Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.
Antiretroviral therapy (ART) acts on several stages that the virus uses to replicate inside the cell: a combination of medicines blocks them at the same time, so fewer and fewer new virus particles are produced and CD4 lymphocytes stop dying. The virus remains in the body, so the medicines are taken every day without breaks.
At the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, an infectious disease specialist consults you, assesses your condition and advises where and how to continue treatment; MediUkraine helps arrange the visit. The regimen is chosen individually, taking into account the type of virus, the state of the immune system and any associated conditions. Regular CD4 and viral load tests show whether treatment is working and give grounds to change it in good time.
In addition to medicines, follow-up includes psychological support, prevention of opportunistic infections and a conversation about daily life and habits. Doctors explain separately how the virus is transmitted, why doses must not be missed and how missed doses lead to resistance.
MediUkraine makes it easier to find help by connecting patients with a specialist who advises where people living with HIV can receive treatment and psychosocial support.
Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.
Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.
Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.
Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.
Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

Antiretroviral therapy (ART) is the basis of HIV treatment. You take a combination of medicines that suppress replication of the virus and allow the immune system to recover. Regimens include reverse transcriptase inhibitors, protease inhibitors and integrase inhibitors. If the regimen is followed without interruption, the viral load falls to an undetectable level: AIDS does not develop, and the virus is not transmitted sexually.
Alongside the medicines, there is regular monitoring of immune status (CD4 and viral load), as well as diagnosis and prevention of opportunistic infections. Patients need psychosocial support, consultations with an infectious disease specialist and, if needed, doctors of related specialties.
At the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, an infectious disease specialist consults you and advises where and how to receive HIV care with current regimens and approved medicines. We coordinate booking and follow-up so that you get to the right doctor sooner.
The first months of treatment are the period when the body gets used to the medicines and the doctor checks whether they are working. The goal of this stage is viral suppression (undetectable viral load) and recovery of the immune system. Blood tests for CD4 cells and viral load are done regularly: once a stable result is reached, usually every 3–6 months.
At the same time, the doctor manages side effects of antiretroviral medicines: lipid disorders, changes in glucose metabolism and reduced bone density. Some of these show up only in test results, not in how you feel, so tell the doctor about any new symptoms at your scheduled visit. This also includes psychological support, dietary adjustments and advice on physical activity. The specialist at the partner clinic advises where to continue long-term follow-up, and MediUkraine helps arrange it.
With missed doses the virus returns to the blood and the regimen loses its effect, so the dosing schedule and scheduled visits to the infectious disease specialist matter as much as the medicines themselves. It is worth noting the date of the next check-up test straight after each appointment, so the schedule of examinations stays on track for years.
Treatment regimens are based on international guidelines and combine medicines of different classes: nucleoside and non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitors, protease inhibitors and integrase inhibitors. The aim is an undetectable viral load, which stops opportunistic infections from developing and preserves the immune system.
After that, everything depends on monitoring: CD4 cell count, viral load, a viral resistance test, and liver and kidney function. How often examinations are repeated depends on the stage of the disease and how well you tolerate the medicines. MediUkraine organises examinations and consultations with infectious disease specialists, who choose the regimen individually, and keeps your test results in one place.
A separate part of the work is psychological support and a conversation about adherence: without daily doses, the virus gets out of control. Patients receive advice on preventing secondary infections and on lifestyle. A couple in which one or both partners have HIV should discuss planning a pregnancy with the infectious disease specialist in advance, before conception.
Treatment in Ukraine costs noticeably less than at clinics in Western Europe and North America. The reason is the difference in prices for antiretroviral medicines and diagnostic procedures. The difference comes from the general level of prices for medical services in the country. The partner clinic holds a Ministry of Health licence for medical practice, and the scope of examinations and the schedule of check-ups are provided on request.
Specialist consultations, instrumental diagnostics and hospital stays are also cheaper. The MediUkraine platform helps you find qualified infectious disease specialists who follow current HIV management guidelines, and shortens the time needed to organise your medical route.
The doctor determines what will be included in the final amount (medicines, tests, consultations) after the examination, and MediUkraine helps you get a cost estimate before you travel.
Treatment is carried out according to clinical guidelines. MediUkraine works with a clinic that holds a licence from the Ministry of Health of Ukraine: this document confirms the clinic's right to provide medical care.
At the MediUkraine partner clinic, an infectious disease specialist assesses your condition, orders viral load and CD4 tests if needed and advises where and how to continue treatment. The staff maintain confidentiality: your data do not leave the clinic. The treatment regimen is drawn up individually, taking into account the resistance profile of the virus, associated conditions and possible drug interactions.
The clinic provides a copy of its licence on request. MediUkraine coordinates appointments and helps arrange the necessary tests and subsequent monitoring. Antiretroviral medicines are supplied by pharmaceutical distributors authorised to sell them in Ukraine.
