Straumann Dental Implants in Ukraine

Straumann is a Swiss implant system that has been made since the 1970s. The extra cost buys specific things, not just a name on the box: the Roxolid alloy, used for narrower implants in a thin bone ridge; the hydrophilic SLActive surface, with a shorter recommended time before loading; the BLX line designed for immediate protocols; and the manufacturer's extended warranty on the product itself. At MediUkraine's partner clinics a Straumann implant costs from USD 733 and the SLActive version from USD 856, with the crown charged separately. In a straightforward case with enough bone these advantages often go unused, and the doctor makes the choice after a CT scan.

Prices in the “Ukraine” column come from MediUkraine’s partner clinics. The Czech Republic and Turkey columns show the lower bounds of prices published by clinics there (for Turkey, also the Turkish Dental Association’s recommended 2026 tariff), collected in August 2026 and converted to US dollars at the rate on the day of collection. A dash means we could not find a comparable published price. In any country, the final cost is set by the clinic after an examination.

What the Straumann system is and who it suits

Straumann is a Swiss dental implant manufacturer based in Basel that has been making implants since the 1970s. Together with the ITI, an international association of implantologists, the company runs a long-term clinical research programme, so the system has a large body of published long-term data. Choosing it means paying for four specific things: the Roxolid alloy, from which narrower implants are made; the SLActive surface with a shorter recommended time to loading; lines with different body geometry and connection types; and the manufacturer's extended warranty on the product itself.

The indications for implants are the same as for any other system: one missing tooth, several missing teeth in a row or a whole jaw, or a removable denture that does not stay in place. The question here is narrower: when it makes sense to choose Straumann in particular. There are four sound reasons: a narrow bone ridge, where a narrower Roxolid implant sometimes makes it possible to avoid bone grafting; immediate placement or immediate loading, where primary stability matters; difficult healing conditions, for which the hydrophilic surface was studied; and the need for access to original prosthetic components many years from now.

The other side deserves to be stated just as plainly. In a straightforward case, with enough bone, conventional timelines and one missing back tooth, the advantages of the more expensive system mostly go unused, because well-studied implant systems show similar long-term survival rates. On a limited budget, the money is often better spent on bone material, a custom abutment or periodontitis treatment: these affect the result more than the brand name on the box.

In some situations implant treatment is postponed or ruled out altogether, and no alloy or surface changes that: uncontrolled diabetes, treatment with bisphosphonates or denosumab at high oncological doses, active periodontitis with loose teeth, untreated infection at the site, a history of radiotherapy to the maxillofacial area, pregnancy, age before the jaws have finished growing. Some of these limitations are temporary and no longer apply after treatment or once the condition is stable.

MediUkraine is a treatment search and coordination service, not a clinic. We choose the clinic and the implantologist, arrange the visit dates and support you throughout, including if you are travelling from abroad. Whether an implant can be placed, and which system to use, is decided by the doctor after an in-person examination and a review of the CT scan.

Coming to Lviv for treatment: what to expect

Travel. Ukrainian airspace is closed, so there are no commercial flights. Patients reach Lviv overland, most often from Poland: Rzeszów and Kraków airports are the usual entry points, with a train, bus or private transfer onward to the border and on to the city. Lviv is roughly 70 km from the Polish border, the shortest crossing of any Ukrainian city.

Visas. Citizens of the EU, the United Kingdom and the United States do not need a visa for short stays in Ukraine. Rules depend on your citizenship, so check your own before booking.

Safety, plainly. Ukraine is at war. Air raid alerts occur in Lviv, and an appointment can be interrupted by one. Several governments advise against travel to Ukraine, and while that advice stands, ordinary travel and medical insurance is often void — confirm your cover with your insurer before you commit to anything.

Language. MediUkraine handles correspondence, scheduling, the written treatment plan and the quote in English. The clinic's team communicates with international patients in English.

Payment. You pay the clinic directly. Our coordination service is free of charge for you.

Doctor qualifications and equipment

The Straumann protocol has its own drill sequence, insertion torque and recommended loading times, so a certificate from this manufacturer has real practical value.
The restorative stage is led by a prosthodontist, and it matters that the clinic uses original components for the same platform.
Planning always starts with a cone beam CT scan, which shows the height and width of the bone and the position of the inferior alveolar nerve and the floor of the maxillary sinus.
Before the visit, check whether the clinic issues an implant passport with the reference number and batch number of the implant.

How to prepare for the surgery

  1. Preparation starts with a cone beam CT scan of the jaw.
  2. Two to three weeks before surgery, have any decay treated and your teeth professionally cleaned, because active inflammation in the mouth raises the risk of complications at the implant site.
  3. Make a list of the medicines you take and show it to the doctor before surgery.
  4. Ask the doctor what exactly will be placed, and get it in writing: the line, diameter, length and surface type.

Roxolid alloy, SLActive surface and implant lines

Straumann has been making dental implants since 1974, and over that time the system has gone through several generations of surfaces and connections. Its price reflects four independent features rather than one: the material of the implant body, its surface treatment, the thread design and the type of prosthetic connection. Below, each is covered separately, along with the clinical situations where it offers a real advantage and those where it adds cost without benefit.

Roxolid is an alloy of titanium and zirconium, roughly 85% titanium and 15% zirconium, developed by the manufacturer for dental implants. It has higher tensile and fatigue strength than the commercially pure grade four titanium traditionally used for implants, so thinner implants can be made from it without compromising mechanical reliability. The range includes 2.9 mm and 3.3 mm diameters for sites where the bone ridge is narrow or the gap between neighbouring teeth is small, such as lower incisors or upper lateral incisors. That is the main argument for this alloy: a narrower implant can sometimes avoid the need to widen the ridge with a bone graft, which means one procedure fewer and several months less treatment. But that is "sometimes", not "always": if the ridge lacks height and not only width, or the defect is large, augmentation cannot be avoided whatever the alloy.

The SLA surface, sandblasting with large-grit abrasive followed by acid etching, creates a microrelief into which the bone grows; it has been in use since the late 1990s, and most of the system's long-term clinical data are based on it. For SLA, the manufacturer recommends around six weeks from placement to loading in standard conditions, compared with up to twelve for older surfaces. SLActive is the same microgeometry, treated so that the surface stays chemically active and wettable: the implant is stored in a sealed ampoule of saline and removed just before placement, so blood makes closer contact with it and the clot holds better. On this basis the manufacturer shortens the recommended time to loading to about three to four weeks. This is the version clinics list as Straumann Active, from USD 856.

The limits of this advantage should be stated honestly. The shorter period is the manufacturer's recommendation for standard conditions, not an obligation for the doctor to load the implant after a month: the decision depends on primary stability, bone volume and the condition of the gums. Studies of the hydrophilic surface focus on difficult cases (controlled diabetes, grafted sites, slow healers), and that is where it makes the most sense. If you are otherwise healthy and can comfortably wait three months, the surface surcharge usually buys nothing more than a shorter schedule on paper.

The lines differ in placement level and connection type. Tissue Level is an implant with a smooth neck that comes through the gum; it is placed in a single surgical stage, usually towards the back of the mouth, where aesthetics are less critical. Bone Level is placed flush with the bone and covered by the gum; the CrossFit connection here is conical, and the platforms differ for the 3.3 mm diameter and for 4.1 and 4.8 mm. Bone Level Tapered is the same line with a tapered body, well suited to fresh extraction sockets and soft bone.

BLX is a newer line: a fully tapered body, a thread designed to condense bone as it goes in, and a single TorcFit prosthetic connection for all diameters. It was developed for immediate placement and immediate loading, where high primary stability is needed. One practical point matters for you here: BLX and Bone Level prosthetic components are not interchangeable, which is why the BLX abutment is charged as a separate item. It cannot be swapped for a cheaper component from another platform.

The company's zirconia implant is a category of its own: all-ceramic, white and metal-free. It is chosen by patients with thin gums through which a titanium neck would show, and by those who prefer not to have metal in their bone. It has limitations too: fewer diameters and prosthetic options, less scope to correct the crown angle, and less long-term data than for the titanium implants.

Treatment protocols are not a feature of the brand, but they determine whether the more expensive version is needed. Delayed placement: the tooth is extracted, the socket heals for two to four months, then the implant is placed. Immediate placement: the implant goes straight into the socket of the extracted tooth, which is possible when the socket walls are intact and there is no acute inflammation. Immediate loading: a temporary crown is fitted within the first few days; this requires high insertion torque, usually from 35 Ncm, and the crown is kept out of the bite so that chewing does not loosen the implant. These two scenarios are where the BLX design and the hydrophilic surface really contribute to the result; in the conventional delayed protocol their contribution is much smaller.

Lifespan and warranty are a separate topic, and it is easy to read more into them than the documents actually say. The manufacturer gives an extended warranty on the implant itself as a product, lifetime in a number of markets, provided it was placed according to protocol, original components were used and the patient attends check-ups; prosthetic components usually have a shorter warranty. This warranty covers the product, not the outcome of treatment: it does not cover peri-implantitis caused by poor hygiene or smoking, the doctor's work or the cost of a repeat procedure. To claim it you need an implant passport with the reference and batch numbers, so the stickers from the packaging should go into your medical record on the day of surgery; ask the clinic for the exact terms of the programme in writing.

The bottom line: the extra cost is justified when there is a specific clinical reason: a narrow ridge, where a narrower Roxolid implant makes it possible to avoid grafting; immediate protocols, where primary stability is needed; difficult healing conditions; the smile zone with a thin gum biotype; wanting access to original components ten to fifteen years from now. It is not justified in a straightforward case with enough bone and conventional timelines: there, the outcome will depend on bone volume and quality, the condition of the gums, hygiene, smoking and the precision of planning. No alloy or surface can make up for inflamed gums and missed check-ups.

How your visit works and how we support you

  • The first consultation with the implantologist takes 40–60 minutes: the doctor examines your mouth, assesses the bite and the gums, and refers you for a cone beam CT scan.
  • Surgery is scheduled for a separate day: one implant takes 40–60 minutes, several up to two hours including preparation.
  • After surgery you receive the surgical report, the implant passport with the reference and batch numbers, the stickers from the implant packaging, the follow-up X-ray and written aftercare instructions.
  • MediUkraine's partner clinic in Lviv is the Vidnova dental clinic at 10 Ivana-Teodoziia Kurovtsia Street, where we book patients for the consultation and the surgical stage.
  • MediUkraine handles booking and scheduling: we choose the clinic and plan the visits so that the consultation, the CT scan and the surgery fit into a single trip.
  • We stay in touch after you return home: the report, the scans and the implant passport stay with you, and if needed we arrange a video consultation with the doctor who treated you.

What happens after implant placement and when to judge the result

Swelling and moderate pain are normal for the first two or three days after surgery. The doctor prescribes painkillers, an antibiotic and antiseptic rinses where indicated, and advises a cold compress on the cheek for the first few hours and soft, lukewarm food. Avoid hot food, saunas, the gym and flights during these days.

Sutures are removed on day 7–10, and the doctor inspects the wound at the same visit. Until then, do not brush the area; use rinses instead and chew on the other side. Contact the clinic if you notice swelling that gets worse after the third day, throbbing pain, discharge from the wound, a temperature above 38 °C, or numbness that persists after the anaesthetic has worn off.

Osseointegration then begins, and this is where the surfaces differ. For SLA the manufacturer recommends around six weeks before loading and for SLActive three to four weeks, both for standard conditions. In practice doctors build in a margin: bone is softer in the upper jaw, the wait is extended by several months after bone grafting or a sinus lift, and with diabetes or smoking the timelines are set more cautiously. The actual period is set by the doctor who measured the insertion torque and saw the follow-up X-ray.

Integration is assessed clinically and on an X-ray, not by how it feels: an implant that has failed to integrate is often painless. The doctor checks for mobility and the condition of the gum around the cover screw, measures stability with an instrument if needed and takes a follow-up X-ray. Only then is the healing abutment fitted.

The restorative stage adds another two to four weeks: the healing abutment, an abutment for the matching platform, an impression or intraoral scan, and making the crown in the laboratory. You can chew normally once the permanent crown is fitted, and most patients get used to it within a few weeks. The gum contour around the crown takes several months to settle fully, which is noticeable in the smile zone.

Failures should be discussed openly: some implants do not integrate, and no surface rules that out. It happens mostly in the first months; causes include infection, overheating of the bone during drilling, loading too early, smoking and poorly controlled medical conditions. The implant is then removed, the site heals for two to three months and the implant is placed again. After treatment comes maintenance: a check-up and professional cleaning every six months and a follow-up X-ray once a year. Only a doctor who has seen your CT scan and the state of the tissues can predict the outcome in your case.

How treatment goes, step by step

Step 1. Consultation, CT scan and choice of system. The doctor examines your mouth, assesses the bite and the gums, and refers you for a cone beam CT scan. The scan shows whether there is enough bone, whether grafting is needed, and what length and diameter of implant can be placed. This is also when you discuss which line is appropriate (Tissue Level, Bone Level or BLX) and whether there is a clinical reason to pay extra for the SLActive surface. You receive a written plan with stages, timelines and a quote.

Step 2. Implant placement. The procedure is done under local anaesthesia, with sedation if needed. The doctor exposes the bone, prepares the site with the drill sequence specified for this system, and inserts the implant using a torque wrench to control the force. The torque value is recorded in the surgical report, because it determines whether immediate loading can be considered. The wound is stitched, and in some cases a healing abutment or a temporary crown kept out of the bite is fitted straight away. One implant takes 40–60 minutes.

In total, treating one tooth takes three to six months, or up to nine after bone grafting. Between implant placement and the permanent crown come osseointegration, the healing abutment, an abutment for the matching platform and making the crown in the laboratory: there are few active visits in that time, and most of it is healing. No hospital stay is needed: every stage is outpatient, and you return to normal life the same day after each visit.

How the treatment cycle is organised

Implant treatment is not a single procedure but a process spread over months, with long breaks between the active stages. If you are travelling from another city or from abroad, it splits conveniently into two trips, sometimes three if bone grafting is done as a separate stage.

The first trip is diagnostic and surgical: consultation, cone beam CT scan, extraction or augmentation if needed, implant placement and a follow-up X-ray. Altogether that takes two to four days, of which only a few hours are spent at the clinic; the rest is for initial healing and a check before you leave.

Then comes the osseointegration period, which you spend at home. Its length depends on more than the surface: the manufacturer's three to four weeks for SLActive and around six for SLA apply to standard conditions, and in the upper jaw or after a sinus lift or bone grafting the doctor adds several months. For planning trips, allow three to six months; the exact period is confirmed after the follow-up X-ray.

The second trip is restorative: healing abutment, an abutment for the matching platform, impression or scan, try-in and fitting of the permanent crown. It takes 5 to 10 days, depending on the dental laboratory's workload and the number of crowns; clinics with their own laboratory are quicker.

After that comes maintenance: check-ups and professional cleaning every six months and a follow-up X-ray once a year. The surgical report, the implant passport and the scans stay with you, so follow-up can also be done where you live. MediUkraine plans both trips and stays in touch in between, including about the timing of the second visit.

Risks, complications and contraindications

Implant placement is surgery, and some after-effects are normal in the first days: swelling, bruising on the cheek, moderate pain and sometimes slight bleeding. These pass within a few days. Contact the clinic if you notice swelling that gets worse after the third day, throbbing pain, pus, a temperature above 38 °C, or numbness that persists after the anaesthetic has worn off.

Surgical complications are uncommon but serious. In the lower jaw, the inferior alveolar nerve can be damaged, causing numbness of the lip, chin or gum, which may be temporary and occasionally permanent. In the upper jaw, the floor of the maxillary sinus can be perforated, which can lead to sinusitis. The root of a neighbouring tooth can also be damaged. The safeguard is the same in every case: planning from a cone beam CT scan and using a surgical guide rather than drilling by eye.

The main late complication is peri-implantitis, inflammation of the tissue around the implant with loss of bone; it is preceded by mucositis, inflammation of the soft tissue only, which is still reversible. The triggers are well known: poor hygiene, smoking, cement left under the gum with cemented crowns, a history of periodontitis and irregular check-ups. Neither the Roxolid alloy nor the SLActive surface protects against peri-implantitis: they affect integration, not the long-term health of the tissue around the implant.

Failed osseointegration is a separate issue: the implant does not fuse with the bone and becomes loose. This happens mainly in the first months after placement. The approach is standard: the implant is removed, the site is left to heal, bone material is added if needed and a new implant is placed after two to three months; a second attempt usually succeeds, but that cannot be promised in advance.

Some risks relate to the choice of system. Reactions to titanium are rare, but if intolerance is suspected, a zirconia implant can be considered instead. A non-original abutment fits less precisely and allows micromovement in the connection, which leads to screw loosening and bone loss around the neck; it also voids the manufacturer's warranty. Protecting yourself against grey imports and counterfeits is simple: the implant is taken out of its sealed packaging in front of you, and the sticker with the reference and batch numbers goes into your medical record on the day of surgery.

Contraindications are divided into permanent and temporary. The first group includes severe uncontrolled heart disease and clotting disorders, a history of radiotherapy to the maxillofacial area, and treatment with bisphosphonates or denosumab at high oncological doses because of the risk of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw. The second includes uncontrolled diabetes, active periodontitis with loose teeth, untreated infection at the site, pregnancy, and age before the jaws have finished growing. Smoking does not formally rule out the procedure, but it raises the risk of peri-implantitis and early implant loss, so the doctor discusses it separately. Only a doctor, after an examination and a review of the scan, can assess the risks in your case.

Frequently asked questions

How much do Straumann dental implants cost in Ukraine?

At the clinics MediUkraine works with, a Straumann implant costs from USD 733, the version with the SLActive surface from USD 856 and crown placement from USD 280. The surgical item covers the implant, the surgery and the anaesthesia, and sometimes the healing abutment. The CT scan, tooth extraction, bone material, sinus lift and surgical guide are charged separately. Ask for a full quote covering every stage up to the permanent crown. The clinic confirms the final cost after an examination and a review of the scan.

How does Straumann Active differ from a standard Straumann implant?

The implant body, thread and connection are the same: the only difference is the surface treatment. The Active version has the hydrophilic SLActive surface: the implant is stored in a sealed ampoule of saline and removed just before placement, so blood wets it better and the clot adheres more closely. On this basis the manufacturer shortens the recommended time to loading from around six weeks to three or four. The surcharge makes most sense when healing conditions are difficult; in a straightforward case most patients skip it.

What is Roxolid and who needs it?

Roxolid is an alloy of titanium and zirconium, roughly 85% titanium and 15% zirconium, stronger than commercially pure grade four titanium. This allows 2.9 and 3.3 mm diameter implants to be made without compromising mechanical reliability. It is useful where the bone ridge is narrow or the gap between neighbouring teeth is small, for example to replace lower incisors. It can sometimes avoid the need to widen the ridge with a bone graft, but if the ridge lacks height, bone grafting is unavoidable whatever the alloy.

Why is the BLX abutment charged separately, and can a cheaper one be used?

The abutment connects the implant to the crown. It is a separate component and is never included in the price of the surgical stage. The BLX line has its own TorcFit connection, so its components are not interchangeable with Bone Level ones, and the quote should state which platform the abutment is for. A non-original component can technically be fitted, but the fit will be less precise, a microgap and micromovement will appear, and the manufacturer's warranty will no longer apply.

Does a Straumann implant really last longer than cheaper systems?

There is no clear-cut answer. The system has a large body of published long-term data showing high survival rates, but other well-studied systems show similar figures. Lifespan depends not on the brand but on bone volume and quality, the condition of the gums, hygiene, smoking, the bite and how regularly you attend check-ups. The crown wears faster than the implant itself and may need replacing over time. Only a doctor can predict the outcome in your case, after an examination.

What does the manufacturer's implant warranty cover?

It covers the product itself: if the implant has a manufacturing defect or has fractured, the manufacturer replaces it under the terms of its programme. The usual conditions apply: placement according to protocol, original prosthetic components and regular check-ups; in a number of markets the implant warranty is lifetime, while prosthetic components have a shorter period. It does not cover peri-implantitis caused by poor hygiene or smoking, the doctor's work or the cost of a repeat procedure. Ask the clinic for the exact terms in writing, and keep the implant passport with the reference and batch numbers.

Who is Straumann worth the extra cost for, and who not?

It is justified when there is a specific clinical reason: a narrow ridge, where a narrower Roxolid implant makes it possible to avoid bone grafting; immediate placement or immediate loading, where primary stability is needed; difficult healing conditions; the smile zone with a thin gum biotype; wanting access to original components many years from now. It is not justified in a straightforward case: enough bone, conventional timelines, a back tooth. There, the same money is better spent on any bone grafting you need, a custom abutment or periodontitis treatment.
