Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.
Inflammation of the gallbladder begins when the outflow of bile is disrupted: a stone or swelling blocks the cystic duct, bile stagnates, the gallbladder wall becomes irritated and then bacteria join in. That is why treatment works in two directions: relieving inflammation and restoring the flow through the bile ducts. The doctor chooses the approach based on ultrasound, liver function tests and amylase levels, and the form of the disease (acute or chronic) determines whether it will be medication, physiotherapy or surgery.
The key advantage of a minimally invasive approach is quick recovery. Laparoscopic access reduces the risk of complications and shortens the hospital stay: you return to your usual way of life within 1–2 weeks of the operation. Removing the gallbladder also removes the source of repeated inflammation and pain.
During the operation the surgeon removes the inflamed gallbladder through small punctures without damaging neighbouring organs. The operation takes up to 90 minutes and is usually performed under general or spinal anaesthesia. In most cases you leave the clinic the next day.
Cholecystitis is a common digestive disease, especially among middle-aged and older people. Without treatment it can lead to pancreatitis or peritonitis, so if you have repeated attacks of pain under the right ribs, it is worth booking an appointment with a gastroenterologist and having an abdominal ultrasound.
Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.
Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.
Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.
Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.
Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

The treatment approach for cholecystitis is chosen individually, taking into account the form of the disease (acute or chronic), whether there are stones in the gallbladder, your age and other conditions. The main options are medication, endoscopic or laparoscopic procedures and, in complex cases, open surgery. Surgery is recommended for frequent flare-ups, stones, a risk of perforation or purulent inflammation.
In Ukraine laparoscopic cholecystectomy is performed most often: the gallbladder is removed through a few small punctures in the abdominal wall. Blood loss is minimal, digestion recovers quickly and the hospital stay is short. You return to your usual way of life within 5–7 days.
If the inflammation is not accompanied by stones, a conservative approach is chosen: antibiotics, enzyme preparations, a diet and monitoring of bile duct function. In severe acute inflammation, when surgery has to be postponed, a temporary drain may be placed in the gallbladder to reduce pressure and inflammation.
In complex cases or when cholecystitis is combined with other digestive conditions, endoscopic treatment or open surgery is needed. Ukrainian clinics perform these procedures with full anaesthetic care and a low rate of complications.
Aftercare matters as much as the procedure itself. In the first days you may have mild abdominal discomfort, a feeling of heaviness or bloating, which is a normal reaction. Return to your usual routine gradually, and avoid physical overexertion and fatty food for the first 1–2 weeks.
How long recovery takes depends on the form of the disease and the chosen method. After laparoscopic cholecystectomy most patients return to their activities within 7–10 days. After conservative treatment, digestive function usually recovers within two weeks. The gastroenterologist gives final recommendations at the follow-up visit.
A diet that limits fatty and fried food, enough water and a gradual increase in activity are the basic conditions for recovery. Daily walks help, as they improve digestion and circulation. Avoid alcohol, spicy food and overexertion during this period.
If you develop a fever, the pain gets worse, or you have nausea or yellowing of the skin, contact the clinic immediately for a consultation and adjustment of treatment.
The aim of treatment is not only to relieve inflammation of the gallbladder but also to get digestion back to its normal rhythm. It is important to get rid of more than just the pain: repeat attacks and complications need to be avoided. Both medication and laparoscopic removal of the gallbladder aim to keep the liver and pancreas working steadily.
The method is chosen after a detailed examination by a gastroenterologist or surgeon: ultrasound, bile tests, liver function tests and enzyme levels. If the inflammation is uncomplicated, the doctor may recommend medication, a diet and monitoring over time. In chronic cholecystitis or cholecystitis with gallstones, laparoscopic removal of the gallbladder is advisable: it removes the source of recurrences together with the gallbladder itself.
Not everyone needs surgery. If the inflammation is mild and the bile ducts are not blocked, the doctor may suggest conservative treatment monitored with ultrasound and laboratory tests. The decision takes into account your condition, age and test results.
When planning treatment, take into account not only the cost of the operation itself but also related costs: diagnostics, accommodation, medicines, aftercare following discharge and transport. In Ukraine the total bill usually comes out lower, because most services, from tests to surgery, are provided at one centre, and the hospital stay lasts 1–2 days.
Why are prices lower in Ukraine? First, the cost of medical services (bed-days, consumables, premises, medical staff salaries) is much lower than in EU countries or Turkey. Second, competition between private clinics encourages transparent package deals with no hidden charges. Third, minimally invasive techniques shorten the time in hospital, which directly affects the final amount.
At the same time, care in Ukraine is reliable: private clinics follow international medical protocols and provide anaesthetic care, infection control and post-operative monitoring. Experienced surgeons perform laparoscopic operations routinely, with predictable results and a low rate of complications.
Key reasons for the affordable cost in Ukraine:
▪ lower costs of hospital stays, consumables and premises
▪ transparent package deals and competition between private clinics
▪ a short hospital stay thanks to laparoscopic techniques and quick recovery
Private clinics in Ukraine work to European standards: full anaesthetic care, infection control and round-the-clock monitoring in the post-operative period. Both the medication and the laparoscopic approach involve a short hospital stay and a predictable course. Many clinics have their own diagnostic facilities, so tests and treatment take place in one place.
When choosing a clinic, look at the doctor's experience, the number of operations performed, adherence to international protocols and transparent pricing.

📍 Uzhhorod, Ukraine
A multidisciplinary hospital in Uzhhorod, part of a network of medical facilities in western Ukraine: an outpatient clinic, a surgical centre covering 15 specialties and a 30-bed inpatient unit. Its 52 doctors include professors and PhDs; many operations are done as day surgery, with discharge after 1–2 days.
Cholecystitis is inflammation of the gallbladder, either acute or chronic. It is usually caused by stones, bile stagnation or infection. Treatment started in good time helps avoid complications and normalise digestion.
The cost depends on the type of inflammation, the tests needed and the treatment method. Conservative treatment costs noticeably less than laparoscopic gallbladder removal; current prices are shown in the table on this page, and they are lower than in EU countries or Turkey.
Citizens of many countries, including most European countries, do not need a visa. MediUkraine can advise on planning your arrival and on transfers, and can help you find accommodation.
The doctor decides on the indications after an ultrasound, tests and a consultation. If stones, repeated attacks of pain or a risk of complications are found, laparoscopic surgery is recommended.
Depending on the form of the disease, medication or surgery is used. Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is performed most often: a minimally invasive operation with a short recovery period.
After the operation you usually stay at the clinic for 1–2 days, and full recovery takes up to two weeks. You return to your usual diet gradually, under the doctor's supervision.
After laparoscopy the digestive system adapts over several weeks. A diet and the gastroenterologist's recommendations help you avoid discomfort and restore normal digestion.
