Ultrasound in Ukraine: Heart, Vascular, Pregnancy and Other Scans

Most enquiries in this section are about the heart: heart ultrasound, also known as echocardiography or an “echo”. Next come vascular Doppler ultrasound and pregnancy scans. So it makes sense to start with the scan you have been referred for or were looking for: below you will find all nine types of ultrasound, with prices and duration.

What the method and price depend on

What affects the scope of the examination and the cost
Area examined — The price is linked to the organ being scanned. An ultrasound of one joint starts from USD 19; standard scans of the abdomen, kidneys, pelvis, breasts and thyroid start from USD 18; heart and vascular ultrasound starts from USD 19.
Whether Doppler is included — Assessing blood flow is added to a standard ultrasound and can change the cost: a standard thyroid ultrasound is from USD 19, and the same scan with vascular Doppler also from USD 19.
One area or a combined scan — Combined options cover several organs or add a consultation with a specialist. Abdominal ultrasound is from USD 18, the same scan with the kidneys from USD 21, and a combined scan with a gastroenterologist consultation from USD 38.
Stage of pregnancy — Pregnancy ultrasound is divided by trimester: the first scan is from USD 11, a detailed second-trimester scan from USD 33 and a follow-up third-trimester scan from USD 26.
How long the appointment takes — For the kidneys, pelvis, breasts and thyroid, this section lists 10–20 minutes; for the abdomen and blood vessels, the time depends on the scope of the examination and is confirmed when you book.
No anaesthesia needed — None of the nine scans in this section involves anaesthesia. This affects the preparation, and it also means that after most scans you can return to your usual activities straight away. After stress echocardiography, the doctor may ask you to rest in the department first, so follow their instructions.

Questions and answers

What is Doppler ultrasound?
It is a type of ultrasound scan in which the machine shows not only the structure of a blood vessel but also the blood flow inside it. In this section, Doppler is available both as a separate page — vascular ultrasound — and as an option within other scans: heart ultrasound with Doppler, pelvic ultrasound with Doppler and thyroid ultrasound with vascular Doppler.
Are heart ultrasound and echocardiography different tests?
No, these are two names for the same test; it is also often called an “echo”. There is one page for it in this section — heart ultrasound (echocardiography), from USD 23.
Can I have several scans in one visit?
Yes, several scans are usually scheduled for one appointment — this is arranged when you book. Some of the clinic’s options already combine several areas into one: kidney and bladder ultrasound from USD 21, breast + lymph node ultrasound from USD 23, combined arterial and venous ultrasound from USD 29. All scans are performed at the partner clinic.
How should I prepare for an ultrasound?
Preparation depends on the area being scanned. For the abdomen, you are usually asked to come on an empty stomach; for the bladder, the opposite — with a full bladder; for joints and the thyroid, no special preparation is needed. You will be told the exact requirements when you book a specific scan.
How long does an ultrasound take, and is anaesthesia needed?
No scan in this section requires anaesthesia. The duration depends on the area: 10–20 minutes for the kidneys and bladder, pelvis, breasts and thyroid; 15–30 for joints and soft tissues; 10–30 for a pregnancy scan. For the abdomen, heart and blood vessels, the time depends on the scope of the examination and is confirmed when you book.
What is the starting price in this section?
Prices in this section start with a first-trimester pregnancy ultrasound — from USD 11. Standard scans of the abdomen, kidneys, pelvis, breasts and thyroid start from USD 18, and heart and vascular ultrasound from USD 19. These are starting prices: the exact cost is based on the scope of the examination.
