Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.
Rectal prolapse is a condition in which the mucosa or the full thickness of the bowel wall protrudes through the anus. It is caused by weakening of the pelvic floor muscles and supporting ligaments, which results from chronic constipation with constant straining and from age-related tissue changes. The bowel most often comes out during a bowel movement or physical exertion, and later incontinence, mucus discharge and injury to the mucosa follow. At this stage conservative measures can no longer keep the bowel in place, so surgery is the definitive solution.
Surgeons use several established groups of techniques. Perineal operations (including the Delorme procedure) are performed through the perineum and are recommended for older patients with a high anaesthetic risk. Abdominal techniques (anterior resection of the rectum, ventral mesh rectopexy) give better functional results and a lower recurrence rate, especially in younger patients. The choice depends on your age, general health and other medical conditions.
The aim of surgery is to stabilise the rectum, return it to its normal position and prevent recurrence. Most operations are performed using minimally invasive laparoscopy, which causes less tissue trauma and speeds up recovery.
MediUkraine books a consultation with a proctologist at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod: the doctor will assess your condition and advise where and how to continue treatment.
Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.
Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.
Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.
Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.
Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

Conservative or surgical treatment is chosen depending on the stage of the disease and your general condition. In the early stages, conservative methods work: strengthening the pelvic floor muscles and adjusting your diet and physical activity. They eliminate the constant straining that keeps the prolapse going. When the condition progresses, surgery cannot be avoided; otherwise the risk of complications and a poorer quality of life increases.
A common option is abdominal rectopexy: the rectum is fixed to the sacrum with a special mesh or sutures, which hold the organ in the correct position after the tissues have healed. This approach gives reliable stabilisation and a low recurrence rate. The operation can be performed through an open approach or laparoscopically; the latter is less traumatic and shortens recovery.
The alternative is perineal rectosigmoidectomy, indicated mainly for older patients or those with significant other medical conditions. It is performed through the perineum, without opening the abdominal cavity. The method for your case is chosen by the proctologist: the decision depends on the degree of prolapse, your age and other diagnoses.
Recovery after rectal prolapse surgery takes from 2 to 4 weeks, depending on the surgical method and your individual circumstances. Bed rest is recommended for the first day to take the load off the operated area. On the second or third day light, measured activity is usually allowed: walking along the ward corridor and breathing exercises that protect against lung complications.
Dietary restrictions also matter: liquid food for the first 3-5 days, then a gradual move to soft food. Eat small portions at breakfast, lunch and dinner. You are prescribed laxatives to regulate bowel movements and avoid straining. For 3-4 weeks you must not do heavy physical work, lift more than 3-5 kg or do intensive sport.
Pain is controlled with painkillers as prescribed by the doctor. The operated area is washed with warm water without soap. If needed, the MediUkraine team can help you book a consultation with a proctologist at the partner clinic to check how you are healing.
Surgery is planned when conservative methods no longer work and the wall of the rectum protrudes through the anus, especially during a bowel movement or physical exertion. The surgeon's task is to fix the bowel in the anatomically correct position and restore its normal function.
The main approaches are abdominal (transabdominal) and perineal (transanal). In the abdominal operation a resection rectopexy is performed: the redundant part of the bowel is removed and the rectum is fixed in place. Perineal operations are chosen for older patients or when the surgical risk is high.

Rectal prolapse surgery in Ukraine costs less than abroad, mainly because of lower costs for medical services. Medical services in Ukraine are usually more affordable than in developed European countries or the USA: the costs of running healthcare facilities, staff pay and materials are different. At the same time, proctologists work with modern equipment and use minimally invasive and endoscopic approaches.
In addition, there are no long waiting lists for planned surgery in Ukraine, so the operation takes place within 1-2 weeks of the consultation.
MediUkraine arranges a proctologist consultation at the partner clinic, from USD 20: the doctor will advise where and how to continue treatment, and we help you get a cost estimate before you travel.
The safety of rectal prolapse surgery rests on following established clinical protocols and on a thorough pre-operative assessment. Ukrainian proctologists use minimally invasive techniques: laparoscopic ventral mesh rectopexy and retrorectal fixation of the bowel. Compared with open surgery, they cause less tissue trauma, shorten rehabilitation and lower the risk of complications.
Clinics that perform this surgery are equipped with modern surgical equipment, including laparoscopic systems and monitors for intra-operative control. The staff hold the required qualification certificates and regularly update their skills.
The pre-operative assessment matters as much as the surgical technique itself: before the operation you are fully examined by a proctologist and other specialists. MediUkraine, as a medical intermediary, books a proctologist consultation at the partner clinic, and the doctor advises where and how to have the operation.

Its 52 doctors include professors and PhDs; many operations are done as day surgery, with discharge after 1–2 days.
Rectal prolapse is a condition in which part or the full thickness of the bowel protrudes through the anal canal. It causes pain, discomfort, a feeling of a foreign body and sometimes faecal incontinence. Most often it develops because of weak pelvic floor muscles, chronic constipation or age-related tissue changes.
The first step is a proctologist consultation at the partner clinic, from USD 20. The cost of treatment itself depends on the surgical method (laparoscopic rectopexy or reconstructive surgery), the type of anaesthesia and the length of stay, so the doctor names the plan and the estimate after the examination. MediUkraine can help you get an estimate before you travel.
See a proctologist at the first symptoms: a feeling of prolapse, inability to hold wind or stool, pain during bowel movements, or mucus or blood-stained discharge. Seeing a doctor early allows less invasive treatment and helps avoid complications.
Before the operation the doctor orders tests: blood tests, an ECG and a consultation with the anaesthetist. 2-3 days before surgery, switch to a light diet, cut out foods that cause bloating and have a bowel preparation. On the day of the operation, do not eat or drink for 6-8 hours beforehand.
During pregnancy surgery is usually postponed until after the birth, unless the mother's life is at risk. During breastfeeding, minimally invasive procedures are possible under the supervision of an anaesthetist and after agreement with your doctor.
The main indications are complete or partial prolapse of the bowel, faecal incontinence, pain, constant discomfort and conservative treatment that has not worked. The operation returns the organ to its anatomical position, relieves symptoms and reduces the risk of the prolapse coming back.
Surgery can be avoided only in the early stages, when only the mucosa protrudes: then changes to diet, pelvic floor strengthening and medication can work. When the disease progresses and the whole organ prolapses, conservative measures give only temporary relief, and surgery is needed.
Surgical methods, including rectopexy and resection with fixation, have high cure rates: about 85-90% of patients report complete relief of symptoms. Recurrence after surgery is uncommon, especially if you follow the advice on preventing constipation and on physical activity. MediUkraine will arrange a consultation with an experienced proctologist at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, who will carry out a detailed examination, make an accurate diagnosis and propose a treatment plan suited to your case.
