Dental implants are one of the most popular areas of medical travel to Ukraine. Patients from Europe consider Ukrainian clinics because they combine qualified specialists with a cost that is significantly lower than in the EU. Understanding the key aspects of the procedure helps you make an informed choice and avoid mistakes.
01What is a dental implant, and how does the procedure go?
A dental implant is a titanium screw that is placed in the jawbone and acts as an artificial tooth root. An abutment and a crown are fitted on the implant, creating a restoration that looks and works much like a natural tooth.
The procedure takes place in several stages. First the dentist carries out a detailed assessment: a CT scan of the jaw and an evaluation of the bone and gums. Next comes the surgical stage of placing the implant, followed by a period of osseointegration lasting from 2 to 6 months.
Once the implant has fused with the bone, the permanent crown is fitted. The whole process, from the first visit to the final result, usually takes from 3 to 8 months, depending on the clinical situation and your individual characteristics.
Types of implants used in Ukraine
- Classic two-stage implants: the most common option; placement and fitting of the crown take place at two separate visits, with an interval for osseointegration.
- One-stage implants: allow a temporary crown to be fitted on the day of surgery; suitable when there is enough bone volume.
- Basal implants: anchored in deeper layers of bone, which in some cases makes it possible to avoid a sinus lift.
- Mini-implants: used to secure removable dentures or in patients with insufficient bone volume.
02How much do implants cost in Ukraine compared with other countries?
A single dental implant with a crown costs roughly EUR 500–900 in Ukraine, depending on the implant manufacturer, the crown material and the clinic. This is significantly lower than in neighbouring countries.
In Poland a similar procedure costs EUR 1,200–1,800, in Germany EUR 2,500–4,000 and in Israel from EUR 2,000 to 3,500. When several teeth are treated, the price difference can reach tens of thousands of euros, which is why patients from Europe are increasingly turning to Ukrainian dentists.
Many clinics use implants from well-known manufacturers such as Nobel Biocare, Straumann, Osstem and others.

03How do you choose a clinic for implants in Ukraine?
Choosing a clinic is the most important step. Look not only at the price but at the surgeon’s experience, access to CT imaging, the guarantees on the work and the implant systems used.
A reliable clinic always offers a preliminary online consultation and provides a detailed treatment plan broken down into stages, with the cost of each. The absence of a transparent cost estimate is a warning sign.
Patients from abroad also need to consider logistics: how many visits are needed, whether part of the treatment can be done at home, and how communication between the doctors is organised.
What to look for when choosing
- The surgeon’s experience: the number of implant procedures performed, relevant certification and participation in international conferences.
- Diagnostic facilities: a cone-beam CT scanner is essential for good-quality planning.
- Guarantees: many clinics give a guarantee on the implant of 5 years or more.
- Patient reviews: genuine reviews on independent platforms, not only on the clinic’s own website.
04What risks and contraindications should you consider?
Implant placement is a surgical procedure and, like any operation, carries certain risks. The most common complications are inflammation around the implant (peri-implantitis), delayed osseointegration or failure of the implant to integrate, in which case it is lost. With proper planning and good oral hygiene, these complications are uncommon.
Serious contraindications, or reasons to postpone treatment, include uncontrolled diabetes, severe blood clotting disorders, active cancer and taking certain groups of medicines (in particular bisphosphonates); the doctor assesses each of these individually. Other limiting factors, such as insufficient bone volume, heavy smoking and poor oral hygiene, can be addressed while preparing for surgery.
A preliminary consultation with the doctor and a full assessment make it possible to identify contraindications in good time and draw up a safe treatment plan. Do not skip the preparatory stage, even if you have no obvious health problems.
