Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.
In azoospermia there is no sperm in the ejaculate, but sperm may still be present in the testicular tissue, and that is where it is retrieved from. There is an obstructive form, in which sperm production is preserved but the ducts are blocked, and a non-obstructive form, in which sperm production is severely reduced and occurs only in isolated areas. Material is also retrieved in ejaculatory dysfunction.
TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration) is an aspiration technique: a fine needle, local anaesthesia and no skin incision. TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction) involves a small surgical access to the testicular tissue. The choice depends on the clinical situation, the diagnosis and your anatomy.
The retrieved sperm is processed in the laboratory and used to fertilise eggs by ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) in IVF/ICSI programmes. The complication rate of this procedure is low, and it gives even men diagnosed with azoospermia a chance of biological parenthood.
MediUkraine arranges the procedure at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, which has the facilities and experience for such procedures.
Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.
Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.
Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.
Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.
Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration) is minimally invasive sperm retrieval from testicular tissue with a fine needle. It takes 15–20 minutes under local or general anaesthesia. It suits patients with obstructive azoospermia, when the ducts are blocked but sperm production is preserved: no full surgical operation is needed, and recovery is shorter.
TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction) removes a small area of testicular tissue through a tiny incision under local anaesthesia. This approach is more effective when sperm is unevenly distributed or in non-obstructive azoospermia, because it provides more material for analysis and for assisted reproduction programmes.
The choice of method is made according to the diagnosis, the results of previous tests and the fertility specialist's recommendation. After retrieval, the material is processed and its quality assessed in the laboratory, and only then is it used in an IVF or ICSI programme.
Recovery after testicular biopsy is usually quick and uneventful: most men return to their usual activities within a few days. In the first 24–48 hours there may be mild discomfort, slight swelling or bruising in the area; these are expected and gradually disappear without specific treatment.
For 7–10 days after the procedure avoid strenuous physical activity, sport and sexual intercourse. During this time it is advisable to wear supportive underwear for the scrotum, which reduces discomfort when moving. You can shower, but protect the wound from a direct stream of water. If needed, the doctor will prescribe mild painkillers.
The MediUkraine team provides detailed instructions and supports you through every stage of rehabilitation. If unusual symptoms appear, such as increasing pain, inflammation, fever or pus-like discharge, tell your doctor immediately. Full recovery takes 2–3 weeks.
TESA (testicular sperm aspiration) and TESE (testicular sperm extraction) are minimally invasive ways to obtain sperm directly from testicular tissue. They are recommended for men diagnosed with azoospermia (no sperm in the ejaculate) or with a severely reduced sperm count. TESA is performed with a special needle under ultrasound guidance, TESE through a small incision with removal of a microscopic fragment of tissue.
The procedure is outpatient, under local or general anaesthesia, and takes 15–30 minutes. The retrieved material is prepared straight away for assisted reproduction, primarily ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection). It is used immediately or cryopreserved for a later attempt.
MediUkraine will arrange the procedure at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, where it is performed by a team of andrologists and fertility specialists with the appropriate equipment.
Testicular biopsy (TESA/TESE) is minimally invasive retrieval of sperm from testicular tissue for assisted reproduction programmes. At European clinics it costs from EUR 1,500 to 3,000; in Ukraine, from USD 487. The difference in price comes from lower operating costs at Ukrainian facilities, such as staff pay and premises rent, not from the quality of care.
Ukrainian andrology centres have modern equipment for biopsy and subsequent analysis of the retrieved material. Specialists work to international standards, so the quality of diagnosis and of the procedure meets European criteria. MediUkraine works with the vetted partner clinic in Uzhhorod, which follows safety protocols and shows openly what the service includes.
Treatment in Ukraine saves money that can go towards additional procedures or the costs of an IVF programme. MediUkraine organises the whole process. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.
The safety of testicular biopsy rests on following urological treatment protocols. TESA (Testicular Sperm Aspiration) and TESE (Testicular Sperm Extraction) are performed under local anaesthesia with a low risk of complications. Appropriate diagnostic equipment and materials reduce the risk of infection and improve the accuracy of retrieval for assisted reproduction programmes.
At the partner clinic of MediUkraine in Uzhhorod, the rooms are equipped with sterile instruments, and quality control of the biological material improves the chance of preserving sperm for cryopreservation and later use.
MediUkraine coordinates the consultation, diagnostics and the operation itself and explains each stage of treatment to you in advance. Biopsy material is processed in specialised laboratories in line with healthcare requirements.

📍 Uzhhorod, Ukraine
A multidisciplinary hospital in Uzhhorod, part of a network of medical facilities in western Ukraine: an outpatient clinic, a surgical centre covering 15 specialties and a 30-bed inpatient unit. Its 52 doctors include professors and PhDs; many operations are done as day surgery, with discharge after 1–2 days.
It is the retrieval of sperm or testicular tissue for diagnosis and fertility treatment.
TESA: material is taken through a fine needle.
TESE: a small fragment of testicular tissue is removed surgically.
Both techniques give a chance of finding sperm even in azoospermia.
The price depends on the type of procedure:
TESE from USD 499,
mTESE from USD 487.
This is noticeably less than in EU countries or Turkey, with the same quality of medical care.
Citizens of most European countries do not need a visa for short medical trips. Patients from other countries should check the current entry rules before travelling.
The procedure is recommended for men with azoospermia, low sperm production, suspected obstruction or previous unsuccessful attempts to treat infertility. The andrologist confirms the exact indications after tests, an ultrasound and a consultation.
TESA, TESE and microsurgical mTESE are available.
TESA is minimally invasive.
TESE provides more material.
mTESE is the method of choice for complex cases when there is very little sperm.
The main discomfort passes within 3–5 days.
Full recovery takes 1–2 weeks.
After mTESE rehabilitation may take a little longer, depending on the individual.
The procedure is not expected to affect erection, libido or hormonal balance. When performed correctly, it does not harm fertility; on the contrary, it gives a chance of biological parenthood in azoospermia. The risks are low, and the doctor monitors them.
