Stomach Cancer Surgery in Ukraine

Stomach (gastric) cancer surgery is the main way to remove a malignant tumour radically: the surgeon removes the affected part of the organ or the whole stomach together with the regional lymph nodes. The extent of the operation is determined by the stage of the disease, the location and size of the tumour and your general condition. Depending on the situation, a subtotal resection or a total gastrectomy is performed, often combined with chemotherapy before or after the operation. Some operations are performed laparoscopically, through several punctures in the abdominal wall, which means less blood loss, a shorter hospital stay and a lower risk of complications. At Ukrainian clinics a partial gastrectomy starts from USD 760.

Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.

About stomach cancer surgery

What matters most in this operation is not simply removing the tumour, but how radical the removal is. The surgeon removes the affected area with a margin of healthy tissue, together with the regional lymph nodes, because the lymphatic pathways are the first route by which the tumour spreads. D2 lymph node dissection is considered the standard: to establish the stage correctly, the pathologist must examine at least 15 nodes. Both the prognosis and the decision on chemotherapy after the operation depend on how complete this step is.

Ukrainian specialists operate both through open access and minimally invasively, including laparoscopically, through several punctures instead of a long incision. The second option shortens rehabilitation and reduces the risk of complications, but it is not suitable in every case: everything depends on the location and spread of the tumour. Before the operation you must have a full work-up: a CT scan, endoscopy and laboratory tests.

The result depends on the stage at which the disease was found and on the experience of the surgical team. The operation is often combined with chemotherapy before and after it: the course before shrinks the tumour, and the course after acts on any cells that may remain.

Coming to Uzhhorod for treatment: what to expect

Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.

Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.

Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.

Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.

Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

Surgical standards and the experience of surgical oncologists

Cancer centres in Ukraine operate according to the international TNM and AJCC classifications with the corresponding surgical technique.
A multidisciplinary approach means that the strategy before surgery is not decided by one doctor: the decision is made jointly by the surgical oncologist, the medical oncologist and other specialists.
After discharge you remain under supervision: adjuvant chemotherapy and scheduled check-ups are prescribed as indicated.

Preparing for stomach surgery

  1. Preparation begins with full diagnostics and an assessment of your general condition.
  2. Next comes a consultation with the anaesthetist.
  3. MediUkraine guides you through every stage of preparation, from booking tests to the first consultation with the surgeon, making sure the tests are done on time and in the right order.

Types of stomach cancer surgery

The extent of the operation is chosen according to the location of the tumour, the stage of the cancer and your general condition. Gastrectomy, removal of all or part of the stomach, together with resection of the regional lymph nodes, remains the standard for localised and locally advanced cancer. MediUkraine arranges treatment with surgical oncologists at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, who perform these operations according to international protocols.

Ukrainian clinics also use minimally invasive methods, laparoscopic and robot-assisted surgery. They are less traumatic, shorten recovery and reduce the risk of complications compared with open operations. However, they are technically demanding and are far from available at every facility, so this is worth clarifying when you plan treatment.

Combined treatment brings together removal of the tumour with neoadjuvant and adjuvant chemotherapy. This approach improves long-term results but requires several specialists to work in a coordinated way. The MediUkraine platform coordinates surgeons, oncologists and internists so that the treatment plan is coherent rather than a set of separate prescriptions.

Recovery after surgery

Recovery after stomach surgery is a long process that requires a comprehensive approach and specialist supervision. In the first month you are mobilised early under the supervision of a physiotherapist: movement reduces the risk of thrombosis and lung complications. Eating starts with liquid dairy products and broths, gradually moving on to small portions of normal food; this takes 6–8 weeks.

Psychological rehabilitation matters just as much: after a cancer diagnosis and major surgery, people have to get used to their own body again. Both group and individual sessions with a psychologist help here. Regular physical activity is needed at the same time: walks, breathing exercises and therapeutic exercise restore stamina and quality of life.

MediUkraine coordinates the whole rehabilitation process: outpatient follow-up, laboratory tests, and consultations with an oncologist, a gastroenterologist and other specialists. During the first year after the operation, check-ups take place regularly: they detect complications at a stage when they are still easy to correct.

Extent of surgery and prognosis

The extent of the operation is determined by the location and size of the tumour and the stage of the disease. For localised disease, a subtotal resection is performed: part of the stomach is preserved, and with it part of the digestive function. More advanced forms require a total gastrectomy, sometimes with removal of the spleen and part of the pancreas. The adjacent tissues and regional lymph nodes are removed together with the tumour.

Minimally invasive approaches, laparoscopy and robot-assisted surgery, shorten rehabilitation and reduce blood loss. Extended lymphadenectomy (at least 15 lymph nodes) gives correct oncological staging and improves the prognosis. Neoadjuvant chemotherapy is often prescribed before the operation to shrink the tumour.

After the operation you follow a special diet, physiotherapy and scheduled follow-up. MediUkraine coordinates treatment at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod and gives you access to experienced surgical oncologists. Your next step is to send your discharge summary and test results to receive a preliminary assessment of the treatment strategy and cost.

Why is stomach cancer surgery more affordable in Ukraine?

Stomach cancer surgery in Ukraine costs significantly less than the same procedure in Western Europe or North America. The cost of the operation at Ukrainian cancer centres is 40–60% of the prices in Germany or the USA, while the quality of surgical care meets international standards. The reason is not saving on materials or staff but the lower cost of medical services in general, in both the public and the private sector.

MediUkraine arranges treatment at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, where subtotal and total gastrectomies are performed according to the stage of the disease. We organise consultations with experienced surgical oncologists and the pre-operative work-up, and you do not pay separately for intermediary services.

Affordability is matched by technical capability: cancer centres have equipment for endoscopic resection and laparoscopic operations. Treatment is organised according to the TNM classification and adjuvant chemotherapy regimens, with a substantially lower financial burden on the patient.

Is stomach cancer surgery safe?

The risk in abdominal cancer surgery is not zero, but it is predictable: operations are performed according to international protocols, not improvised tactics. Ukrainian cancer clinics have equipment for diagnostics and surgery, including laparoscopic systems. The staff regularly update their qualifications.

The pre-operative work-up includes CT, endoscopy and laboratory tests: the strategy cannot be chosen without a correctly established stage. Surgeons perform a total or partial gastrectomy in line with oncological principles: with removal of the regional lymph nodes and clear resection margins.

MediUkraine arranges treatment at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod and helps you obtain the opinion of a specialist in this field. To do this, simply send your discharge summary, CT images and histology result; the coordinator then arranges the consultation and the next steps.

Frequently asked questions

What is stomach cancer surgery?

It is the removal of part or all of the stomach together with the nearby lymph nodes, the main way to deal radically with a malignant tumour. The aim of the operation is to remove the tumour completely, stop metastatic spread and preserve or restore the ability to eat normally.

How much does stomach cancer surgery cost in Ukraine?

The price depends on the stage of the disease and the extent of the operation. On average, a partial gastrectomy in Ukraine starts from USD 760. This is noticeably less than in EU countries or Turkey.

When should you see a doctor?

Reasons to book an appointment with an oncologist include persistent pain or heartburn, loss of appetite, sudden weight loss, a feeling of fullness after a small portion of food, nausea, or vomiting with traces of blood. The earlier the tumour is found, the greater the chance of a radical operation.

How do I prepare for stomach cancer surgery?

First you have full diagnostics: endoscopy, a CT or MRI scan, blood tests and an assessment of your heart and lungs. You must not eat or drink for 8–10 hours before the operation. The doctor also gives advice on diet and on the medicines you take regularly.

Can the operation be performed during pregnancy or with other medical conditions?

During pregnancy, surgery is performed only in exceptional cases, when the mother's life is at risk. If you have other chronic conditions, the decision is made by a multidisciplinary team of doctors after a detailed assessment of your condition.

What are the indications for stomach cancer surgery?

A tumour confirmed by biopsy, gastric bleeding, stenosis (narrowing of the passage), pain, digestive problems, and cases where conservative treatment has not worked.

Can stomach cancer be cured completely?

The chance of a full recovery is determined above all by the stage at diagnosis. With early detection (stages I–II), removing the tumour together with the lymph nodes gives five-year survival in 50–70% of patients. At late stages (III–IV) the prognosis is worse, but combining surgery with chemotherapy increases the chances of long-term remission.

Recovery is possible, but it depends on several conditions: good surgical technique, adequate lymph node dissection and subsequent adjuvant therapy. The MediUkraine team will arrange treatment at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, which has experience in treating stomach cancer and takes a multidisciplinary approach. The prognosis is always individual: it is influenced by the histological type of the tumour, its degree of differentiation and your general health. After radical surgery you have check-ups on a schedule set by the oncologist: they show whether the remission is holding.
