Heart Ultrasound (Echocardiography) in Ukraine

Echocardiography is an ultrasound examination in which the doctor sees the heart in motion: how the walls contract, how the valve leaflets work and which way blood flows through the chambers and great vessels. In 20–40 minutes the cardiologist measures the size of the atria and ventricles, the thickness of the myocardium and the ejection fraction, the values used to assess heart failure, valve disease and the effects of a heart attack or high blood pressure. The procedure needs no preparation and is done as an outpatient, and you receive the report with recommendations after the examination; if needed, it is supplemented with an ECG or a Doppler scan of the blood vessels. MediUkraine arranges the examination with a cardiologist at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, books a time that suits you and supports you from booking to the explanation of your results.

Cost of a heart ultrasound (echocardiography) in Ukraine

Service🇺🇦 Ukraine🇨🇿 Czech Republic🇹🇷 Turkey
Heart ultrasound (echocardiography)from USD 23from USD 250from USD 300

Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.

About echocardiography: how the method works

Cardiac ultrasound is based on echoes: the probe sends out ultrasound waves, which are reflected differently by blood, muscle and connective tissue, and the scanner turns these echoes into an image. The Doppler effect adds the speed and direction of blood flow to the picture, so the screen shows not only the anatomy but also the haemodynamics. This combination is why the method has become a cornerstone of cardiology: one scan shows both the structure of the heart and how it works.

The examination takes place in real time on high-resolution scanners. The doctor combines several scanning modes: B-mode to visualise anatomical structures, M-mode to measure parameters and Doppler to analyse blood flow. The probe works transthoracically, through the chest wall, and the whole procedure takes 20–30 minutes.

The examination is ordered when heart failure, high blood pressure, congenital or acquired heart defects, rhythm disorders or pulmonary hypertension are suspected, and after a heart attack. The doctor assesses the size of the chambers, the thickness of the walls, the condition of the valves and the strength of contraction, and these data explain where breathlessness, chest pain and other cardiac symptoms come from.

MediUkraine arranges the examination with a cardiologist at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod for your specific purpose, from a routine check-up to clarifying a complex diagnosis, and takes care of booking and scheduling.

Coming to Uzhhorod for treatment: what to expect

Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.

Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.

Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.

Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.

Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

Equipment, doctors and your report

Ukrainian cardiology centres perform both transthoracic and transoesophageal echocardiography, which allows a detailed assessment of the heart's structure, valve function and haemodynamics.
The examination costs considerably less in Ukrainian clinics than in European and American facilities, with comparable diagnostic quality.
You do not have to wait weeks for the results, and a cardiologist consultation is often available the same day, which is frequently the deciding factor for a complete assessment of the heart.

How to prepare for the examination

  1. Preparing for a heart ultrasound is simple, but a few rules noticeably affect image quality.
  2. Wear clothing that is easy to remove from the upper half of your body.
  3. At MediUkraine we arrange the examination at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod to suit your request.

Types of echocardiography: TTE, TOE and stress echo

Transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) is the standard option, with the probe placed on the chest. It gives the doctor detailed images of all the structures of the heart and lets them assess the pumping function of the left and right ventricles, the condition of the valves, the size of the chambers and any congenital defects. TTE is non-invasive, involves no radiation and is the first step in diagnosing most cardiovascular diseases.

Transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE) is ordered when the transthoracic approach does not give enough information or when higher resolution is needed. The probe is passed into the oesophagus, from where the heart can be seen at close range. The method is essential for detecting blood clots in the heart chambers, endocarditis and complex congenital defects, and for assessing prosthetic valves. The procedure requires light sedation and is performed under the supervision of an anaesthetist.

Stress echocardiography is performed with physical exercise or medication and reveals hidden myocardial ischaemia. It is used to assess the heart's functional reserve and to diagnose significant narrowing of the coronary arteries. MediUkraine will tell you which of these options is available at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod.

Advantages of the method for patients

  • Echocardiography shows the structure and work of the heart muscle in real time, without punctures and without pain.
  • The examination is performed by qualified cardiologists.
  • The results come as a detailed report with recommendations, and the images and measurements are kept at the clinic, so a future examination can be compared against them.

What to do after the examination

No recovery is needed after the procedure: it is a non-invasive test with no punctures or incisions. Straight after the scan you return to your usual activities without any restrictions. This absence of a recovery period is what sets the method apart from invasive cardiac tests.

If the examination was part of treatment for an underlying heart condition, such as an arrhythmia, heart failure or valve disease, you continue to follow your doctor's instructions on medication and physical activity. The findings become the basis for adjusting your treatment and checking that it works, so keep the report and bring it to every follow-up appointment.

The MediUkraine team arranges cardiac diagnostics and follow-up at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod. We coordinate every stage, from the initial examination to the repeat check of your cardiovascular system, and, if needed, help arrange a further consultation to discuss the report.

Diagnostic value of the examination

Ultrasound of the heart is a non-invasive method that shows the anatomy and function of the organ in real time. The probe is placed in turn in several positions on the chest, so the doctor gets complete information about how the heart chambers, valves and great vessels work.

During the scan the cardiologist measures the size of the atria and ventricles, the thickness of the myocardial walls and the ejection fraction, and records abnormal blood flow and valve dysfunction. These data reveal left ventricular hypertrophy, signs of heart failure, congenital and acquired heart defects, blood clots and tumours. The method needs no special preparation and is painless.

The examination takes 20–30 minutes and can be done as an outpatient. The results are provided as a detailed report with treatment recommendations. Through MediUkraine you can book the examination at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod and get a professional consultation with a cardiologist.

Why is a heart ultrasound (echocardiography) more affordable in Ukraine?

Heart ultrasound (echocardiography) is a non-invasive diagnostic method that shows the structure and function of the heart chambers, valves and vessels. In Ukraine it is becoming ever more accessible: medical facilities are upgrading their equipment and specialists are improving their skills. Compared with clinics in Europe and North America, the examination costs 40–60% less in Ukrainian medical centres, with a comparable class of equipment and level of cardiological expertise.

The main reason for the lower price is the different cost structure of healthcare. Ukrainian clinics do not carry the heavy overheads typical of clinics abroad, and doctors' pay remains considerably lower while their professional standards are sound. Competition between private medical facilities also keeps diagnostic prices within reasonable limits.

MediUkraine arranges the examination at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, where it is performed by experienced cardiologists, and shows you the cost before you book.

Frequently asked questions

What is a heart ultrasound (echocardiography)?

Echocardiography is an ultrasound examination of the heart that shows its structure, how the valves work, how the myocardium contracts and which way the blood flows. The procedure is painless, needs no special preparation and takes up to 30 minutes.

How much does a heart ultrasound cost in Ukraine?

The price of echocardiography in Ukraine is noticeably lower than in EU countries and depends on the type of examination: standard, Doppler or stress echo. The starting price for each type is shown in the table above.

Do I need a visa for an examination in Ukraine?

Most international patients do not need a visa for a short medical trip. However, entry rules depend on your citizenship, so check them before you travel.

How do I know whether a heart ultrasound is right for me?

Echocardiography is ordered for breathlessness, chest pain, arrhythmia, suspected valve disease or high blood pressure. If you have any of these symptoms, a cardiologist will decide whether the examination is appropriate after an initial consultation.

What types of heart ultrasound are there?

In Ukraine transthoracic, transoesophageal and stress echo examinations are performed. Each type covers its own part of the picture, from the structure of the valves to how the heart works under load.

How long does a heart ultrasound take?

The scan takes 20 to 40 minutes. After the examination you receive the results and the doctor's recommendations straight away.

Does a heart ultrasound help prevent complications?

An ultrasound scan does not treat anything by itself: it is a diagnostic method. But it reveals structural and functional problems with the heart before severe symptoms appear, and gives the doctor grounds to choose a course of action: medication, surgery or monitoring over time.

How far complications can be avoided depends on the nature of the disease and the stage at which it was found. Some defects and arrhythmias are corrected surgically, while others need long-term medication to control the symptoms. Early detection improves the chances of successful treatment and a better quality of life. If you need echocardiography, the MediUkraine team will arrange it at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod with experienced specialists.
