Gastroscopy in Ukraine

Gastroscopy is an examination of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum with a gastroscope: a thin, flexible instrument with optics and a camera that sends a real-time image of the lining to a monitor. It is recommended for pain in the upper abdomen, heartburn, nausea, and suspected gastritis, ulcer, reflux, bleeding or a growth. During the examination the doctor can take a biopsy for histology or carry out treatment, such as stopping bleeding or removing a polyp. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia or brief sedation; it takes 10–20 minutes and does not require a hospital stay. MediUkraine arranges the examination with a gastroenterologist at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, agrees a convenient time and provides a quote with no hidden charges.

Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.

What is gastroscopy

Unlike ultrasound or X-ray, which show an organ indirectly, an endoscopic examination gives the doctor a direct view of the lining, and the chance to take a tissue sample on the spot. That is why the method remains the main one when the aim is not only to see a change but to find out what it is: inflammation, erosion, an ulcer, a polyp or a tumour.

The instrument itself, the gastroscope, is a thin, flexible tube with a video camera at the tip and a working channel for instruments. Through this channel the doctor takes a biopsy, stops bleeding or removes polyps, so a single examination can be both diagnostic and therapeutic.

Depending on the indications, the examination is done under local anaesthesia or intravenous sedation. In most cases it is a short outpatient procedure with no hospital stay: the doctor explains the preparation in advance, and it is usually enough not to eat or drink for 6–8 hours. After local anaesthesia you can go home straight away; after sedation, once you have rested under the supervision of the nursing staff.

Gastroscopy remains a key method for diagnosing gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, reflux, bleeding and tumours of the stomach and duodenum. A condition found in time lets the doctor prevent complications and choose a treatment that matches its stage.

MediUkraine arranges the examination with an experienced gastroenterologist at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, agrees the examination plan and provides a quote with no hidden costs. You receive a report with the doctor's conclusion and, if needed, a consultation on further treatment.

Coming to Uzhhorod for treatment: what to expect

Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.

Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.

Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.

Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.

Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

Who needs the examination

An endoscopic examination is recommended when digestive symptoms do not go away with standard treatment or when a diagnosis needs to be confirmed.
Reasons include persistent pain in the upper abdomen, heartburn, nausea, vomiting, bloating, appetite changes, suspected stomach bleeding or anaemia of unknown cause.
Sometimes the procedure is done for treatment: to stop stomach bleeding or to remove a polyp or a foreign body.

How to prepare for the procedure

  1. Preparation begins with a consultation with a gastroenterologist: the doctor clarifies your symptoms, medical history and the results of previous tests, such as ultrasound, blood tests or an abdominal CT scan.
  2. Be sure to tell the doctor about every medicine you take, above all anticoagulants, aspirin, vitamins, supplements and heartburn remedies.
  3. The day before, avoid fatty and spicy food, do not smoke and drink enough water.
  4. If you develop a fever the day before, a chronic condition flares up, or you were unable to pause a medicine as agreed, call the clinic and the examination will be rescheduled.

Types of examination: diagnostic and therapeutic

The method is chosen individually, according to your condition, the preliminary diagnosis and the purpose of the examination. The procedure can be diagnostic, to find the cause of pain, heartburn, nausea or bloating and to confirm or rule out gastritis, an ulcer or a tumour, or therapeutic, when stomach bleeding needs to be stopped, polyps removed or other treatment carried out.

Diagnostic gastroscopy gives the doctor a detailed picture of the lining of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum and shows even minimal changes, areas of inflammation or erosions. If needed, a biopsy is taken during the examination and the tissue sample is sent for histology. Video endoscopes give a clear image with minimal discomfort for the patient.

Therapeutic endoscopy is needed when the cause of the symptoms can be dealt with straight away: stopping bleeding, removing polyps or carrying out targeted coagulation of affected areas of the lining. Such an examination can also be part of the overall treatment of peptic ulcer disease or of follow-up after surgery.

The examination is done under local anaesthesia or sedation, depending on the indications. The doctor chooses the type of pain relief after a consultation and examination, taking into account the planned procedures and any other conditions you have.

The MediUkraine team arranges the examination at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, where it is carried out according to international protocols. You receive an accurate diagnosis, a detailed treatment plan and a quote with no hidden costs.

Benefits of the method for the patient

  • Gastroscopy is a minimally invasive method for diagnosing and treating the digestive organs that shows the lining of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum from the inside.
  • The MediUkraine team arranges the examination at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, where it is carried out according to international medical protocols.

What happens after the procedure

The examination does not end when you leave the endoscopy room: in the first hours, pay attention to how you feel. A slight sore throat, discomfort or bloating is a normal short-term reaction of the lining and passes on its own.

For the first 24 hours, avoid hot drinks, alcohol, smoking and strenuous exercise: the lining needs time to recover. You can eat after 2–3 hours, once the local anaesthetic has fully worn off. After sedation, do not drive or operate machinery for a day.

Usually you return to your normal routine the same day. However, the doctor may advise a few days of rest if additional procedures were carried out during the examination, such as a biopsy, polyp removal or coagulation of the lining. During this time it is important to drink enough water, follow the dietary advice and avoid spicy and fatty food.

Pain, vomiting with blood or a sharp rise in temperature is a reason to contact the clinic immediately. The MediUkraine team arranges follow-up after the procedure and a consultation with a gastroenterologist, including on the histology results.

Endoscopic examination and digestive health

Gastroscopy shows the inner surface of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum and reveals inflammation, erosions, ulcers, polyps, growths or other abnormal changes. Diagnostic accuracy is combined with the option of carrying out treatment straight away, which is why the method remains a cornerstone of gastroenterology.

The examination is particularly useful for chronic gastritis, heartburn, stomach pain, bloating, nausea, and suspected ulcer or tumour. During the examination the doctor takes a biopsy or does a Helicobacter pylori test to identify the cause of the condition precisely. The diagnosis is made without surgery, and treatment can begin straight after the examination.

The earlier changes in the lining are detected, the more treatment options the doctor has, from medication to endoscopic treatment during the same examination. The MediUkraine team arranges the examination at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, where it is carried out according to international standards.

Why is gastroscopy cheaper in Ukraine?

When planning a digestive examination, patients often compare prices in different countries. In Ukraine, gastroscopy combines good-quality endoscopic equipment with a much lower price than at clinics in Europe or Turkey. You go through the full cycle at one medical centre: a consultation with a gastroenterologist, the examination and, if needed, treatment.

The reasons for the lower cost are straightforward. First, the cost of providing medical services (premises, utilities, consumables) is lower than in EU countries. Second, competition between private clinics pushes them to offer clear examination packages with no hidden charges. Third, the examination is done as an outpatient procedure, so the price does not include a long hospital stay.

A lower price does not mean lower standards: the partner clinic follows strict sterility protocols, uses single-use instruments, and monitors anaesthesia and your condition. The examination is done by experienced gastroenterologists with high-definition video endoscopes, so the risk of complications is low.

The main reasons for the lower cost of the examination in Ukraine:
• lower running costs of clinics and medical centres;
• transparent prices with no hidden charges;
• the option of having the procedure as an outpatient, without a hospital stay.

How safe is the examination?

At the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, an endoscopic examination of the stomach follows established standards: sterility, monitored anaesthesia and proven equipment. Video endoscopes with a thin, flexible tube reduce discomfort and give a clear image of the lining.

During the examination you are under the supervision of an anaesthetist, who first checks your allergies, other conditions and the medicines you take in order to choose the right drug. Local anaesthesia or intravenous sedation makes the examination practically painless. All procedures are done in sterile endoscopy units, with single-use instruments and air disinfection systems, which also matters for patients with chronic conditions.

When choosing a reliable medical facility, consider the gastroenterologists' experience, the equipment, genuine patient reviews and price transparency. When booking, ask straight away who will provide the sedation and how quickly the report with the histology results will be ready.

Frequently asked questions

What is gastroscopy in Ukraine?

Gastroscopy is an endoscopic examination of the oesophagus, stomach and duodenum with a thin, flexible instrument fitted with a video camera. It reveals gastritis, ulcers, polyps, the source of bleeding or a tumour at an early stage.

How much does gastroscopy cost in Ukraine?

The cost depends on the type of anaesthesia and on any additional tests; prices for each option are shown in the table above. The clinic gives the exact amount once it is known whether a biopsy and histology are needed.

Do I need a visa to have a gastroscopy in Ukraine?

Citizens of most European countries and a number of other states do not need a visa for a short visit. Check the current entry rules for your citizenship before you travel; the MediUkraine team helps you plan the route of your treatment.

Am I suitable for gastroscopy?

The examination is recommended for patients with chronic abdominal pain, heartburn, bloating, nausea, or a suspected ulcer or gastritis. The final decision is made by the gastroenterologist after a consultation.

What types of gastroscopy are there?

Diagnostic, to clarify the diagnosis, and therapeutic, to remove polyps, stop bleeding or inject medicines precisely where needed. Both are done either under local anaesthesia or under sedation.

How long is the recovery after gastroscopy?

You return to your normal routine within a few hours of the examination. For the first day, avoid hot drinks and spicy food.

Can gastroscopy help with stomach pain or nausea?

Yes. The examination shows the cause of the symptoms, from gastritis to erosions or ulcers, and allows the doctor to treat the cause rather than just relieve the pain.
