The appointment begins with an ordinary conversation: the doctor asks what is bothering you, how long it has been going on and which drops or sprays you have already tried. Next comes a standard examination with a mirror and a head light, and only after that the endoscope. You sit in a chair with your head resting on the headrest; adults are examined without general anaesthesia.
Before the endoscope is inserted, the mucosa is usually sprayed with a local anaesthetic and a decongestant: this reduces sensitivity and slightly widens the nasal passages. The examination itself does not damage the tissue: it is a thin tube with a camera and a light source that moves along the natural passages of the nose. If the doctor decides that a sample needs to be taken for testing, this is a separate procedure, and they will tell you about it separately.
The doctor guides the camera along the inferior and middle nasal passages, examines the septum, the turbinates and the area where the nose connects with the paranasal sinuses, and then moves down to the nasopharynx. If laryngoscopy is needed, you are asked to breathe calmly, hold a long sound and cough: this shows how the vocal folds close.
Everything is shown on a monitor, so both the doctor and you can see the image. Straight after the examination the doctor explains what they saw, and attaches images or a video recording to the report if the clinic makes them. No hospital stay is needed: after the examination you go home. The doctor will tell you when you can return to your usual activities and drive: this depends on whether an anaesthetic was used and how the examination went.
Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.
Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.
Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.
Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.
Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

The most common reason to come is nasal congestion that lasts for weeks and does not go away with drops. The endoscope shows what exactly is obstructing breathing: swelling of the mucosa, a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, polyps or enlarged adenoids in the nasopharynx.
The second large group of indications is nosebleeds and loss of smell. During the examination the doctor can see the vessel that is bleeding and assess the area responsible for the sense of smell. One-sided symptoms need special attention: when only one side is blocked or bleeds, the examination is arranged without delay.
Hoarseness, a feeling of a lump in the throat, a persistent cough and snoring lead to an examination of the larynx and nasopharynx. Laryngoscopy shows the vocal folds at work: nodules, swelling, incomplete closure. For people in voice-dependent professions it is a basic examination, not a last resort.
Endoscopy is also done before planned procedures: septoplasty, sinus surgery and adenoid removal. The surgeon needs a picture of the nasal cavity from the inside to plan the approach. The examination is often repeated after surgery to see how the mucosa is healing.
Diagnostic endoscopy has few absolute contraindications, and most restrictions are temporary. The doctor decides whether the examination is appropriate right now: with a high temperature or a severe general condition, a planned visit is usually postponed. Bleeding disorders and suspected acute inflammation of the epiglottis require particular caution. A heavy nosebleed is a reason to seek emergency care, where, on the contrary, an endoscope is used to find the source of bleeding.
Tell the doctor about any blood-thinning medicines in advance, before the examination, not after it. This does not rule out the examination: it is information the doctor takes into account when planning it, and, if needed, they consult the relevant specialist.
Very narrow nasal passages, a markedly deviated septum or severe swelling sometimes prevent the endoscope from being passed all the way. In that case the doctor limits the examination to the accessible area and assesses the rest with a thinner flexible endoscope or orders an additional test.
It is also worth understanding the limits of the method itself. An endoscope sees the surface of the mucosa, not what is inside the sinuses and bones: that requires computed tomography. Endoscopy and CT do not replace each other: the first shows a live picture and allows a sample to be taken, the second shows the extent and depth of the changes.
You can go home straight after the examination: if it was done without sedation, endoscopy places no restrictions on driving or work. If a local anaesthetic was used, a feeling of numbness remains in the nose and throat for a while: until it wears off, it is better not to eat or have hot drinks.
Mild discomfort in the nose, a tickling feeling, sneezing or a few drops of blood when blowing your nose are a normal reaction of the mucosa to contact with the endoscope. These pass on their own.
If heavy bleeding, severe pain or difficulty breathing appear after the procedure, see a doctor without waiting for a planned check-up. Such reactions are unusual, but it is worth knowing about them in advance. A MediUkraine coordinator stays in touch after the visit as well.
ENT endoscopy in Ukraine usually costs less than at clinics in the EU, and the reason is economics, not the quality of the equipment. Rent, taxes and salary levels are different here, while the endoscope itself in Uzhhorod may be the same brand as in Vienna.
Patients from abroad often come specifically for diagnostics, because in many countries there is a noticeable wait between a referral to an ENT specialist and the examination itself. At Ukrainian private clinics the consultation and endoscopy are often done in one visit.
For medical travel this is a convenient format: the examination is outpatient, needs no hospital stay and fits easily into a trip. If the examination reveals a problem that requires surgery, further treatment is planned with the images, the description and the report already in hand.
Several things affect the cost of the visit: the type of endoscope and the scope of the examination, the ENT specialist's qualifications, and whether a video recording and a written report are included. A MediUkraine coordinator will help you clarify these terms with the partner clinic in Uzhhorod before your trip.
ENT endoscopy is a routine outpatient procedure: it is a diagnostic examination without incisions that does not damage the tissue and is performed in adults without general anaesthesia. The inconvenience is mostly limited to discomfort during the examination itself.
The most common unwanted reactions are minor bleeding from the mucosa, sneezing and watery eyes. Stronger reactions are less common: a marked gag reflex during examination of the larynx, or dizziness. Tell the doctor about such sensations straight away, without waiting for the end of the examination. Allergy to the local anaesthetic is rare, so mention any previous reactions to anaesthetics before the procedure.
Infection safety depends on how the instruments are processed. An endoscope that comes into contact only with the mucosa requires at least high-level disinfection after each patient, and the specific processing regime depends on the type of instrument and the clinic's protocol. Asking how the clinic processes its endoscopes is a normal patient right, and where clinics work to international standards, this question is answered calmly.
MediUkraine arranges your visit to the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, clarifies the terms of the visit and agrees the date: the platform is not a medical facility and does not audit the quality of treatment. The text on this page is for information only and is not a diagnosis or a prescription: the decision on whether you need the examination is made by a doctor after an in-person consultation.

📍 Uzhhorod, Ukraine
A multidisciplinary hospital in Uzhhorod, part of a network of medical facilities in western Ukraine: an outpatient clinic, a surgical centre covering 15 specialties and a 30-bed inpatient unit. Its 52 doctors include professors and PhDs; many operations are done as day surgery, with discharge after 1–2 days.
It is an examination of the nasal cavity, nasopharynx and larynx with a thin endoscope that has a camera and its own light source. Depending on the task, the doctor performs rhinoscopy, an examination of the nasopharynx or laryngoscopy, and displays the image on a monitor. It is a diagnostic procedure, not an operation: the examination itself does not damage the tissue, and no hospital stay is needed.
The procedure is usually unpleasant rather than painful: you feel pressure and tickling in the nose, and sometimes want to sneeze. The mucosa is usually sprayed with a local anaesthetic before the examination, which reduces sensitivity. When the larynx is examined, some patients have a gag reflex, which is why it is better not to come for the procedure after a heavy meal.
An endoscope shows the live surface of the mucosa in real time: swelling, discharge, movement of the vocal folds, the source of bleeding. CT shows what is inside the bones and sinuses, where the camera cannot reach. These examinations do not replace each other, and before sinus surgery doctors often prescribe both.
The visit takes about as long as a regular ENT appointment, and the endoscopic examination itself is only part of it. No hospital stay is needed: the procedure is outpatient, and you return to your usual activities the same day. The exact time depends on the scope: a targeted examination of the nose is shorter than a sequential examination of the nose, nasopharynx and larynx.
There are no age limits as such: it depends on the diameter of the endoscope and whether the child can sit still. The examination is most often needed to assess enlarged adenoids and nasal patency, and the doctor decides which endoscope to use and whether sedation is needed depending on the child's age and tolerance. A lot depends on preparation: if the child is told in advance what will happen, they cope with the examination much more easily.
The price depends on the scope of the examination, the type of endoscope and whether the visit includes a consultation, a written report and a video recording. In Ukraine this diagnostic test usually costs less than at clinics in the EU, and the reason is mostly economic: different levels of rent, taxes and salaries. Confirm the final amount with the clinic: a MediUkraine coordinator will help you clarify the terms at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod.
Yes, if the examination was done without sedation: adults have endoscopy without general anaesthesia, so it does not restrict driving and you do not need someone to accompany you. Just wait until the local anaesthetic has worn off before eating or having hot drinks.
