Capsule Endoscopy in Ukraine

Capsule endoscopy is an examination of the small intestine with a miniature camera that you swallow like an ordinary tablet, with no tube and no anaesthesia. Over 6–8 hours the capsule moves through the digestive tract with peristalsis, transmits thousands of images of the mucosa to a recorder worn on the body and later leaves the body naturally. The method is used for hidden bleeding, anaemia of unclear origin, suspected Crohn's disease, coeliac disease or tumours, that is, where a gastroscope and a colonoscope cannot reach. The examination is done as an outpatient procedure, with no hospital stay and no recovery period. The first step is a consultation with an endoscopist at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, from USD 16; the cost of the examination itself is named after the consultation. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.

Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.

What is capsule endoscopy

The small intestine remains out of reach of the gastroscope and the colonoscope, and it is exactly this area that capsule endoscopy opens up. The swallowed device, with a mini camera and a light source, moves through the digestive tract with peristalsis and for 6–8 hours transmits images to a recorder worn on your body.

In one examination the doctor receives more than 50,000 images of the mucosa. They show small erosions and sources of bleeding, inflammatory changes, polyps and tumours, without anaesthesia, a tube or a hospital stay. For you this means that more complex invasive procedures often become unnecessary, and the time to diagnosis is shorter.

The examination is ordered for suspected internal bleeding, Crohn's disease, coeliac disease, anaemia of unclear origin, tumours or pain of unclear cause. There are few age restrictions, the procedure is done on an outpatient basis, and right after swallowing the capsule you go back to your usual activities.

At Ukrainian clinics the method is used according to international protocols, and you receive the report 1–2 days after returning the recorder. A gastroenterologist explains what the recording showed and whether further steps are needed at a consultation on the results.

Coming to Uzhhorod for treatment: what to expect

Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.

Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.

Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.

Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.

Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

When capsule endoscopy is ordered

The main indications include suspected Crohn's disease, coeliac disease, tumours, polyps, erosions or bleeding in the small intestine.
Often this kind of diagnosis removes the need for invasive procedures.
MediUkraine books a consultation with an endoscopist at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod: the doctor will assess the indications and advise where and how to have the examination.

How to prepare for the examination

  1. Preparation is simple, but the quality of the images depends directly on it.
  2. The main task is to clear the digestive tract so the camera sees the mucosa and not food residue.
  3. Be sure to tell the doctor about all the medicines you take, above all iron supplements, anticoagulants, and diabetes or blood pressure medication.
  4. The doctor gives detailed preparation instructions, and the MediUkraine team helps with booking the endoscopist consultation, translating documents and a cost estimate before you travel.

Types of capsules and areas examined

The type of examination is chosen according to which part of the digestive tract needs examining and which symptoms you have. The technology is available for the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine and large intestine.

The main option is small bowel capsule endoscopy. It is used to find the source of bleeding, inflammatory changes, tumours, erosions or polyps that an ordinary endoscope cannot reach. The capsule, with a mini camera and a light source, transmits thousands of images to an external recorder, so the doctor can see even small changes in the mucosa.

There are also specialised capsules for the stomach and the large intestine: they are used when a growth is suspected, in inflammatory bowel disease or for screening. Some variants assess the motility of the digestive tract and track the course of a disease that has already been diagnosed.

When a more detailed analysis is needed, other capsule types may be used. They give more detailed imaging, also without a hospital stay or anaesthesia.

Which type of capsule suits your case is decided by the gastroenterologist, based on your symptoms, previous test results and the area to be examined. It is worth raising this at a consultation before you book the procedure.

Advantages of the method

  • Capsule endoscopy combines detailed imaging of the mucosa with no mechanical intervention: no endoscope, no anaesthesia and no day in hospital.

What happens after the procedure

After swallowing the capsule you do not stay at the clinic: there has been no anaesthesia and no intervention, so your usual daily routine continues: you can work, go home or to your hotel, or take a walk. In the first hours mild abdominal discomfort or a sensation of the capsule moving is sometimes felt; this is normal and goes away by itself.

Then you need to wait for the capsule to leave the body naturally: this usually happens within 24–72 hours. While the recording lasts, you wear the image recorder; until the capsule has passed, follow the doctor's advice on diet and physical activity. When the recording is complete, the specialist downloads the data and prepares a detailed report.

To help the capsule pass through the digestive tract without obstruction, drink enough water, avoid heavy physical exertion and keep to a light diet. Agree any medicines or vitamins you take during these days with your doctor. If you develop abdominal pain or nausea, or the capsule has not passed within three days, contact the clinic for a further check.

The doctor analyses the recording and prepares a report with a plan for further steps; results are usually ready 1–2 days after you return the recorder.

What the doctor sees on the images

Capsule endoscopy records the condition of the mucosa of the oesophagus, stomach and intestine automatically: the camera takes frame after frame as the capsule moves through the digestive tract. The resulting series shows inflammation, ulcers, polyps and sources of bleeding, including those that show up only through indirect signs such as anaemia of unclear origin.

The type of capsule is chosen individually. Before the procedure the gastroenterologist may prescribe preparation, such as bowel cleansing, a diet, temporarily pausing certain medicines as agreed with the prescribing doctor, or additional tests, so that the images are clear. When Crohn's disease or coeliac disease is suspected, specialised capsules with higher resolution are used.

Not everyone needs invasive procedures. If the symptoms are moderate or previous test results need clarifying, a capsule examination often settles the question without tubes or anaesthesia. The final decision is made by the gastroenterologist at the consultation, taking into account the indications, your history and the purpose of diagnosis.

Why is capsule endoscopy cheaper in Ukraine?

When planning capsule endoscopy, count not only the price of the examination itself but also the related costs: consultations, tests, preparation and analysis of the results. In Ukraine this package works out noticeably more affordable: logistics are simple, consultations and tests are done at one centre, and you receive the report within 1–2 days.

Why are prices lower? Firstly, the underlying cost of medical services, such as rent, consumables and staff, is noticeably lower here than in the Czech Republic or Turkey. Secondly, competition between private clinics makes them show an itemised estimate: consultation, preparation, capsule, analysis of the recording. Thirdly, the diagnosis is done on an outpatient basis: there is no day in hospital and none of the related costs.

Cheaper does not mean simpler: diagnostic centres in Ukraine follow international sterility protocols and guide you from preparation to a detailed analysis of the recording with a gastroenterologist's report.

Is the examination safe and how do you choose a clinic?

In Ukraine, capsule endoscopy is performed according to international safety standards. The procedure requires no anaesthesia, tube or endoscope: you swallow a miniature capsule with a camera, it passes naturally through the digestive tract and records thousands of images. It does not injure the mucosa, and you feel no pain. The main risk is the capsule getting stuck if there is a narrowing of the bowel, which is why the doctor checks for this beforehand.

The examination is performed in line with sterility requirements, and the data are transmitted to an external recorder; the examination itself involves no ionising radiation, unlike X-ray methods. The recording is analysed by a gastroenterologist: the accuracy of the report depends on this specialist's experience no less than on the class of the equipment.

When choosing a medical centre, look at the doctors' qualifications, the type of equipment and price transparency.

Frequently asked questions

What is capsule endoscopy?

It is a modern non-invasive way to look at the digestive tract from the inside. You swallow a miniature capsule with a camera that automatically takes thousands of images of the mucosa. The images are sent to a recorder worn on the body. No tube or anaesthesia is needed, and you feel no pain.

How much does capsule endoscopy cost in Ukraine?

The first step is a consultation with an endoscopist at the partner clinic, from USD 16: the doctor will assess the indications and advise where and how to have the examination. The cost of capsule endoscopy itself depends on the capsule type (for the small intestine, stomach or large intestine) and the clinic; it is named after the consultation, and MediUkraine can help you get an estimate before you travel.

Do I need a visa for Ukraine?

For citizens of most European countries, Israel, Canada, the UK or Turkey, short visits (up to 90 days) are visa-free. You will need a valid passport.

Am I a suitable candidate for capsule endoscopy?

Yes, if the small intestine needs to be examined: for suspected hidden bleeding, coeliac disease, inflammatory diseases (such as Crohn's disease), polyps or pain without an established cause. The method is not suitable for bowel obstruction or impaired swallowing; the doctor determines the indications after an examination.

What types of capsule endoscopy are there?

There are several types: for the small intestine, the stomach and the large intestine, as well as a panoramic option that examines the whole digestive tract. The systems used offer high resolution and automated image analysis.

How long does the procedure take?

Usually 6 to 12 hours, depending on how quickly the capsule passes through the digestive tract. All this time you go about your normal activities while the device records data. The capsule leaves the body naturally within 24–72 hours, and the results are ready in 1–2 days.

Is capsule endoscopy safe?

It is considered a low-risk examination. The procedure is performed according to international protocols, with certified single-use capsules, without anaesthesia or a hospital stay. Complications are rare, under 1%. The main limitation is a suspected narrowing or obstruction of the bowel: in that case the doctor chooses another diagnostic method.
