Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.
A perianal abscess (paraproctitis) starts in the anal glands: infection enters the crypts at the junction of the rectum and the anal canal and spreads from there into the loose fatty tissue around the bowel. A cavity filled with pus forms there, which is why the pain builds quickly and swelling and fever appear. This is an urgent condition: the abscess has to be drained surgically rather than waiting for the inflammation to settle on its own.
The main treatment is surgical drainage of the abscess under local or general anaesthesia. Depending on the location and extent of the inflammation, doctors use both conventional incisions and minimally invasive methods. After the pus is removed, the cavity is cleaned and drained so that fluid does not collect again. At the same time, broad-spectrum antibiotics and dressings under a specialist's supervision are prescribed.
A separate stage is finding and dealing with the primary source of infection, the damaged crypt. In most cases this is a planned procedure 1–2 months after the acute process has been brought under control. This second stage reduces the risk of the disease becoming chronic and of a fistula forming by 70–80%.
MediUkraine arranges treatment with experienced surgeons at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, where patients are followed up after discharge as well.
Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.
Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.
Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.
Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.
Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

Conservative treatment is used in the early stages: antibiotics, topical antiseptics and symptomatic treatment. This approach aims to stop the inflammation and prevent a cavity of pus from forming. However, once an abscess has formed conservative treatment is usually not enough, so you remain under close medical supervision.
Surgery remains the main treatment for both acute and chronic paraproctitis. The procedure involves draining the abscess, removing dead tissue and cleaning the inflamed cavity. In the chronic form, a radical operation is often performed to excise the fistula and the source of infection. Both conventional surgery and minimally invasive techniques using laser and radiofrequency coagulation are available.
Post-operative care includes dressings, rinsing the wound with antiseptic solutions and antibiotics. Healing time depends on the severity of the inflammation and the method used. MediUkraine arranges treatment at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, which supports you from diagnosis to rehabilitation.
The recovery period after perianal abscess treatment depends on the method and how complex the disease is. After minimally invasive procedures (laser or radiofrequency coagulation), patients return to normal activity within 3–5 days. After open surgery, rehabilitation takes 2–4 weeks, with physical activity increased gradually.
In the first weeks it is important to follow the recommendations: washing with warm water, topical painkillers and anti-inflammatory products, and a high-fibre diet to normalise bowel movements. Dressings and check-ups with the specialist follow the schedule set by your doctor. Avoid intensive sport and sitting for long periods during the first month.
If complications arise or you have questions about rehabilitation, contact your doctor. MediUkraine will arrange a proctologist who will draw up an individual recovery plan and set the dates of follow-up visits.
The approach depends on the stage of the disease and the type of abscess. In the early stages, conservative treatment includes antibiotics, anti-inflammatory medicines and local treatment. However, most cases of paraproctitis require surgery to empty the cavity of pus.
The main operation involves opening and draining the abscess under local or general anaesthesia. The surgeon locates the abscess by touch and with ultrasound, makes an incision in the skin and mucosa, removes the pus and drains the cavity. Small abscesses are treated on an outpatient basis; widespread inflammation is treated in hospital.
MediUkraine will help you book an initial examination with a qualified proctologist at the partner clinic on a day that suits you.
The price difference is explained by the cost structure, not by the level of medical care
In European centres and the USA, surgery for this condition can cost USD 5–8 thousand. The price is driven by the cost of running healthcare facilities and specialists' pay. Colorectal surgeons in Ukraine are qualified to perform minimally invasive procedures, including draining an abscess and removing a fistula in one or two stages, which reduces your overall costs.
Another advantage is a shorter wait for surgery. At private clinics in Ukraine planned surgery can be carried out within 7–14 days, whereas at European hospitals the wait is often 2–3 months. An acute abscess, however, is drained urgently, as delay risks complications. MediUkraine helps you coordinate appointments and inpatient treatment, showing prices and realistic timelines in advance.
Post-operative care and prevention of recurrence at Ukrainian clinics are also more economical, as follow-up visits are outpatient at affordable rates. Work out the full estimate in advance: the consultation, the operation, dressings and follow-up visits are listed as separate items.
The safety of perianal abscess treatment rests on following established clinical protocols and national standards of surgical care. Ukrainian proctology departments use minimally invasive techniques that reduce the risk of complications and shorten rehabilitation. The method is chosen according to the stage of the inflammation and the location and nature of the abscess, which are determined during the preliminary diagnostics.

Paraproctitis is a purulent inflammation of the tissues around the rectum that develops when infection enters the anal glands. An abscess forms, causing pain, swelling, fever and a general feeling of being unwell. Without treatment, paraproctitis can become chronic or lead to a fistula.
The cost depends on the form of the disease (acute or chronic), the type of treatment (conservative or surgical) and the level of the clinic. On average, the price starts from USD 246 for surgical drainage. At private clinics the price includes diagnostics, the consultation and follow-up after the procedure.
See a proctologist if you develop pain in the anal area, swelling, a raised temperature, or discharge of pus or blood. These symptoms indicate inflammation that needs urgent treatment. Delay can lead to an abscess or a fistula.
Before treatment the doctor examines you and, if needed, orders blood tests, an ultrasound or a rectal examination. If surgery is planned, do not eat for 6–8 hours before the procedure. You should also have a bowel preparation and tell the doctor about all the medicines you take.
Yes, but only under the supervision of a proctologist and a gynaecologist. In most cases gentle antibiotic treatment or a minimally invasive procedure, chosen with the pregnancy or breastfeeding in mind, is used. It is important not to delay treatment, as purulent inflammation is dangerous for both the mother and the baby.
The main indications are pain in the rectum, a raised temperature, a painful swelling, discharge of pus or blood, as well as weakness and signs of toxicity. In the chronic form, a fistula or repeated episodes of inflammation.
Inflammation can be stopped without surgery only at an early stage, before an abscess has formed: then antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicines under a proctologist's supervision help. Once a cavity of pus appears, surgery is needed, either draining or opening the abscess, because the pus cannot be relied on to drain on its own.
A full cure is possible after radical surgery, in which the inflamed tissue is removed and the internal opening of the fistula is closed. Without proper treatment, paraproctitis often becomes chronic and keeps recurring.
