immunotherapy are a separate area, used above all for chronic myeloid leukaemia and some forms of acute leukaemia. Monoclonal antibodies and tyrosine kinase inhibitors target specific mutations and abnormal molecules. MediUkraine helps you access these protocols by handling communication and administrative arrangements with the clinic.

Benefits of treatment in Ukraine

  • Treatment in Ukraine combines international protocols with an affordable cost.
  • A course of chemotherapy and targeted therapy in Ukraine is usually more affordable than in Western Europe and the USA.
  • In specialised haematology hospitals, care includes round-the-clock monitoring of the patient's condition, supportive treatment and psychological help.

Recovery after the course

Recovery after intensive treatment takes a long time and rests on three pillars: medical follow-up, psychological support and lifestyle changes. During rehabilitation, patients deal with returning to physical activity, restoring immune function and managing the side effects of treatment. MediUkraine arranges specialists who draw up individual rehabilitation programmes based on the type of treatment received and each patient's state of health.

The period after chemotherapy or stem cell transplantation involves the gradual recovery of blood counts, normalisation of internal organ function and building up the body's strength. Patients need regular monitoring: blood tests, checks of the internal organs and consultations with an oncologist. At this stage a dietitian, a physiotherapist and a psychologist play an important role in helping the body adapt to everyday life.

Late side effects are a separate challenge: fertility problems, cardiovascular disorders or second cancers. Through MediUkraine you get coordination of treatment, specialists for long-term follow-up and the option of consultations at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod.

Stages of treatment and monitoring of remission

Leukaemia treatment is built in stages, and each step depends on how well the previous one worked. First comes a detailed diagnosis to determine the type of leukaemia and its cytogenetic and molecular markers; on the basis of these data the haemato-oncologist chooses an effective regimen and records it in an individual protocol according to international standards.

The first stage is induction chemotherapy, which aims for complete remission. The medicines are given intravenously according to calculated regimens to destroy the leukaemia cells and restore normal blood formation. At the same time, supportive treatment is given, complications (above all infections) are prevented and metabolic disorders are monitored.

Patients at high risk of relapse may be recommended allogeneic haematopoietic stem cell transplantation. The procedure requires preparation of the body and strict monitoring during recovery. MediUkraine coordinates all stages, from the initial diagnosis to follow-up tests after the course is completed.

Why is leukaemia treatment in Ukraine a sensible choice?

Treatment in Ukraine offers good value for the quality of medical care. Chemotherapy, targeted therapy and stem cell transplantation usually cost less than at Western European and North American facilities. At the same time, haemato-oncologists work according to current international protocols and have access to modern medicines, so you do not pay extra for the clinic's location.

The MediUkraine service makes it easier to organise leukaemia treatment. Our team passes your test results to the haematologist at the partner clinic, who assesses your condition and advises where and how to continue treatment. This saves you from searching for a clinic and negotiating with it yourself.

In addition, when the clinic contacts you directly through our service, there are no intermediary mark-ups, so your money goes on treatment rather than administration. This makes intensive treatment more financially accessible for more patients.

How treatment safety is ensured

Patient safety rests on following international protocols and on quality control of medical services. Diagnostic equipment makes it possible to confirm the type of leukaemia and the stage of the disease accurately. All medicines included in treatment regimens are registered in Ukraine, and this is documented.

Haematology and oncology departments are equipped for bone marrow aspiration, cytogenetic analysis and testing the sensitivity of cells to chemotherapy agents.

MediUkraine checks the qualification documents of the medical staff and the clinic's licences. Every patient receives detailed information in advance about the proposed treatment, possible side effects and the follow-up plan. This preparation makes the treatment process transparent and reinforces the clinic's responsibility to the patient.

Frequently asked questions

What does leukaemia treatment involve?

It is comprehensive treatment of a blood cancer: destroying the abnormal cells, bringing the disease into remission and controlling its course from then on. Treatment consists of diagnosis, choosing an individual regimen and ongoing medical follow-up.

How much does leukaemia treatment cost in Ukraine?

The first step is a haematologist consultation at the partner clinic, from USD 20. The cost of treatment depends on the type of leukaemia, the stage of the disease, the range of tests and the length of treatment, so the doctor gives the plan and cost estimate after the examination.

Is preparation needed before leukaemia treatment?

Yes: before treatment starts, you have a full set of tests, including blood tests and specialised diagnostics. Without these data it is impossible to determine the type of leukaemia accurately and choose an effective approach.

Is leukaemia treatment right for me?

Treatment is needed for patients with a confirmed diagnosis of leukaemia or a well-founded suspicion of it. The haemato-oncologist makes the final decision after a full assessment.

What tests might I need before treatment?

These are usually extended blood tests, bone marrow tests, immunological and genetic tests; they are used to determine the form of the disease and choose the treatment regimen.

How long do treatment and follow-up take?

It depends on the type of leukaemia: from several months to a long period of maintenance therapy and regular monitoring.

Can leukaemia be cured completely?

The answer depends on the type of disease, the patient's age and the stage at which it was detected. In acute leukaemias in children, remission is achieved in 85–90% of cases, and most treated children have long-term remission. The outlook for adults is more complex, but chemotherapy regimens and haematopoietic stem cell transplantation offer a chance of complete remission even in aggressive forms.

Chronic leukaemias follow a different course: they often become a controlled disease, with which patients live for many years with a good quality of life thanks to targeted therapy and newer medicines. The key factor is early detection and treatment by specialised haematology teams. MediUkraine arranges a haematologist consultation at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, where the doctor advises where and how to continue treatment according to international protocols.
