Endometrial Biopsy in Ukraine

An endometrial biopsy is the removal of a small sample of the uterine lining for histological examination. It is recommended for abnormal uterine bleeding, suspected hyperplasia or precancerous changes, and before assisted reproduction programmes to assess whether the endometrium is ready for implantation. The sample is most often taken on an outpatient basis with a Pipelle aspiration cannula, and the pathologist's report is ready in 7–10 days. MediUkraine arranges the procedure at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod, agrees the appointment and supports you until you receive the result.

Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.

About endometrial biopsy

An ultrasound scan shows the thickness and structure of the uterine lining, but it cannot tell which cells make it up. Histology fills this gap: the pathologist examines the sample under a microscope and sees inflammation, hormonal disorders, hyperplasia or precancerous changes at the cellular level. That is why the test is recommended when imaging has gone as far as it can and the cause of the symptoms is still unclear.

The sample is taken without incisions, so the procedure does not require a hospital stay and in most cases takes a single outpatient visit. The discomfort is brief, aspiration sampling usually does not need anaesthesia, and recovery does not stretch over weeks. Once the histology report is ready, the doctor decides on the next step: monitoring, medication or further tests. You can book the procedure at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod through MediUkraine.

Coming to Uzhhorod for treatment: what to expect

Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Uzhhorod lies right on the border with Slovakia and close to Hungary, so patients usually arrive overland from one of these two countries, by car, bus or train.

Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.

Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur across the country, including in Uzhhorod, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.

Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.

Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

Indications for the test

An endometrial biopsy is recommended when a disorder of the uterine lining or a hormonal imbalance is suspected.
The test is recommended for women with irregular or very heavy uterine bleeding, bleeding or spotting between periods, and suspected endometrial hyperplasia.
Early detection of inflammation, hormonal changes or precancerous conditions means treatment can start in time and the risk of complications is lower.

Preparing for the procedure

  1. Preparation for an endometrial biopsy affects both how the procedure goes and the quality of the sample for histology.
  2. Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and supplements that affect blood clotting (vitamin E, fish oil, ginkgo, garlic) are stopped 7-10 days before the procedure, as agreed with your doctor.

Sampling methods

Aspiration biopsy is the main outpatient option. A thin cannula is passed through the cervix without dilating the canal, and the sample is collected by creating negative pressure, so it contains cells from the surface and glands of the endometrium. Sampling takes 2–3 minutes, no anaesthesia is needed and discomfort is minimal. Histological examination takes 7–10 days.

Curettage biopsy is used when a larger amount of tissue is needed. It is performed under local or general anaesthesia: the cervix is dilated and fragments of the endometrium are removed with a curette. It provides more tissue for assessment, but recovery takes longer.

Hysteroscopic biopsy involves examining the uterine cavity with a hysteroscope and taking targeted samples under direct vision. For localised tissue changes this method is more accurate, and if needed the doctor can carry out treatment at the same time. MediUkraine will help you choose the appropriate option, taking into account your indications and individual circumstances.

Benefits of the method

  • The main value of the method is information that neither an examination nor an ultrasound can give: histology detects changes in the tissue at an early stage, when there may be no symptoms yet.
  • Accurate diagnosis: an endometrial biopsy reveals inflammation, hormonal disorders, hyperplasia or precancerous changes.
  • Minimally invasive: in most cases the sample is taken without surgery or incisions; the procedure is short and well tolerated.
  • Quick recovery: women return to their usual routine almost immediately, without long restrictions.
  • A complete diagnostic pathway: the clinic covers the whole cycle, from the gynaecologist's consultation to the histological analysis.
  • Affordable cost: the procedure costs significantly less than in many European countries.

Recovery after the procedure

In the first few hours after sampling you may feel mild discomfort or a dragging sensation in the lower abdomen; this is a normal reaction and passes quickly. Most women return to their usual routine on the day of the procedure, without a hospital stay or sick leave. The diagnosis does not end there: the result still has to be interpreted and a plan chosen.

There are few restrictions: the doctor usually advises avoiding strenuous exercise, saunas, swimming pools and sexual intercourse for a few days, which lowers the risk of complications. Recovery is quick and does not require a special regime. You stay in contact with the clinic until the histology report is ready.

The result comes in about 7–10 days, and you take it back to the gynaecologist. At that visit the next steps are chosen: medication, further tests or other procedures, depending on the diagnosis. If no changes are found, follow-up is limited to monitoring and a check-up date set by the doctor.

Endometrial assessment and fertility

An endometrial biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure in which a small sample of the inner lining of the uterus is taken for histological examination. It is used to diagnose endometrial hyperplasia, cancerous changes, chronic inflammation and disorders that can affect fertility. Abnormal processes are visible at the cellular level, and this is what determines the right treatment.

The sample is taken with a special Pipelle cannula or a curette, under sedation or local anaesthesia. The procedure takes 5–15 minutes and can be done on an outpatient basis. Beforehand, a pelvic ultrasound is performed to assess the thickness of the endometrium and rule out contraindications. The sample is then sent to a pathologist for microscopic analysis.

Recovery is quick: women return to normal activity within 1–2 days, and mild pain and light spotting during this time are considered normal. The report is ready within 7–10 working days, after which MediUkraine arranges a consultation with a gynaecologist to go through the result in detail and plan further treatment.

Why is an endometrial biopsy more affordable in Ukraine?

The cost of an endometrial biopsy in Ukraine is lower not because of a simplified protocol but because of the general level of prices for medical services. The scope of work is the same: a tissue sample is taken from the uterine lining and analysed histologically. The indications are also standard: menstrual disorders, infertility, suspected hyperplasia or cancer. The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, without general anaesthesia, so it is minimally traumatic.

The difference is noticeable: in the USA and Western Europe a similar service costs from 1500 to 3000 dollars, while at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod the prices are shown in the table above.

The MediUkraine platform agrees your appointment with the doctor at the partner clinic and explains how to prepare for the procedure.

How safe is the procedure?

As with any medical procedure, the risk is not zero, but it is controlled at every stage. Sampling is carried out by gynaecologists using minimally invasive techniques, which reduces both the likelihood of complications and discomfort. Most often everything takes place on an outpatient basis, without a hospital stay, in line with sterility standards.

You do not go through this alone: a doctor is with you from the first consultation to the interpretation of the histology report. The result arrives quickly, and the next steps are decided on its basis.

When choosing a clinic, look at the doctor's experience, the diagnostic facilities and how clearly the costs are explained. MediUkraine shows you these details before you book.

Frequently asked questions

What is an endometrial biopsy?

It is a diagnostic procedure: the doctor takes a small sample of the uterine lining and sends it for histological examination. Under the microscope, inflammation, hormonal disorders, hyperplasia and other abnormal changes can be seen at an early stage.

How much does an endometrial biopsy cost in Ukraine?

The price depends on the method and the scope of the assessment. On average it starts from USD 150–400 and includes a doctor's consultation and histological examination. This is noticeably less than in most European countries.

Do I need a visa to have a biopsy in Ukraine?

Citizens of many countries can enter Ukraine visa-free for short stays.

Is an endometrial biopsy right for me?

The procedure is recommended for women with menstrual disorders, abnormal bleeding, suspected hyperplasia or difficulty conceiving. The doctor makes the final decision after a consultation and examination.

What methods of endometrial biopsy are there?

The most common are Pipelle biopsy and hysteroscopically guided biopsy. The first is quick and minimally invasive; the second is more accurate thanks to direct visual control.

How long do the procedure and recovery take?

The procedure itself takes 15–30 minutes and is done on an outpatient basis. Recovery usually takes 1–3 days, after which you return to your usual routine.

Does an endometrial biopsy affect fertility?

The sampling itself is a diagnostic test, not treatment, and in reproductive programmes it helps with planning a pregnancy. The tissue sample can reveal chronic inflammation, hyperplasia or hormonal disorders that prevent implantation, which is why the test is recommended for difficulty conceiving and before assisted reproduction programmes. The procedure is done on an outpatient basis on a day of the cycle chosen by the doctor, and women return to normal activity within 1–2 days.

What happens next depends on the findings. Most cases of hyperplasia can be corrected with hormone therapy, inflammatory conditions are treated with antibiotics, and with cancer the outlook depends on the stage at diagnosis. Based on the result, the doctor draws up an individual plan: medication, a hysteroscopic procedure or monitoring. MediUkraine helps you reach qualified doctors at the partner clinic in Uzhhorod who perform the procedure and manage further treatment. An early diagnosis improves the chances of successful treatment.
